Belgian Grand Prix 2020: Practice 3 team radio

49 radio messages were recorded during practice 3 at the Belgian Grand Prix 2020, across 13 drivers. 47 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Kevin MAGNUSSEN had the most, with 7.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay Kevin, two burnouts and then mode race start, practice start.

  2. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

    Engineer: K2 plus, K2 plus.

  3. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: K2 is not charging, check

Romain GROSJEAN: that K2 is charging, battery is very low for what it is

  4. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And ready to check approaching 10-8.

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, 10-8, we're good.

Engineer: Yep, that's loud and clear for me. You were plus 4, initial throttle a little bit late, and the blip was good.

  5. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Daniil KVYAT: Yeah, I'm still just pulling a bit more to the right than usual, so, and also the the pulling on the bike, on the brakes, just to double-check, please.

    Engineer: We'll have a look.

  6. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, that was a good first lap. It was 0.3 quicker than Raman, mostly middle sector. I think the rear temps were too low at the start of the lap, so just try and keep this rear tire temp. And obviously we can sort out the touching after this run. It looks too much to us as well.

  7. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Ok, so the rear tyres looked a bit cool at the start of that lap because it's difficult to build temp in these conditions. Let's see how it is on the second attempt.

  8. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: You and Kev are the only two cars on track, so free from traffic.

  9. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, remember charge off mode push

  10. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: OK, K2 or charge on, good job, good improvement there, 18-19, anything we can help you with or you want to try?

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: I just forgot the F1 on the second level, the guy's a little bit oversteer on entry, not really on brake so it's late entry, early mid OK,

Engineer: we'll just see if anything interesting is happening there, we can do a switch change

    Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Turn 9 is

Engineer: a good example OK, understood, we'll look at it

  11. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Anywhere we can help you with.

Romain GROSJEAN: General rear grip is quite low for some reason. Just doesn't work well. Turn 1 and 19 are really good examples. It's just no traction.

  12. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Okay, remember we use the in button the in button and box from our box come and just follow the guys instructions They'll pull you around the front right around the box in front of our carriage

  13. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

    Engineer: light rain

  14. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Ok so now he's just on your tail, nobody else on track, do what you need to do for your tyre temperatures, don't worry about him.

  15. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Let's have recharge off to get temperature in the pack. It's cool Carlos, so you need good pace on this outlap to get temperature in the tyres.

  16. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: OK, recharge on. Recharge on. And we'll do a cool-down lap, ready for another go. You're in phase with everybody around you. How was the balance, Alex? How was the balance?

Alexander ALBON: Quite neutral, honestly, on entries mainly. Otherwise, traction is pretty good.

  17. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: At the moment you are P8, Sebastian P3, Sebastian lap time 45.8 and we are losing 1 tenth sector 1 and 1 tenth sector 3, same sector 2.

  18. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  19. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: so compared to Lando it looks decent up to the exit of turn 11 and then you brake quite early into 12 and also into 14

  20. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Yeah, we can see an issue, so mode charge, mode charge.

  21. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: So be valve 3 and recharge off when you are ready Max

  22. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Consider 3rd gear in the 2nd part of the chicane as discussed yesterday, and avoid the short shift exit turn 1, we had another issue with the engine there. Your lap time 45.0, and Danny managed to improve with the change of switches.

  23. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

    Engineer: It's

Alexander ALBON: like a switch, it's like either we have front locking or rear locking

    Engineer: Yeah, understood

  24. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

    Engineer: Okay, so, go on.

Alexander ALBON: It just felt like the rears weren't that ready out of

    Engineer: the

Alexander ALBON: last corner into turn 1.

Engineer: Yeah, understood, we saw that. Your rear tyres are now warmer. Fronts are in a decent window but your rears are a little bit warmer, so we'll see what happens this time.

  25. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Daniil KVYAT: And the brakes are poor. I cannot attack the brakes at all. They're just poor.

  26. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

    Engineer: Uh, I

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: messed up turn one.

Engineer: Okay understood, just charge on, charge on. Okay so we'll just keep the tire temp, get the charge up.

  27. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: Strat 11 and keep pushing, Strat 11 and keep pushing, Strat 11 and go 1, go 1. So use DRS and then disable it, use DRS then disable it when you go straight.

  28. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Alex, we're going to come through and do some starts, do you want to take some front wing off to feel it on the outlaps, question?

Alexander ALBON: Yep, OK, two clicks, no three clicks.

Engineer: OK, understood. Now box, Alex box, box this lap. So we're going to do a front wing adjust in the pit box, so stop in the pit box please and then we're going to drive out and do a start.

  29. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: There's something stuck or something loose in the pedals.

  30. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, the whole second sector is just like light.

    Engineer: Understood, thank you.

  31. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And we may have some rain at turn 5, 14, 15.

  32. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Okay, there's quite a few drops around five and six, but it doesn't look very cloudy around so Maybe it's better in a couple of minutes Understood

  33. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Charge on, inbox. Charge on, inbox.

  34. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Ok Kimi, you have nobody behind, if you feel there is too much rain, box, let me know.

  35. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Okay ma'am, we're gonna have to go otherwise we won't get both the laps in.

  36. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Kimi RAIKKONEN: The left front doesn't work, and right rear

Engineer: Yeah, the right rear died as well

  37. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Okay, so there's a few cars around turn 10 at the moment, there's about six or seven cars, they will all start to back up, so I'll suggest try and do any work you need to do on the tyres now, it might get a bit slow at the end of the lap, alright?

  38. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: We have a little bit more gusty wind at the minute, bit more gusty wind

  39. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Is there a lot of queuing in the last corner?

Engineer: Now there is, but we will be clearing by... We arrived there, six cars at the last chicane. Grosjean 11 behind, on a time-lapse.

  40. Romain GROSJEANHaas

    Romain GROSJEAN: What a shamble!

Engineer: The queuing is crazy, the crazy is doing... Just watch for Perez... FI needs to do something, FI needs to do something... Perez is completely on the racing line Okay watch for him coming through now on a push But yeah we agree we're reporting it

  41. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Ah, went right!

  42. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  43. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: So Carlos Lando is three tenths quicker. He's had a bit more tow. You were still seven seconds from the car in front

  44. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Massive traffic jam.

  45. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: Oh my god, what a joke!

  46. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: An opportunity to carry more speed through turn 7, and possibly a little bit less speed in turn 6 will help.

  47. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: The traffic is a nightmare, now I don't have traffic now, but to start the lap it's impossible. Yeah, we've seen that.

  48. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I'm aborting mate, it's just, well, no prep, all this is slow, start the lap and then the tyres are really f***ed,

Engineer: so. Right, so you've got Danny behind you, three seconds. Danny behind, three seconds time lap. So, box this lap.

  49. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Can I start the next one at least? No time. Of

    Sebastian VETTEL: course, there is...

Engineer: I can check the flag. To start? Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. Yeah, exactly. Okay, copy.
