German Grand Prix 2019: Qualifying team radio

47 radio messages were recorded during qualifying at the German Grand Prix 2019, across 16 drivers. 44 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Carlos SAINZ had the most, with 8.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  2. Robert KUBICAWilliams

Engineer: OK, robots are pressed out.

  3. George RUSSELLWilliams

    Engineer: The

George RUSSELL: front is a biter as well.

  4. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: So we'll have a break into 8, 12 and 13 just to get some break temp.

  5. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: We have new brakes on the car new brakes on the car

  6. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Kimi RAIKKONEN: Ok, I have quite a lot of vibration on the front tyre.

Engineer: Copy, vibration on the front tyre. A lot.

    Kimi RAIKKONEN: Yeah, a lot.

  7. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: How is the balance, Lance? Yeah, it's a

Lance STROLL: bit oversteer, but I think I'll be OK. It's

    Engineer: a

Lance STROLL: nice run. Mainly the medium-low speed. Just feels like lack of grip on the rear.

    Engineer: Copy that, Lance.

  8. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

    Engineer: Ok,

Sebastian VETTEL: there is an issue. I lost power. Have a look. Ok. Something seems to blow up. Air blowing out somewhere.

    Engineer: Slow down, slow down.

  9. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Why is Sebastian slow in the straights? I think he may have an issue. He may have an issue. So you can overtake him. And now Sebastian behind. Is Seb okay? He's coming in. Sebastian is coming in. It will be mode push for last corner. Mode push. Nobody is pushing behind, right? Nobody is pushing behind.

  10. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Terms and sectors to Leclerc, we're two and a half tenths down in sector one, you lost that at turn one Two tenths down in sector two and you are purple sector three

  11. Romain GROSJEANHaas

    Engineer: On the

Romain GROSJEAN: left hand side of the seat there is a seatbelt that came loose and it's blocking my elbow.

  12. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  13. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Okay, look out for Giovinazzi behind, a Hulkenberg behind him, time-lapse.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Hey, you need to tell me those things earlier.

Engineer: Yeah, this is not the only conversation I'm having, mate.

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah,

    Engineer: well

Max VERSTAPPEN: then, abort the others.

  14. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  15. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: And main losses to Lewis as 1 tenth turn 2, tiny bit turn 13.

  16. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Do we have time for another set of tyres?

Engineer: No, we do not have time for another set of tyres.

  17. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: A bunch of

Lewis HAMILTON: cars backing up. I

Engineer: just should have time, should have time.

  18. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: Am

    Lewis HAMILTON: I in trouble?

Engineer: Negative. Just looking out for Norris behind.

  19. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

    Alexander ALBON: Yeah, but what's

    Engineer: up

    Alexander ALBON: joke, okay,

    Engineer: let's understand. That's p17 box box.

Alexander ALBON: Yeah. Oh my god

  20. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Rear tires were better in the previous run Tom, and the carcass was 3-4 degrees higher leaving the carriage in this run, to let you know Copy,

    Engineer: copy

  21. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Stop in front of the garage. So Carlos, cars eliminated were Lando, Albon, Russell, Kubica and Vettel.

  22. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: Oh, he's just so f***ing stupid.

  23. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: So, Carlos, we finished P13, but Raikkonen in P5 was a 1.13.06, so that is one and a half tenths to P5 from where you were. We were obviously the first car to set the lap, and we did it with the extra fuel on board. So I think going into Q2, we're still in a strong shape, it's going to be really tight, and it's going to be about maximising these two laps.

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, good news then. Let's get everything right. So, let's get though.

  24. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And we need tyre face to T1, T1.

  25. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: So Carlos as a reminder we've added the flap so I think you need to be nice and progressive with the inputs around the lap and consider whether you need the the toggle in turn eight or not you may not need it may be better to avoid the snap in entry okay

Carlos SAINZ: I'll judge it like thank you

  26. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

    Nico HULKENBERG: Where is everybody?

Engineer: So you've got VAT 10 seconds behind on an out lap Miko. Don't worry about it, just concentrate on your best lap. It'll be fine.

  27. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Pierre GASLY: Are my gears synced?

Engineer: Yes, gears are synced, yes.

  28. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Oh, no, I lost power, I lost power! Aye, I lost power on this straight.

Engineer: OK, we'll have to box please, Max, box.

  29. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: God dammit, 110's down to turn 6.

Engineer: Yeah Nico, a little bit lost at the exit of 8 as well. And sector 3 was particularly strong Nico, so on balance I don't think it's made a big difference in terms of toes. Nice clean lap will get you through.

