Team radio transcript

British Grand Prix 2019: Race team radio

106 radio messages were recorded during race at the British Grand Prix 2019, across 16 drivers. 99 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Valtteri BOTTAS had the most, with 18.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

  7. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: We do a radio check around the track.

  8. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: So tyres are still on the cool side especially at the rear at the moment so if you've got a bit of oversteer maybe that

  9. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Can you check the tidal vibrations? They seem a bit higher on this set.

Engineer: Yeah, we see that too Max. We see the same issue.

  10. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And Charles, all good on the data side?

    Charles LECLERC: Copy,

    Engineer: take

Charles LECLERC: more margin for the first two laps on the hard, compared to what we have in our systems. It's very very difficult to warm the tyres up.

  11. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Understood. And very, very tricky in the first lap, so the first lap will be quite slow I think. Okay.

  12. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Which way is the wind?

Engineer: So it's tailwind into Stowe.

  13. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: And Carlos measured wind looks a bit calmer but similar to qualifying for direction and what you were doing in the high speed looks good

  14. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Lift off before turn 6, leader lift off before turn 6 and turn 10.

  15. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: and we need a bit of full throttle on the last part and going to the grid

  16. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: We tend to

Lewis HAMILTON: be more on the shallow side of all

Engineer: the practice. Negative Luce, it's the same one. Yes, we're about 2% on the shallow side.

Lewis HAMILTON: Right now I'm quite a lot shallow.

  17. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So down to first and then neutral and switch off P2 with the foot off the brakes Just stay in the car while they're taking you to the pole slot and practice your start lights

  18. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Offset one click rearwards to minus one, VBAL 6, VBAL 6, and mode 3, then recharge off, pre-launch rev check, with mode 3, recharge off, pre-launch rev check, and then stay in P1, stay in P1, and I'll switch over to Bolero for one more radio check, radio check Pierre, radio check.

    Pierre GASLY: OK.

Engineer: How is the front flap, front flap question?

Pierre GASLY: I want minus, minus two.

  19. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: I'm going to go through again, no change.

Engineer: Copy that Nico, driving straight through again. OK, on this last lap you can push to turn 14, then recharge on and cool the car going to the grid.

  20. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, I had low power in that lap, if

Engineer: you can take away. Yeah, copy that Carlos, we're checking.

  21. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Can you check the tidal vibrations? They seem a bit high on this set.

Engineer: Copy. Yeah, we see that too Max. We see the same issue.

  22. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Radio check. Radio's loud and clear, Lewis.

Lewis HAMILTON: Feels like it's getting warmer.

Engineer: Yeah it feels like it's just picked up a degree or so, we think it will get warmer as the race progresses but not by a huge amount. It'll probably end up being basically between Collie and FP2. So in terms of coming down that half hole, I think that's probably a wise thing.

  23. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: OK, thank you for getting in the car early, we've got a few things going on in the background. We will start the telemetry in a couple of minutes, and we can do a couple of clutch tests, OK? Make sure the telemetry is on.

  24. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: So run through your formation lap procedures, the gearbox should remain synced whilst on the grid, pit limiter off for the dummy grid launch, and a reminder a static by-point fine please once the car is fired up and you're on the ground, carry out your dummy grid launch to your third gear, expect some wheelspin so don't get spooked by that, and then into mode 12, as always, as and when you can, shift between first and second during the formation lap, and try to confirm your gear sync before turn 6, then as you come out of turn 17, so 16-17 is the left-right, one ramp out of turn 17, before the final kink onto the main straight, and then two burnouts after the exit of turn 18, and if you find yourself with space and time, perform an extra ramp rather than coasting down into your pitfalls.

Max VERSTAPPEN: I can use the brakes to heat them up quite a bit during the... Lap, there's no limitation?

    Engineer: Correct.

  25. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

    Engineer: Carlos, radio check

    Carlos SAINZ: Yep, all good

Engineer: Loud and clear for B, no radar on the radar at the moment

Carlos SAINZ: Just thinking about going turn up on the flap that I might need at the end of a stint

Engineer: So Carlos, to confirm that it's up one turn then

Carlos SAINZ: Nothing basically, but maybe just to have a turn that I might need at the end of a stint, but I'm not sure Yeah, let's go half a turn up

Engineer: OK, up half a turn. Can you just check the position of your microphone Carlos? You're quite quiet I'm not sure if you're just speaking quietly because it's calm here, but just double check the position

Carlos SAINZ: Radio check, radio check, better?

