Chinese Grand Prix 2024: Race team radio

150 radio messages were recorded during race at the Chinese Grand Prix 2024, across 20 drivers. 142 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Lando NORRIS had the most, with 21.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: So far, it's quite a lot to say, but I'll be happy.

  2. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: I don't know. Freaking five. Five. Five.

  3. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

  4. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

ZHOU Guanyu: My drink pipe is a bit too short by the way

  5. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Okay, so a dry through and a start from the end. Temperatures are okay there. I think we will need a lift into 14 on the next lap as well.

  6. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Ok mate, how is the balance? It's ok at the moment, the track seems to be rubbed in quite well Understood

  7. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Engineer: A lot less wind is on the outside of the M6.

  8. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: Okay, Pierre, if we can get clutch six, clutch six, that's three o'clock on the multi.

  9. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, there was a little bit of smoke on the decks when

    Engineer: I stopped them.

  10. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: Yeah, maybe for the reference probably like two steps up or whatever I think Around there. I think especially first stint. We don't want to put too much I think

  11. Esteban OCONAlpine

Esteban OCON: I think the balance was really good. We just need to think about the new tires

  12. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: I can't push up. Something wrong with my settings.

    Engineer: Green 11, position 6.

  13. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: before you do your practice start, so you don't get caught by the red light.

  14. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And this last lap, we're quicker everywhere.

  15. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: Sorry, I just fucked my VMAG rotary too much.

    Engineer: That's fine.

  16. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: Yeah, I'm happy. Some good tests there.

  17. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Thank you. Dave's just noticed that your brake balance is not as it was when you left the garage. He's just making sure it's okay.

  18. Esteban OCONAlpine

Esteban OCON: It does smell of fuel quite a bit.

  19. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: Yeah, let's be on it guys long

Pierre GASLY: race different strategy Skip the communication

  20. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: So trying to make a space before Turn 1 if you can. We're happy to lean on tyres on the way into Turn 1.

  21. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: And let's go, we need lift into turn 11 and then no more full load after turn 11.

  22. Pierre GASLYAlpine

    Pierre GASLY: Okay

  23. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: All right, no concerns on our side from energy also no concerns on gears

  24. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, Kev, one way to go. Let's just let go for those tires. DRS is enabled.

  25. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: Ok Daniel, one at a time. We've got the top speed compared to the Alpine. One at a time. Let's get them.

  26. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Engineer: Board pick and release for braking. Board pick and release.

  27. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

ZHOU Guanyu: Okay, I'm sitting at the front of the phone.

  28. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: And consider offset 20 forward for turn 1, back for turn 6.

  29. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: So you can use the Overtake button earlier for a bigger effect.

  30. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: It's for defending, not for overtaking right now.

  31. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: All right open up front

  32. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Lance STROLL: Yeah, it's not great in

    Engineer: the

    Lance STROLL: rear.

  33. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Daniel RICCIARDO: Similar to yesterday, some low speed fun, but that's

    Engineer: the

    Daniel RICCIARDO: rest of it.

  34. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: The traction is really bad out of 30, so I'm actually quite okay. I just don't have the grip. Very vulnerable.

  35. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando, how are the tyres and who are we racing?

Lando NORRIS: I think who we expect for now, hard to know as a priority.

  36. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

    Engineer: Beaming five, beaming five.

  37. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Sector 1, same pace. You are easier on the tyres in 1 and 2, so more management in 1 and 2. You recover it in turn 3, so all good.

  38. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: With dirty air, I think I understand, but I think clean air is okay. I feel like. Copy.

  39. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Engineer: More from Limited than yesterday.

  40. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: I don't feel that bad. I'm trying to be okay. Gasly can't get me!

  41. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  42. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: I got my rear end on it, otherwise, okay.

  43. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Pierre GASLY: If you push me wide, don't drop me off crack.

  44. Lance STROLLAston Martin

    Lance STROLL: Thank you. Sorry.

  45. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Don't get with Kevson Niko. Top 10.

