Hungarian Grand Prix 2019: Practice 1 team radio
57 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix 2019, across 17 drivers. 56 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Lewis HAMILTON had the most, with 9.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Engineer: So Carlos, there's still light rain in the pit lane. We don't want to take any risk on the medium tyre. Do you think it's okay to open a lap or is it getting a bit damp? Turn one may be the wettest part.
Carlos SAINZ: I'll judge it.
Engineer: So remember no risk, no risk on the medium.
Carlos SAINZ: Copy.
Engineer: So that initial shower was just the beginning of it, we expect some heavier rain in about another four minutes.
Engineer: So box, box, box, box, box, we've seen some misfire, come back into the garage and investigate the issue. I
Valtteri BOTTAS: had to go on the other side of the bollard.
Lewis HAMILTON: I'm still having this problem with the brakes, they're not braked
Engineer: OK copy Go
Lewis HAMILTON: ahead and fix this, brake temperature issue
Engineer: So the brakes were balanced on the slow lap, it's only when you went for that big stop that they took a split
Lewis HAMILTON: They're constantly not in balance
Engineer: Yeah copy, we've seen the offset now
Engineer: So use overtake but no DRS? Affirm
Engineer: And Lewis if you're going to do a double cool down and you want to flap adjust then you can pass through the pit lane. Lookalow behind 2 seconds on a slow lap. No
Lewis HAMILTON: double.
Engineer: OK copy.
Engineer: I've
Nico HULKENBERG: got a bit of a strange feeling in the car, it feels very light on aero balance but at the same time the rear Yeah, it's very loose as if the diff wasn't locking up properly or something
Engineer: Copy that Nico, we'll have a look see if there's anything obvious
Charles LECLERC: Yeah, Talsagon!
Carlos SAINZ: Starting to rain a bit, turn 5
Engineer: Copy
Nico HULKENBERG: You know, it's very, very odd, or like an aero feeling, but the rear is always floating. Very bad feeling.
Engineer: Copy that, Nico. I'd suggest that we box to make a change.
Lewis HAMILTON: I got the yellow, which looked like it was a red, I turned four, so that's why I backed off.
Engineer: OK, no problem.
Lewis HAMILTON: Sorry?
Engineer: It was a slippery surface, flag.
Engineer: We don't expect big rain, only few drops there and there.
Alexander ALBON: Car is all over the place
Max VERSTAPPEN: It's drizzling now a little bit here, turn 5.
Carlos SAINZ: The heaviest rain is in turn 5 and 6, for your info
Engineer: Copy
Engineer: We staying out or? If you're not learning anything Lewis then we can come back in.
Lewis HAMILTON: It looks like more rain is going to come so staying out you are getting something.
Alexander ALBON: It's like we have something wrong with the car.
Engineer: Organo books for Fluffergist. Watch your mirrors for Ricardo, 4 behind. Watch your mirrors for Ricardo 4 behind.
Engineer: And try and challenge turn 1 braking pressure a bit more, but be careful of the bump, peak brake pressure into turn 12.
Alexander ALBON: Yeah, I don't know what's going on, but it's all over the place.
Engineer: I
Lewis HAMILTON: mean, rain's gonna come. I can stay out if you want me to. If
Engineer: you're still learning something Lewis then do. You've got Hülkenberg two and a half behind. He is on a slow lap. Good gap behind him though. Perez next car coming through at 15 seconds.
Lewis HAMILTON: Yeah, always learning. It's just keeping the tyre temperatures down.
Engineer: Carlos we expect four to five minutes and then possibly heavier rain four to five minutes then possibly heavier rain
Max VERSTAPPEN: I don't know, it's just very sensitive on the rear, losing a lot of grip, last sector.
Engineer: Yep, tailwind into 14.
Engineer: Heavier rain in pit lane now and turn one and two showing wet on the Marshall post
Kimi RAIKKONEN: It's red since number one.
Engineer: So let's box this lap then, box this lap, we will do the start.
Kimi RAIKKONEN: No, no, I'm not going out, it's just red for now.
Engineer: it's
Lance STROLL: fully raining.
Engineer: Copy that. Easy on the way in, easy on the way in.
Romain GROSJEAN: Is it going away or staying on that rain?
Engineer: Tricky to say, tricky to say.
Engineer: Lance so the rain has now eased off a fraction from what you got you pretty much got the heaviest part we do want to because the tracks now been declared wet we do want to roll round a single out and back in on an intermediate tire so that we can give that
Engineer: and box now box, track is clear behind
Engineer: Okay Nico, the map is showing some drops all around the circuit.