    Engineer: Yep, that's good On

Carlos SAINZ: track it was OK or not?

Engineer: On track it was fine earlier, yeah

  26. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: The brakes weren't working, and they just suddenly worked, so I expected to hit it quite early.

Engineer: Copy, I cannot talk to you, copy that.

  27. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

    Engineer: Only take is available

  28. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

    Pierre GASLY: Frontman hit me.

    Engineer: Copy, any damage?

Pierre GASLY: Doesn't look like it.

  29. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

    Engineer: Another take is available.

  30. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

    Engineer: Engine 3, position 1. Engine 3, position 1.

  31. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

    Engineer: Looses DRS

  32. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, both Hasses pitted with damage. Magnussen is currently in the train and getting blue flags ahead of you.

  33. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And keep 7th on the main straight, keep 7th, both cars in front fighting, you can see that, 1.3 in front.

  34. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Mode 6, mode 6, think long term, think about your tyres.

  35. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: Kuala Lumpur, this is Stephen. Greer is also struggling.

Engineer: Copy that, Nico. You're doing a great job considering the traffic ahead of you.

Nico HULKENBERG: Thai is done for great, I think. We need to prepare to go early.

    Engineer: Copy.

  36. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Hülkenberg is struggling with tyres. Hülkenberg struggling with tyres.

  37. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, your tyres look good at the moment, some cars showing some rear graining.

  38. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: And Louis says DRS. Got one second.

  39. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Chassis dash set to position two.

  40. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Something's loose around the pedals.

Engineer: Okay, understood. Kevin, we don't want to take any risks. So if there's something loose, we should come back in. Okay, we should retire.

    Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Understood.

  41. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Gap to Leclerc 2.3 looks like his front left is starting to open up

  42. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Completed lap 7, we are on plan A, Gasly 1.1 behind with DRS.

  43. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: and not urgent default 4-9 please default 4-9 not urgent

  44. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Copy that, Nico. Suggest 0.2% up on front wing, full stop.

  45. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos you can do more in turn seven don't over push the entry of turn seven

  46. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Okay, this we are seeing the front left, where?

Lewis HAMILTON: Yeah, there's a lot of air.

  47. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: okay Lando doing a really good job doing a really good job still think it's plan A currently plan A currently

  48. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Okay Valtteri, won't be long, start using your tyres, Lewis will have the RS

  49. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Look for Leclerc and Max at pit exit. Leclerc and Max at pit exit.

  50. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Ah, no grip.

  51. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Get through signs as quickly as you can, get past signs as quickly as you can.

  52. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: We've lost GPS, so look out for Lewis.

  53. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Okay, next car ahead is Giovinazzi. He's out on 14 lap hold mediums. He's doing 32.9

  54. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Lando, we're in the same position as Ricciardo in front, our race is going to be with him. Albon and Hülkenberg are six seconds back, they're also we think on a two stop. We want to maintain good tyres for the next pit stop, so we want to maintain the tyres for the next pit stop. And our goal here should be to stay with Ricciardo.

  55. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Gasly is stuck behind signs, that is good.

  56. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

    Engineer: Lewis Space 30.2

  57. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: He's moving really light

  58. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So Lewis will try to go longer, so you need to save in high speed. 1.3 safe.

  59. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So the safety car at turn four, it picked up Lewis.

  60. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Lewis HAMILTON: Great job guys.

    Engineer: How

Lewis HAMILTON: many laps did I do there?

Engineer: You did 20 laps on that tyre.

Lewis HAMILTON: That felt longer than 20.

Engineer: Yeah, for you and me both.

  61. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Why is there a safety car?

Engineer: Was doing us in the gravel.

    Sebastian VETTEL: And?

Engineer: I should be in soon.

  62. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: So behind the safety guard we have Hamilton, Bottas and Vettel. Behind you is Max on fresh base tires and Leclerc as well on fresh base tires.

