Bahrain Grand Prix 2020: Practice 2 team radio

59 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the Bahrain Grand Prix 2020, across 16 drivers. 57 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Alexander ALBON had the most, with 8.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  2. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Valtteri BOTTAS: The steering is still a bit right hand down.

Engineer: Copy that, we can have a look.

  3. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: everybody's on prototypes apart from Giovinazzi is on a hard but everybody around you is on protos same as you

  4. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Can the dash brightness go down a little bit?

Engineer: Display 8, position 12 for the dash.

  5. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  6. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Do you want consistent running right? Consistent running yes please

    Romain GROSJEAN: F***ing Mercedes f***ing

Engineer: Press oil pump button, press oil pump button

  7. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, headwind has died down in turn 4. Wind is a bit calmer now and wind direction is pretty much parallel to the start of the straight. Yeah, I can feel that.

Carlos SAINZ: You're also into turn 11, there's less headwind and I miss the apex.

  8. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: Why doesn't let me pass this what the hell what the hell is he doing? Yeah, what the

  9. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Engineer: Ha! You

Max VERSTAPPEN: should have seen that!

  10. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: We do a double cooldown, double cooldown. You have a push toggle for turn 6 and 13 for the understeer. Push toggle.

Daniil KVYAT: Yeah, but I will not be able to go back on time before turn 8.

Engineer: Copy, can you do it turn 13?

Daniil KVYAT: Turn 13, I use the push toggle already now. Copy, sorry, copy.

  11. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: These tyres had massive understeer so I would come up a little bit, but I don't think these tyres are any relevant.

  12. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: The low speed feels pretty neutral.

Engineer: Okay, Reichen approaching now. Watch your mirrors, Reichen, and now.

  13. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: How's the low speed balance changed during the run? Question?

Alexander ALBON: No, but the medium speed, I'm getting so much understeer now. Yeah,

Engineer: okay, understood. Max also has the same feedback on these tyres. So understeer has grown compared to normal.

  14. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: He's out in front of me, he's drifting very nicely!

    Engineer: Yeah, Hamilton.

  15. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: Don't

Lewis HAMILTON: don't grip on here.

  16. Lando NORRISMcLaren

    Engineer: Urgent. Default 0-3-0-3.

    Lando NORRIS: Confirm.

  17. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: and opportunity focus exit of turn 10 pushing the entry less will help

  18. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: Brakes felt average, traction improved, still a little bit neutral mid to exit Copy, it is within 2 now

  19. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: So the wind is a lot less than it was this morning. You've only got maybe a 5K tailwind into turn 1 this morning. It's 20. So there's a bit of a difference there compared to this morning.

  20. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: What do you think about the tyres so far?

Alexander ALBON: They just lose so much front grip on the second push.

  21. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Not not happening

  22. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: What lap time are the others doing on this medium?

Engineer: Best lap time on this medium is Perez 29.5 Don't think we quite got the scenario we expected, scenario switch is good

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah 29.5 is quicker, I don't think we can get there on this compound

  23. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, you didn't tell me about the Williams here

  24. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: On Dany's 1 tenth behind, only place we lost compared to Dany was a little bit entry turn 8, on the first push lap. I think we pushed the entry of turn 4 a bit too much on this last lap, same in turn 9-10.

  25. Esteban OCONRenault

Engineer: OK, Span, no threats behind at the moment. Just on turn one locking, our only suggestion is to try to get more of the braking done earlier, so hitting a higher peak pressure initially, slowing the car down a little bit more at the start so you can come off the brakes earlier.

    Esteban OCON: Copy, yep.

  26. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: Are you still understeer limited?

Daniil KVYAT: Well now also a bit of rear came and also the traction becomes weaker now after the first push up so it's a bit of everything now but I have more snaps and in those corners there turn 11 I had a bit more wash out than before. Like I don't think this tyre is going to get a lot better so.

Engineer: Do you think we are going to learn more in the next push?

Daniil KVYAT: Not a lot to be honest not a lot but we can try.

Engineer: Let's try and if it's a waste of time we box.

Daniil KVYAT: Yeah exactly let's decide after the third turn.

    Engineer: Copy.

  27. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Just a reminder to make sure the brakes are ready.

    Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, understood.

  28. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Kimi RAIKKONEN: Okay, you have to tell Elliot about the traffic I was in, turn 1.

    Engineer: Okay.

  29. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Getting quite heavy vibrations at the end of straights.

    Engineer: Okay, understood.

  30. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: And how was the balance?

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, it was more consistent than the morning and less aggressive

Engineer: Ok, so watch out for Norris, 4 seconds behind, 3 seconds now Yep,

Daniel RICCIARDO: that's cool The marker was for turn 6 It was a bit of understeer with ride, turn 6

    Engineer: Yep, copy that

  31. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

    Engineer: The

Sebastian VETTEL: grip was a bit worse second lap, not too bad, but I played around a little bit and messed up some corners.

  32. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Vibrations are still there, I am.

Sebastian VETTEL: They are getting a bit worse, to be honest. We are the new lockups. I think we should be seeing them.

Engineer: We are preparing to rebalance also this one, for the high fuel.

  33. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: So yeah, temperatures still up high, so we'll go for a second cool down lap, I suggest we box this lap, drive through the pit lane please, box this lap.

  34. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Engineer: OK, we'll do a double slowmix. It's a

Max VERSTAPPEN: red line of power, before the line.

    Engineer: Understood, copy.

  35. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: And I don't understand. I don't get it. There was no reason to stay in front of you

Pierre GASLY: Yeah, we lost two

Engineer: tents. I'm really sorry. There was no reason to stay there

  36. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Ok Alex, are you ok?

    Alexander ALBON: I'm fine

    Engineer: Ok mate

  37. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

    Alexander ALBON: Oh, sorry guys.

  38. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, I just saw I don't know if it was a dog or a cat maybe it's for that

  39. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: I don't see it. Or

Sebastian VETTEL: should we say... Who let the dogs out?

  40. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

    Engineer: If

Sebastian VETTEL: I had known that dogs were allowed, I would have brought mine, but he's in quarantine, so it wouldn't work out.

  41. George RUSSELLWilliams

Engineer: Yep, we're still good to do the single lap.

    George RUSSELL: Good.

    Engineer: I

George RUSSELL: guess it depends how good their dog-catching skills are.

  42. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: There was a dog on track. It's not a joke, it's a reality.

  43. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So it looks like we've got a loose dog on track.

    Lewis HAMILTON: Open stop Roscoe.

    Engineer: No, it's not him.

  44. Romain GROSJEANHaas

    Engineer: Okay, I'm drivable.

  45. George RUSSELLWilliams

Engineer: Oh my word. Yeah, okay.

  46. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Jesus Christ, what is this horse doing? Unbelievable.

  47. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: OK, Max, we will box this lap. Keep up the pace, please. Keep pushing on the wind and box this lap.

  48. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Can I have a front wing update?

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, that's all good. Tyre is just dying.

  49. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Daniil KVYAT: Just losing overall grip, a bit of everything, entering stability, understeer, poor traction.

Engineer: Ok Dani, everybody is struggling the same way, similar lap times to competitors.

  50. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: That's a P1, three and a half tenths to Verstappen P2. We have 13 minutes remaining, I suggest we get at least a check on the long run balance, let me know what you think.

  51. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Update on tires again when you can They are dead

  52. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Daniil KVYAT: I have so much over 0, I'm barely turning in the corners anymore, so

Engineer: what do you wanna do? Entry 8, entry 8

  53. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

Nicholas LATIFI: The rears are already gone, it's crazy!

  54. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So matching the step in initial lapse

  55. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, Kevin just some general feedback if you focus on the exits and push the entries less just give that a try We'll have two more timed two more timed

  56. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: It's just the front's

    Engineer: are

    George RUSSELL: too cold.

    Engineer: Copy, one lap remaining.

  57. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: What was the people doing on the C3?

Engineer: This is quite variable, so we'll have a look after, but Racing Point were able to do low 36s for 10 laps, let's say, and then they look like they have a bit more deg after that.

  58. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: All right, they stopped me at the bridge when I was almost past like okay,

    Engineer: okay, that's stupid.

    Pierre GASLY: But anyway

  59. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: All right, they stopped me at the bridge when I was almost past like okay. Okay, that's stupid. But anyway