  30. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Any balance suggest for man? First

Romain GROSJEAN: spot in wine tromping

  31. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: No, this is not good, just lag, everything.

  32. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Max, where are you struggling with the lag that you're talking about, please?

Max VERSTAPPEN: Turn 1, turn 8 into the stadium, out of 13, yeah, almost everywhere. Copy. Out of 16, and these tyres also didn't have the grip. They were already way too hard out of the garage.

Engineer: OK, so Box, look out for the Weybridge.

  33. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

    Daniel RICCIARDO: Alright.

    Engineer: That

Daniel RICCIARDO: was close. Alright. Sorry, guys.

  34. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, once I saw I was not improving in sector 3, I went for it in the last two corners and locked up, lacking a bit of front there at the moment

Engineer: Yeah, I have a feeling the car can take more front. Yeah, that's good learning. Good learning Carlos. So URP7 in that session Raikkonen is one tenth faster Verstappen is less than one tenth faster than Raikkonen and Hülkenberg, Grosjean, Perez all very close one tenth slower than you So it's going to be very tight again in Q3. It's about optimizing all the pieces A

Carlos SAINZ: lot of understeer in turn 6 also for your info. Turn 6, 8 and the last two corners, understeer

Engineer: Copy, stop in front of the garage

  35. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: A reminder about track limits for the first run, and another couple of laps, cars, I just left the pit lane, Gasly and Grosjean, so three cars still in the pits. That'll be strut two, and you're good to go. It's all quiet in the pit lane, good time to push.

  36. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I think I'm the steering 12.

Engineer: Understood, keep up the pace on the wave please, whilst being easy on the brakes. Did you run wide at 12 max?

    Max VERSTAPPEN: No.

    Engineer: Front wing?

Max VERSTAPPEN: First we have to check it, but I would say like 3 clicks.

  37. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Ok Kimi, first of all, front wing You will be on scrub if you want to go again on scrub or we can go at the end of the session

  38. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: Front switch delta, stay negative, front switch delta, stay negative, boxy slap, box box, pit confirm.

  39. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: OK, give me more charge and we need a very slow in please, very slow in. So follow your delta, stay negative.

  40. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Get in there Lewis, that's the one mate. Lewis this is Toto, you never stop to amaze us, congratulations. Thank you Toto, great job guys, I don't know how he did that one but I'm grateful for that work. No problem mate, yeah, as Toto said you never fail to surprise.

  41. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: P5 Kimi, P5, amazing job, amazing job, well done.

    Kimi RAIKKONEN: Thank you.

  42. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: That's the front row slot, P2.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, not bad, but it seems like the full cone flying is running away from us.

Engineer: Good effort Max, have a good race from there tomorrow.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Exactly. I couldn't be negative because of the Mercedes cars.

Engineer: Yep, it's not a problem, so stay on track.

  43. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So Lewis didn't improve on that last one. So he's on pole 11.7 and Verstappen still 12.1

  44. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: It's a good result from qualifying, mate. Pretty happy with that. We can have a good day from there.

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, good job, guys. Good turnaround from Silverstone. Homework based off. Bravo.

  45. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Okay Roman, so that's P6 dude, P6. Good job dude, awesome work, awesome work. Oh yeah baby, that was a hell of a lap!

  46. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Excellent work mate, a P4, only a few hundredths of a P2.

Pierre GASLY: Yeah, I missed turn 8.

    Engineer: Negative. I'm

Pierre GASLY: checking it, don't worry.

    Engineer: It

Pierre GASLY: was a good lap, I missed turn 8. Anyway, thanks to all the guys after yesterday's job. Thanks to all the mechanics, everybody.

    Engineer: Now,

Pierre GASLY: let's focus on tomorrow. Well done Pierre, that was a very good lap. Unfortunately you lost that lap, but it doesn't matter, it still holds you in P4. Because of track limits, but that's a really good effort. Thanks.

Engineer: Yeah, for turn 17, that last lap was deleted. We are still P4. Good job mate, keep watching that negative delta, thank you.

Pierre GASLY: Does the Mercedes already miss law?

Engineer: Yeah. That's OK, at least you're showing an effort if you're trying and you're behind them. Follow the instructions when you come in, you can leave the car in P1.

  47. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Okay, sorry mate, that's P13 and we're two hundredths from P10

Daniel RICCIARDO: Alright, that was close, alright, sorry guys

Engineer: No worries mate, race is tomorrow