  63. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: How the hell did we lose the position? Still a long race, anything can happen so stay focus

  64. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Betel Ahead has fitted a hard tyre, so he could in theory go to the end and Gasly also has fitted a hard tyre. Just be careful with any overtakes on Gasly.

Max VERSTAPPEN: And other way around.

  65. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: just easy on the brakes for the moment Max, front discs are hot easy on the brakes

  66. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: Your front wing is broken, your front wing is broken.

    Sergio PEREZ: Yes, confirmed.

Engineer: Box to slap, box to box, pick confirmed.

  67. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So we've got reports of debris at turn 6, gap to Valtteri 1.3.

  68. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Is something broken on the left side of the car?

    Engineer: Everything is fine.

  69. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: So I've got a hit on the right left.

Engineer: No puncture yet Nico, no puncture seen. OK Nico, we think the car's OK, we don't see any problems in data. So let's keep focused, long way to go.

  70. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: And Valtteri at 1.1, he is on the medium tyre so he has to stop again.

  71. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: give you up behinds on newer prime tire newer prime tire seven laps newer adjust diff if you need to lock up the diff if you've got some oversteer

  72. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Mode 8, just to top up the battery before you get to Seb. Mode 8.

  73. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, 1 tenth more pace would clear Lando from Ricciardo's DRS.

    Carlos SAINZ: Copy, 1 tenth.

  74. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Ok Lando, we're trying to work it out, we've just got Ricciardo behind which makes this difficult.

Lando NORRIS: It's ok, I got screwed over by the strategy so...

Engineer: So dude, it was a very poorly timed safety car but there's still 23 laps to go, there's still lots to play for here, so let's keep it up.

  75. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Race situation Valtteri, cars behind on hard, they might go to the end, so this pace is good to clear them, but we don't want to drop at the end of the stint.

  76. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

    Alexander ALBON: Pond left greening

Engineer: Do you think any chance to make it to the end? Do you think any chance to make it?

Alexander ALBON: You should have told me this earlier Not now

Engineer: We didn't know there was a situation We have a situation What's the feedback please?

Alexander ALBON: Well if it looks like there's no chance then we're gonna try and make it last

Engineer: Copy that We have to try to make it work We have a situation

  77. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: It's good Max, keep the pressure on, your battery's in a healthy state, get ready to take the opportunity here. Use it all only when you need it.

  78. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: That's happened with DRS, 1.1 diang.

  79. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I heard something strange out of third 7 on pickup.

  80. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Lando so the goal here now is to catch the cars in front so we're going to drive flat out catch the guys and try and catch the guys in front and have some fun overtaking them. Russell should be behind you now

  81. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Verstappen and Vettel just crashed, so be on stand-by.

  82. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: What the f***?

  83. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  84. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: And what was he doing?

  85. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: What is my car okay tires all okay, I'll get you posted

  86. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Skybox for north change, the box for north change

  87. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So we're going to try and pull these cars out of our pit window, we'll have a free pit stop so we'll be safe to the end. So now back on plan A.

  88. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: So we're as happy as we can be on the car side of things Max, suspension's fine, tyres are fine. Alright, we've got a bit off to get a podium. How can the floor be okay, I mean I massively hit the bump. Yeah yeah, I mean in terms of bodywork we can't do anything about it, that is what it is.

  89. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Ricciardo should have DRS this lap, keep looking after the rears even though he's close Carlos, you need to manage the traction

  90. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: So Sebastian just beat it now and the tires his tires were really good at the front

  91. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So we push Leclerc out of our piston window.

  92. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: OK, so box, box, box, box. You

    Lewis HAMILTON: sure?

  93. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Valtteri BOTTAS: Starting to have a bit of vibration on the fronts.

Engineer: Copy, we saw that, so it won't be long now.

  94. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: How many laps are left?

Engineer: So 8 laps including this one So Valtteri is in this lap, Valtteri in this lap And

    Lewis HAMILTON: what's

    Engineer: the

    Lewis HAMILTON: gap?

    Engineer: Gap 3.2

  95. Charles LECLERCFerrari

    Charles LECLERC: Where is Lewis?

