Monaco Grand Prix 2021: Practice 2 team radio

48 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the Monaco Grand Prix 2021, across 17 drivers. 46 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Pierre GASLY had the most, with 6.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Drive straight out, track should be green.

  2. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

Nicholas LATIFI: Can we just check aero-wise? We're all happy. It feels a bit strange in the rear.

  3. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Lance STROLL: I have no grip.

Engineer: Sainz four behind Raikkonen six.

Lance STROLL: I have no grip with super high levels of unders here.

  4. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So you've got currently P2, it's exactly the same time as Verstappen P1, your purple sector is 2 and 3.

  5. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: I don't like the balance to N34, it's like quite a lot of force out now.

Engineer: N35 will help in those corners, we have a look on the next lap.

  6. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Engineer: Does the car feel okay to you? Yeah, the car feels all right. Maybe the steering a bit to the right. Okay, understood. We can fix that later.

  7. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I'm struggling a lot with understeer, like the front tires are not keeping up.

  8. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Valtteri BOTTAS: I'm struggling with the rear internet now, so I don't know, do you suggest magic?

Engineer: Yeah, you can try that.

  9. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Okay, still struggling with similar things, they're kind of medium and higher speed, turn 3 is like slightly better but still need a bit more really, and then this rear locking later in turn 5, like I want to push the entry but I can't.

  10. Yuki TSUNODAAlphaTauri

Yuki TSUNODA: Uh, hit the rear.

Engineer: Box, box, you're up in box.

  11. Daniel RICCIARDOMcLaren

Engineer: And Daniel, that rear limitation, more in low speed?

Daniel RICCIARDO: It was more as the tyre just got old that last lap. Three and four was quite on the edge. So probably more to do with tyre.

    Engineer: OK, understood.

  12. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: The rear left has got quite a bad grailing.

    Engineer: Understood.

  13. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Carlos SAINZ: You sure we can do burnouts, yeah? Oh, sorry, I was... Sorry, I... I missed it. No problem. I was going to the end of the pit lane and then I remember. Watch for Russell behind, coming fast. That was a pretty useless lap, sorry. I think there was a good description on that lap, yeah.

  14. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  15. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Carlos SAINZ: You sure we can do burnouts, yeah?

  16. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  17. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

    Engineer: Go go

  18. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

Engineer: Ok Nikita, let's go, cool, target still plus 15, plus 15, maintaining bird dropping surface feedback on tires please and Leclerc is about to open the lap, he's boxing so no third behind, no third behind. Copy, yeah

Nicholas LATIFI: just losing the rears towards the end, it's definitely a push-cool push right now, maybe take a bit of a slow recool this lap.

Engineer: I think you need to keep the bulk, keep the speed in high speed but just drop a lot in the last sector for the surface.

  19. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: You just have to steer.

  20. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

    Nicholas LATIFI: Tires are gone

  21. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

Nicholas LATIFI: Oh, I had a very weird pushing moment there in the hairpin.

  22. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: There is something happening turn 5 that didn't happen this morning. I don't know the front axle is bouncing, I'm touching something it's

Engineer: It's different than this morning. Okay, we can check

  23. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Carlos SAINZ: Just for the future, I'm knocking the brake balance buttons going out of the pits. So just always double check that I'm

    Engineer: in

Carlos SAINZ: the right place because I don't want that to happen in quali.

    Engineer: Copy that.

  24. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: Summit rear slip in that middle sector turn 5, sorry turn 6 onwards. Thoughts

    Engineer: on

    George RUSSELL: reducing EB?

Engineer: OK, so just torque 1, might be a small change.

  25. Sebastian VETTELAston Martin

    Engineer: You've

Sebastian VETTEL: got something in the eye. Sorry, I slowed down.

Engineer: OK, that should be cool.

  26. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Compare to Antonio, turn 12 entry and turn 13 entry, we lose couple of turns there.

Kimi RAIKKONEN: Concentrate on the radio now.