  46. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Lando suggests left hand paddle turn nine. Left hand paddle turn nine.

  47. Yuki TSUNODARB

Engineer: Let's make our race now.

  48. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: Yeah, just please come down.

  49. George RUSSELLMercedes

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  50. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: That was the worst time

  51. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: It's no problem, Alex. You can get them.

  52. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: Yeah, with my tires destroyed, yep.

  53. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: Sorry, but our predictions of where people are on track are just absolutely nowhere.

  54. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, pace is good, but Pacing's wrong. Let's maximize our race. Let's not get too hung up on the people who have boxed

  55. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Happy to go longer if we need to, but the pace is decent.

  56. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: and Lando we agree the pace looks good last lap Leclerc did a 41.9

  57. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Yeah, we're just trying to balance the deg loose. Deg is high. Gap to Ocon is now 2.3

  58. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Nico HULKENBERG: Yeah, that is stable. Feels much more solid than the medium. Now let's...

  59. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: So George just make sure you're looking after these tires to make this stint length required recommending more lifting coast turn 11

  60. Valtteri BOTTASKick Sauber

Engineer: Okay, Valtteri, we can reduce the amount of management in turn one and try to match Hulkenberg in turn one.

  61. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: This tire is much better.

  62. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: I think extend with them

    Engineer: 100%

  63. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: So starting lap 17, we still need plan A minus three.

  64. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: I don't know, this year just hasn't been a good year for me.

  65. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: How much later do you become a pit? Why is

    Engineer: it

    Alexander ALBON: so fast?

  66. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: He's got five laps after us

  67. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Leclerc and Sainz are incentivized to go long. Leclerc might even try the one-stop.

  68. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: Let's not waste too much time with Piastri, but let's not make it too easy for him.

  69. Yuki TSUNODARB

    Engineer: I

Yuki TSUNODA: feel like a James Spaceman, honestly.

  70. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: I got no grip mates. I don't know what's wrong

  71. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Yeah, it looks like rear tyre temperature just through the roof, so lifting coast will help.

  72. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  73. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: And for him, Beaupierre, we're thinking plan B, plan B. How are the tires?

  74. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Would you be happy behind one car? Would you be happy behind two cars?

Lando NORRIS: I think I'd overtake both.

  75. Valtteri BOTTASKick Sauber

Valtteri BOTTAS: Engine is gone, engine gone.

    Engineer: Copy, copy.

  76. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: Tires are okay, I just need some clean air.

  77. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: There's no point saying that, I know, but compared to Daniel Fairstein, especially, the amount of traction he has is crazy, losing a lot in traction, as well as expected from MP1.

  78. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Joking me tell me about it. Oh

  79. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: Why we don't box too

    Engineer: early for us, but

Yuki TSUNODA: how about the boxer you

Engineer: can we stay out we think is better double yellow 1011

  80. Alexander ALBONWilliams

    Engineer: some

Alexander ALBON: huge glitches on my uh on my throttle response surging out the pit lane

  81. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  82. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: everyone will go to the or try and get to the end on a hard apart from Alonso

  83. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando, think about brake balance. Think about brake balance.

  84. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: What do you think about break-off set, Danil? 0 or minus 1? Do you have a view?

  85. Daniel RICCIARDORB

    Engineer: I

Daniel RICCIARDO: think zero. Zero should be okay. All right.

Engineer: Offset zero, when you want.

  86. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: We cannot overtake until finish

Engineer: line. Yeah, finish line, exactly.

  87. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: uh the contact was all at turn 14. i don't know if you spotted anything as you got there there's any debris

  88. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

ZHOU Guanyu: Last corner today, I find it quite tricky to get it right. The car is sliding a bit too much

  89. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Okay, where have I been slow?

Engineer: Yeah, so the main point is braking, so it's turn 11 and turn 14 stand out.

  90. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Engineer: Plan D for Delta for both cars. You

Carlos SAINZ: think it's our best bet?

Engineer: Yes, we do, right now.

  91. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: And give me a scan of the lap, please. Just need more info. The car won't turn so I'm trying to figure out Do bounce wise?