Engineer: How much in front and what's his lap time? So Hamilton is 26 seconds in front, lap time 29.0

  96. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Get in there, Lewis. That's the home win, mate. And you get the fastest lap for the day too, mate. Awesome job. What a day.

  97. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Ah, what a day! Ah, I love you Silverstone. All the crowd, thank you so much for all coming out.

    Engineer: I

Lewis HAMILTON: appreciate you all. And to the team, thank you so much for the opportunity to be a part of this.

  98. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: HPP 3 to position 14 and Lewis just done the fastest lap of the race on the last lap So final order Lewis, yourself, Leclerc, Gas, Lever, Stappen, Sainz, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Kveit, Hülkenberg Don't know what to say probably is better if I shut up

  99. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: You did a really good job, so positions Hamilton, Bottas and yourself P3, then Gasly and Verstappen.

Charles LECLERC: Happy, thank you, happy anyway with P3 I think, best we could have done today, we've been unlucky with the safety car though but anyway we couldn't do better than that on our side, thank you.

  100. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Checkered flag, P4, excellent Pierre, excellent race mate, well done. Thanks

Pierre GASLY: boys, thanks, sorry for Max. Good thing, would have been a problem there but, sorry for you guys. But I'll be with the P4s. Let's just keep pushing

    Engineer: like

Pierre GASLY: this man, feels good.

Engineer: Feels good to be fighting

    Pierre GASLY: again. Well

Engineer: Pierre, that's been a really strong weekend, really positive and the best finish to date, so well done.

    Pierre GASLY: Thanks.

  101. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Okay, well done mate. Lucky day today, but

    Max VERSTAPPEN: nice job.

Engineer: Engine 11, position 12, engine 11, position 12 and fail 84 when you can. I love Max. I'm not quite sure what he was thinking about that.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, unbelievable. We should have been in P2 today. Yeah,

Engineer: that was a great move into Stowe as well, so yeah, the pace looked good though.

Max VERSTAPPEN: I still don't know how I got this car to the finish, honestly, with that hit.

  102. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Whoo, that's the chequered flag, chequered flag, P6 mate, P6. Get in Carlos, great drive, great drive.

Carlos SAINZ: I don't know what to say.

Engineer: Qualified in the whole race. We need scenario one Carlos, scenario one. Great job mate.

Carlos SAINZ: Oh it's proper quali, oh thank you guys.

    Engineer: Great job.

  103. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Okay, scenario 12, scenario 12, nice job mate, P7.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, understood, thanks guys.

Engineer: Okay, that's P7 for you and P10 for Nico, nor is this P11. Okay,

Daniel RICCIARDO: yeah well done guys, that was obviously frustrating, I was trying to struggle to stay close in the high speed, but yep, at least we got both cars home and in the points, so thank you.

Engineer: Yeah, nice job mate, it's good to be back in the points. Okay,

Daniel RICCIARDO: yeah well done guys, that was obviously frustrating, I was trying to struggle to stay close in the high speed, but yep, at least we got both cars home and in the points, so thank you.

Engineer: Yeah, nice job mate, it's good to be back in the points.

  104. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Yes, yes, yes, P8, P8, well done mate, well done, great race

Kimi RAIKKONEN: Thanks, we were lacking a bit of speed on the straight, but the car was actually very good and it's just the top speed we were lacking

  105. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Engineer: P9, Dani, P9. Very good job. F**k

Daniil KVYAT: I know how to drive this car. Thank you guys, grazie mille a tutti. Dopo ieri era dura ma ce l'abbiamo fatta, fare una gara della madonna. And never give up.

  106. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Great job, Niko. Great job. That was hard. Sorry, mate, but you did a fantastic job there. Scenario 12, please. Scenario 12.

Nico HULKENBERG: I just don't understand why we couldn't stop early. We just cost ourselves this race. I was genuinely struggling. Not putting any gains or any **** like that. You've just got to believe me sometimes. **** believe.

Engineer: Understand, Niko. Fully understand. As I said, you did an absolutely fantastic job with what you had today, Niko. It

Nico HULKENBERG: was obvious. My tires were at 140 and still, no, no, he's fine. Let him stay out. So good.