Engineer: Russell 3 seconds behind, pushing.

  27. Daniel RICCIARDOMcLaren

Daniel RICCIARDO: I don't know what the f**k the Ferrari's doing.

Engineer: That's Leclerc. You still have a 12-second gap behind to Stroll.

  28. Sebastian VETTELAston Martin

Sebastian VETTEL: My eyes. Feels like my eye is bleeding, man. If you want to

    Engineer: box

Sebastian VETTEL: now then... It's alright, I carry on. Either I'm just super emotional or there's something stuck in my eye.

  29. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: Who is this f***ing

    Engineer: b***h?

Pierre GASLY: Can't let me pass! Ah! Right now, charge on! Quickly! You're in Monaco, you need to f***ing open the eyes, b***h!

  30. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I have a feeling, I'm trying to cool the rears, but I'm feeling f***ed about my lap, because I don't have front grip.

  31. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Lance STROLL: Yeah, I think my hand clipped the neutral button

Engineer: that's correct Lance that's correct

  32. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: To exit 3, entry 4, lots of oversteer, only at the end of the run.

  33. Daniel RICCIARDOMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Daniel that is P17. We've got time for one more attempt. I think to find time then looking at what Lando's doing he's carrying the brake much less in the low speed corners so coming out of the brake more to stabilize the entry and that's enabling him to roll a bit more speed through the low speed. In the high speed corners he's much closer but Lando tends to carry a very light brake pressure to the apex which gives a little more rotation.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Okay understood yeah I'll try again.

Engineer: Are we good with cars behind? Yeah cars behind are in phase.

  34. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Just check the steering and everything, hit the barrier, turn 4, entry, inside, but I think it's all OK.

    Engineer: OK, understood.

  35. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: I'm boxing

  36. George RUSSELLWilliams

    George RUSSELL: I'm

    Engineer: going to

George RUSSELL: put it in go race and go on with it. Yep, no problem.

  37. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: OK, so if you want we can do another push, but not sure about the traffic, or we can do a pit start now and then go for the high-field Let me know if you want to try to do...

Charles LECLERC: I'll do another one

    Engineer: Copy

  38. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Can I go to the toilet? Do I have time?

Engineer: If you're desperate, yes, I would prefer you didn't. There's only 16 minutes left.

  39. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Engineer: We're looking at like nine timed on this tire around nine times laps

  40. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: OK, Kimi, we need a bit of liftoff, the brakes are too hot.

  41. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So science on fuel on the soft high footings.

  42. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Okay, press on hold, Lovatec, if you can, please. Press on hold, the battery is going now, you can... I'll be stuck behind. Yeah, the 42s. We have Giovinazzi behind you. Nowhere to go. There is no space behind Giovinazzi. There is space behind Giovinazzi. Mazepin is 13 behind him. But equally, we will have traffic in the race. Yeah, but I want to do some laps alone, so f**k it. Okay.

  43. Sebastian VETTELAston Martin

Engineer: Okay, I'll bring it down a notch. Yeah, yellow flag, exit of four, three four now.

  44. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Engineer: Just go slow. We have our punctures to go to mode Punk mode Punk Okay understood

  45. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Okay so now we've got Schumacher going very slowly through the tunnel he's on the left-hand side of the track. Schumacher going slow in the tunnel on the left-hand side of the track watch for him approach carefully

  46. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Engineer: Are you happy to box to take a look to the out?

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, I still have a question mark on what will happen with these tires, but up to you. I don't know how long they would go.

Engineer: Up to you. Okay, box now. Box now.

  47. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: So Lando, when you get back, I'd like you, so I'm in the pit wall, stay in the car please. We're just checking if they're going to restart it to allow us to do the launch.

  48. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Ok Pierre, let's stand down for the comments a little bit, we'll try to push on to get ready, if we can get going again. And we'll keep the same compound for the practice starts, I think it's probably wise.