  92. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Can you see any damage?

Engineer: Negative Kev, no damage seen.

  93. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: All right Pierre, looks like there's some debris on track that's still being cleared up. Just be careful with the cars around, there's been a couple collisions in the safety car period.

  94. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Yes, ma'am. Fail B-0-0, OK. Fail B-0-0, OK.

  95. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: How many laps did I manage before? I reckon I can make as far as

    Engineer: the

    Lewis HAMILTON: last 26.

  96. Charles LECLERCFerrari

    Engineer: Suggestion SOC 5.

  97. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: I have no words Daniel, but it was really strong there before the safety car.

  98. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, I could go off, but I'll save

    Engineer: it.

  99. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: If we can lean on the front a bit in turn 1 and 2 might help calm the car with this aerobalance.

  100. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  101. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: for low speed understeer suggest engine braking

Lando NORRIS: no thank you understood

  102. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  103. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: The brake pedal is very long.

  104. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: So box this lap, it'll be a 10-second penalty. Unbelievable Matt, such a joke.

  105. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: Okay, so this is a hard tire. We can push this. We'll try and drag some people in later. Okay, so it's clear at FedExit. Let's crack on.

  106. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  107. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: We're going to need everything you've got to manage these rears.

  108. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: George, there is some scope to push entry turn 7 a little more.

  109. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: On no opportunity, the wider line, turn 3, might be better for pace and rears.

  110. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: Alex, we think cars around you are also struggling here to make the end.

  111. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: Doesn't feel too bad to the woman

  112. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: If there was a safety car, we would lose two places, two Perez and Leclerc. Therefore, we would be keen to take it. What do you think? Probably after lap 44 or something, yes.

  113. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Oscar PIASTRI: How much damage do I have?

    Engineer: Oscar, damage is significant.

  114. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando suggests yellow G3, yellow G3 for late understanding.

  115. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: You told me plan B, I guess.

  116. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: Is

    Lewis HAMILTON: this the right?

    Engineer: Keynote.

  117. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Engineer: So you will be racing everyone on old hards. We still think it's the new medium. But would you prefer one lap old soft?

    Fernando ALONSO: No, no, medium.

    Engineer: Yeah, copy, good.

  118. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: Wait, the front tire is gone, yeah?

  119. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Engineer: Vote 11, vote 11, so Alex 41-5, you are doing 41-8

  120. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And we need secondary KEC position 2, KEC position 2.

  121. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: I've

    Engineer: been

    Max VERSTAPPEN: unreligible so far.

  122. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Can we have margin on front left temperatures to use the front left a bit more just keep taking care of the rear

  123. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Okay, mate, so we need to lose as little time as possible. Fernando comes through as much quicker than us. Let's see if we can capitalize when he attacks Hülkenberg.

    Esteban OCON: Okay.

  124. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Good job at turns 1, 2, 3 this lap.

  125. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Yes, so Pierre is four cars back on nine lap old mediums. He's lapping just over a second a lap quicker at the moment. Let's keep pushing.

  126. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Nico HULKENBERG: It's okay Gary, I see it. I don't

    Engineer: need

Nico HULKENBERG: to know those things.

  127. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Lando, be careful with that. Six laps to go after this one, full concentration.

  128. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

    Logan SARGEANT: That's non-existent, mate.

  129. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: face to a lot so it's looking good at the moment gap currently 10.6

  130. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

Engineer: Give me up 0.7 to prepare better 0.8 and 0.9. Yeah, fine, thank you.

  131. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando, just confirming, if there was a safety car, we would stay out by default. Perfect.

  132. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Has the wind changed a bit? I feel like it has.

Engineer: Directionally similar, potentially calmed down a little bit.

  133. Lando NORRISMcLaren

    Engineer: Full concentration, you know.

  134. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando, the only thing we're getting worried about is locking up. So be conservative, turn six breaking. Yeah, I feel...

    Lando NORRIS: I got it.