Engineer: Very gentle lap on these intermediates please.
Nico HULKENBERG: There's no rain when tracks dry, so basically it's good for slicks again.
Engineer: Yep, copy that Nico. And it looks like we don't have any more rain heading our way for the near future.
Kevin MAGNUSSEN: I mean, the tarmac is very dark, so it's hard to see if it's wet, but I think it's dry.
Engineer: Okay, understood, Kevin. Thank you. So we'll just finish this install on this tire and then come back in, and we'll have the new tire ready to run when we need.
Lewis HAMILTON: We're going to use these tires again.
Engineer: Affirm, sir. Look after them.
Engineer: So just keep the brakes cool and then we'll get into the change.
Lewis HAMILTON: I don't want to lose time with these brakes, for this change. Trek's at a good time now.
Carlos SAINZ: How is the wind?
Engineer: Looks similar to the start of the session winds died down again and gone back to being a crosswind on the start finish
George RUSSELL: Hello DRS Yeah, but wherever you are FI8 it's definitely DRS
Engineer: Copy, understood
Engineer: Magnussen, four seconds.
Nico HULKENBERG: You see the rear tyre temps? They're incredibly low after a hot lap.
Engineer: Yeah, I'd suggest only one cool-down lap. Let's see what we get on the next lap.
Engineer: I think the track is now almost fully dry, so wait a little bit, but then it'll be good for sticks. Understood, we'll be ready to go.
Romain GROSJEAN: Ok brother, there's an issue. I
Engineer: found it, but there's an issue. Ok, we're looking, we're looking.
Romain GROSJEAN: I've got everything. I'm like on Monza wings. So there's something that went wrong. Ok,
Engineer: we're looking.
Engineer: Feedback on the test item?
Alexander ALBON: Same problem for me, not really different. It felt sharp on the initial first two corners.
Engineer: The
Alexander ALBON: front was behaving quite well. And then by turn 4 the front was gone again.
Charles LECLERC: But yeah, the car is in full grey.
Engineer: Copy and understood.
Sebastian VETTEL: I had a bit of traffic in the last sector, but not just a bit, quite heavy.
Charles LECLERC: They are staying in the middle, completely.
Engineer: Understood.
Engineer: OK, we'll box this lap Max please, box this lap. Doesn't do much, it's not front wing related. Yeah, we've also picked up some front wing damage from the first time lap at turn 4, so box this lap.
Engineer: How is the traction, Alex? Do you think we have margin to be a bit more aggressive for rotation?
Alexander ALBON: No, we are... we're definitely not... we're not comfortable anywhere, to be honest. It just feels like we're sliding on the surface, something's wrong with the way we're doing the tyres.
Engineer: It
Alexander ALBON: feels like at low speed we have an OK car, to be honest. Then at the medium speed we have this washout, but it's from the moment we turn in, there's no bite at all from the front tyres. And then actually high speed is obviously if you really look at it. I think a lot of the issue is we have so much steering angle, mid-corner, we get these weird kind of stalls of air. It feels like when we turn in with a lot of steering angle, we lose so much downforce and the rear is just snapping a lot.
Kimi RAIKKONEN: Yeah, I had a big snap in turn 3, but then I lost track of modern attack.
Engineer: Copy that.
Engineer: Ok Nico, for reference, your pace is very much the same as Danny's. Haas has started a bit quicker but are now going more slowly.
Engineer: Stop stop stop stop stop stop, okay, you can go you can go it's okay
Engineer: Just three seconds to Verstappen on a slow lap, toggle magic.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Next one. My right mirror again keeps moving.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Ah f***,
Engineer: it
Max VERSTAPPEN: just stays in front of me, the whole sector.
Daniil KVYAT: Okay, I locked the outside front wheel.
Engineer: Yeah, close the lapper please. Ah,
Daniil KVYAT: no, I didn't push anymore.
Engineer: It's fine, it's fine, close the lapper please, push now.
Engineer: All OK Max? Yeah, unbelievable man this session.
Max VERSTAPPEN: It's so sensitive, unbelievable, just keep sliding on entry.
Engineer: OK, Nico, seeing a similar pace drop off from other cars now.
Daniil KVYAT: Searing wheel wasn't straight on this last main straight.
Engineer: Copy, we're checking.
Nico HULKENBERG: The steering is down on the left hand side again now, probably also 2 degrees.
Engineer: Copy that Nico, it might be tyre wear related. No
Nico HULKENBERG: it was also, it kind of shifted there during the session.
