United States Grand Prix 2018: Practice 2 team radio

16 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the United States Grand Prix 2018, across 7 drivers. 15 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Brendon HARTLEY had the most, with 6.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: Update on track conditions, worst part this morning was last sector, turn 14-15 How is this so far?

Brendon HARTLEY: Yeah, sector's okay at the moment, obviously very wet but not standing water

Engineer: Copy that, keep us posted

  2. Stoffel VANDOORNEMcLaren

Engineer: Stoffel suggest to warm the brakes into turn 11 then recharge off and sock seven sock seven

  3. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: Consider one step down engine braking for the last sector.

  4. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Brendon HARTLEY: OK, yeah traction is still one of the main issues, I would say I understand mid-corner is not so bad, but mid-corner traction is the bigger problem, actually I had quite a bit of over-rotation mid-corner in the last sector, I think the rear tyres are getting very hot.

    Engineer: Confirmed, confirmed.

  5. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Brendon HARTLEY: But yeah, I would still say main limitation is from the rack, so I'll need to wax it. I understand the corner is definitely there, but I've had to come down on the tools to stabilise the rail.

  6. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: Charge on, if you want to cool down, how far are we from Inter?

Brendon HARTLEY: Yeah we can maybe look at it now, get the cross over

  7. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: Happy, it's ready for Inter, what do you think about the crossover?

Brendon HARTLEY: I mean there's still a lot of water on track, but yeah I think we should give it a go.

Engineer: Copy that. The Inter is not going to last very long, so I hope it makes sense to wait a bit. We don't have much time left on the clock, we are 18 minutes to check out flag.

    Brendon HARTLEY: OK, copy that.

  8. Pierre GASLYToro Rosso

Engineer: If the next lap is not coming faster, you can decide to box, just let me know.

    Pierre GASLY: Ok copy.

  9. Sergey SIROTKINWilliams

Engineer: And go deploy, go deploy. Open the lap, if there's too much standing water we can abort.

  10. Pierre GASLYToro Rosso

Engineer: OK Pierre, charge on, and we box and keep up the pace in the inlap.

    Pierre GASLY: OK,

Engineer: I don't want to damage the tyres if we need to use them though. Yeah, yeah, just don't be too slow.

  11. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Try to warm up the brakes

  12. Sergey SIROTKINWilliams

Engineer: OK Sergey, let's try one more, so keep pushing. One more lap.

    Sergey SIROTKIN: Yeah, copy.

    Engineer: No,

Sergey SIROTKIN: I think it's going worse and worse. I would rather do a cool lap and try again.

  13. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: I'm happy to go out, we are not going to learn anything on this, you know that right?

Engineer: What is your goal? Let's go!

  14. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: What do you think of our conditions?

Sebastian VETTEL: Our conditions are fine to continue. These tyres are not great.

  15. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  16. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: And nice and steady into the box. You

Lewis HAMILTON: know when you tell me to go steady, I'm not going to go steady.

Engineer: Yeah, yep, never, never change these spots.
