Austrian Grand Prix 2021: Practice 1 team radio
51 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Austrian Grand Prix 2021, across 18 drivers. Max VERSTAPPEN had the most, with 8.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Every message, in the order it happened
Engineer: Okay right and using DRS again so you'll have to sync the gears manually
Engineer: More push, more push.
Engineer: And then it will be recharged.
Charles LECLERC: I got quite a big flat spot.
Engineer: Ok, Kimi, mode charge on the line, and again, single charge should be enough.
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, I don't know why the tires feel very different to last week and in turn 1. They feel very cold. I will push again.
Engineer: Understood.
Engineer: So second gear again, and tyre 5, tyre 5, b-bar 6, b-bar 6.
Engineer: And we've had a couple of lights deleted for track limits turn 10.
Engineer: And tyre 5 please. Tyre 5.
Engineer: So Daniel, that was another good step, that lap. I think turn four we didn't quite get what we wanted. Still need to maximise more phase one and release, whereas that lap you were more like peak and then a bit more the triangular brake shape.
Engineer: How was the balance on that first time lap on this tyre?
Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, not too bad. I think I felt quite okay.
Engineer: So for the next push, focus turn 6, 7 and 9.
Callum ILOTT: What do you want me to focus on in 5, 6, 7, 9? The exits, or...? So
Engineer: try to carry a bit more speeds out. OK, copy.
Kimi RAIKKONEN: That's the way
Engineer: it
Kimi RAIKKONEN: is.
Engineer: Ace Valtteri at 9.8 last lap
Roy NISSANY: and exit
Engineer: free if you can it's feeling free so feeling free that's 246th gear and again DRS off for two seconds then DRS on
Yuki TSUNODA: Fast peak corner was way better, was much better
Engineer: Copy that
Yuki TSUNODA: Shall we try to add one more step of the entry stability in fast peak corner?
Engineer: Copy, straight 7, straight 7
Engineer: I'll come behind. I'm not sure what he was up to to be honest.
Engineer: So on that last lap we need to brake later turn three and definitely turn four Possibly even a bit turn one. I guess the time maybe didn't quite feel ready. Hopefully on another attempt. It'll be okay
Pierre GASLY: How is the wind? I keep losing the car in turn 9.
Engineer: Ok, we check. Wind is very, very low. It's not the wind.
Engineer: If you would like a flap adjust we could come through the pits and do one? Yeah we could come up a little bit, half a degree.
Nicholas LATIFI: I just felt something at the back of my heel, like a stone or something maybe when I braked.
Charles LECLERC: I'm struggling like crazy in the first corner.
Engineer: Ok, how was the balance of that lap?
ZHOU Guanyu: It was ok, a bit of understeer.
Engineer: Ok, understood.
Lewis HAMILTON: I've changed my wheel and the groove at the back is too deep Copy
Engineer: Okay, so time to gain is mid-corner turn one and mid-corner turn six and then a bit on entry of Correction mid-corner turn nine and entry of turn six
Lance STROLL: And I have no grip picking up the power, and these tires are done.
Engineer: Cars ahead on slow laps, so eyes on dash.
Mick SCHUMACHER: I would check also the first lap, turn 9, turn 10, if the T-Trade took some hits there or not.
Engineer: Copy that.
Pierre GASLY: Ok, can you give us more feedback? What do you need here? Just
Engineer: f***ing f***ing
Pierre GASLY: like the rear grip, I have
Engineer: a
Pierre GASLY: crazy wheel spin. Ok,
Engineer: contact pushing,
Pierre GASLY: approaching turn 9, boat is coming now, coming now. Charge off. I charge off what? I'm in the grass. Ok, let's keep the head down please. What do you need to go, what's the issue with this turn 1? The issue, I don't have one single clean out, like warm up and then after I have f***ing rear, turn 3. So I don't
Engineer: know,
Pierre GASLY: I have wheel spin likely. Okan pushing, coming behind our lot now. Okan pushing, coming behind our lot.
Lewis HAMILTON: Ah, I got down traffic.
Nikita MAZEPIN: Man, that was close.
Pierre GASLY: I get traffic everywhere, nobody gives a f**k,
Engineer: so... That's not really gonna change now.
Engineer: Daniel, we currently have an issue with the fuel rig, happy to do one more timed lap if you want to try, happy to try one more lap if you want.
Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, and I can always abort.
Engineer: Copy, happy with that.
Engineer: and we'll need a good warm-up on the brakes
Yuki TSUNODA: Yeah f***ing idiot this guy
Engineer: Yep, copy. Box, box, box, box. You push pit entry as a race lap. There will be a single cool stop, single cool stop onto the dead tires and flap adjust one turn down.
Engineer: Yeah, clearly it's the first time lap for this compound, and we missed it with the traffic on the outlap.
Pierre GASLY: Yeah, I just need much more rear grip.
Engineer: Okay, the other car managed to make it work pretty well, so we'll have a look.
Pierre GASLY: Me too, I can't make it work, you know, if we don't have any traffic, so... Just give me more rear grip, and then I make it work. Simple as that.
Engineer: Could be up to 15 time-lapse for the checkered flag, Mox, 15.
Engineer: Gasly ahead could be on fuel so you need a big gap
Engineer: Doing a good job with the rear left back but it is still continuing to creep up so just watch that grip hasn't stabilised.
Engineer: And we've got Gasly 3 seconds Not
Lewis HAMILTON: stopping the car enough, turn 3
Engineer: And just watch your pedal crossover turn six and turn seven.
Lewis HAMILTON: Tires are over near ready.
Carlos SAINZ: Graining, front left.
Engineer: Copy, graining, and, uh, rest up in 10.2.
Carlos SAINZ: Also, I can see rear graining.
Engineer: Rested.
Sergio PEREZ: With the base on this side
Engineer: Yeah, so Stroll is high fueling at 10.6 Leclerc is around a 1.10 So our target high 1.9
Carlos SAINZ: Car is really un-driveable.
Engineer: Is that another driver on DRS ahead of it? Yeah!
Max VERSTAPPEN: Is there a gap somewhere?
Engineer: Not really. Maintain position. Need two more laps I think, Max.
Engineer: Ok, more charge. So we will have to do another lap, get the flag and then go on the grid.
Kimi RAIKKONEN: It's set for ***, compared to the previous
Engineer: one.
Kimi RAIKKONEN: Or then something has happened to the car. Copy.
Engineer: So before any burnouts max before any burnouts, could you sink first gear please sink gear one and Then it's two burnouts, please two burnouts
Max VERSTAPPEN: Stratum is okay
Engineer: Strap suit is fine And it's a gear one launch from the left-hand side left-hand side
ZHOU Guanyu: Thank you so much everyone for this experience, I absolutely loved it.
Engineer: No worries mate, good progression.
Engineer: We're going to try and do a double shuffle on both cars, so slow in-lap please, slow in-lap.