  135. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: So that Debbie is on this straight stay on the racing line

  136. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Well done Max, great day's work, kept you on your toes, but nice job.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah that was fantastic, I was on fire, the car was really really good. Yeah fantastic job guys, everyone, well done, great pit stops, I think we did really really well this weekend.

  137. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, Kevin, it's the checkered flag. So we are a real P16. Sorry, it's such a tough race. All comes down to get qualifying wrong. Yesterday. Sorry about that.

  138. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Nico HULKENBERG: Yeah, good job guys, solid race, not very spectacular but a better one than none, right?

Engineer: Yeah, good clean job by you, nice one.

Nico HULKENBERG: Yeah, you're right, I think it was actually one

    Engineer: of

Nico HULKENBERG: my cleanest runs ever. Let's get it better.

  139. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Well done, Max. That bookends a fantastic weekend. Sprint race, pole for the main race and victory. So, yeah, 15 years after the first one. Very well done.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, two cars on the podium as well. So, really good weekend.

Engineer: And you know your engineer's into the stats, so he's just informing that since the last Chinese Grand Prix, you've won 50% of the races that have existed. So, yeah, very, very well done. An incredible achievement.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, that's a good stat. I mean, yeah, it's just incredible what we are doing as a team. So, we can all be very proud of that.

  140. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Engineer: We'll go through here together. It was a good race for Gasly today and it's difficult circumstances but lots of learning which is mainly what we need. Let's come back stronger in Miami together.

  141. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Yes, Will. Should be on the grid.

Engineer: My bad. Concentrate, Will, concentrate.

    Lando NORRIS: Breathe, Will.

  142. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Engineer: Why would we stick with that time? I didn't talk to you because it was not really relevant, but we had a 10 second time penalty,

    Logan SARGEANT: so...

    Engineer: For

    Logan SARGEANT: what?

Engineer: For an under-safety car, we have a two-kick comeback, I don't have all the details.

    Logan SARGEANT: No, I didn't.

Engineer: Okay, copy, we can review, but I think that's why we got the 10 seconds.

Logan SARGEANT: Well, I passed the line ahead of him, so...

  143. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Yep, I won't make that setup change again, but my bad, yeah, thank you guys, good job on the pit stops.

  144. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: It was a tough race out there today Alexis, the best we could have done. We just needed a tiny bit more pace. We'd be there in about five seconds for the points, but well managed. Thank you everyone, thanks for all the hard work.

Alexander ALBON: I think we'll be ready in Miami.

Engineer: Yep, well said. Let's come back stronger.

  145. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: Unlucky there mate, that was going really well to start with. Yeah,

Lance STROLL: so ridiculous man, just the whole train in front of me just stopped twice, even down the main straight there was like someone that braked trying to get in the hairpin.

Engineer: Yeah, no we saw it, so it definitely wasn't just you, it was kind of chaos wasn't it.

  146. Esteban OCONAlpine

    Esteban OCON: Yeah, yeah, okay

    Engineer: well done

  147. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Ok mate, well done, so the 11, our best result so far. Yeah,

Esteban OCON: fair result, looking at our weekend really, so sorry for that guys, but yeah good effort this weekend, it's been our best result, so yeah, as you said, we keep going and yeah, thank you for the quicker car this weekend.

  148. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Good job with the damage sustained on the car there. It was significant what we see in the data So good job to get points from the weekend for us.

Oscar PIASTRI: Yeah Tough race Yep Not much else to say. Well done to Len on the podium Very good effort

    Engineer: Yep,

Oscar PIASTRI: let's go again in Miami. Thank you

  149. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  150. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: Yep, top race out there. We had to try that at the end. It looked like it was worthwhile giving it a go. You put in some good laps. But yeah, a couple things to review from this one.

Pierre GASLY: Where did we finish?

Engineer: So we came in in P13, Esteban in P11. A

Pierre GASLY: couple of situations where we should have done better, but yeah, we'll work on it. But I think with the upgrade, we would have been in the fight with Ilk, so we just need to keep bringing more, keep developing, keep finding performance, and we'll get closer to these guys.
