United States Grand Prix 2019: Qualifying team radio

36 radio messages were recorded during qualifying at the United States Grand Prix 2019, across 16 drivers. Max VERSTAPPEN had the most, with 4.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

  3. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Ten cars have set times at the moment and we're currently P2

  4. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I have again vibrations on these tires. It's insane. Again, I guess a similar mistake as last time.

  5. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Lap fell very clean guys, for your info.

Engineer: Yeah, looked like a good lap Carlos. There's a couple of things we can find but it's definitely a good lap to start, well done.

  6. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So we think the track has improved so we'll take another lap

  7. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: I just want the same balance, so try and match it.

Engineer: Okay, understood, yeah. We'll do our best with the track improvement, yeah.

  8. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: Still struggling a bit, turn 15 over rotation.

  9. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Lewis HAMILTON: Where

    Engineer: am I?

Lewis HAMILTON: Where am I down in the middle sector?

Engineer: There's very little in the middle sector so that voucher has only gone purple by a matter of hundredths. In fact one hundredth. There's anything tiny bit in turn 12 but very small.

  10. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: I mean, if I've got the quota, I can just stay out and keep practicing.

Engineer: You have time available, so we're happy for you to take one more.

  11. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Very good lap, P4 now.

Pierre GASLY: What lap time did Norris?

    Engineer: 33.4, 33.4, our lap time 33.5.

  12. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

    Engineer: We're out, we're out.

  13. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Currently P1, I'll let you know. And we are safely through to Q2. And doing a good job, keep doing what you're doing.

  14. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: So Hamilton bought us in front of Sebastian both of them in medium compound

  15. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Just one question, do you think the medium runners are going to do a build-up?

Engineer: Carlos, we think not, if we were going on medium we wouldn't do a build-up, we're just checking what they did earlier in the weekend Yeah, previously they've gone straight to timed lap, we expect them to go straight to timed lap

  16. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: let me know if you can go faster question I

Charles LECLERC: don't think I can with these tires and I don't think it's good anyway I don't

    Engineer: need

    Charles LECLERC: more mileage so

  17. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Romain GROSJEAN: I can't go any faster. That's all the task can give me.

  18. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, didn't feel as much of a peak on that run, so I felt like I was working the tyres a bit harder. Front wasn't ready for turn one.

  19. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: Bit

Lewis HAMILTON: limiter is oscillating massively. OK, copy.

  20. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Louis this is all so this problem this what's happening

  21. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Romain GROSJEAN: that out lap was a joke that out lap was a joke that completely me what was that strategy we couldn't be aware of it

    Engineer: i

Romain GROSJEAN: don't know i don't want you to start the lap with the tire not even at 90 degrees

  22. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Good job, Kevin. Really good. We'll take it. We'll make what we can of it tomorrow.

  23. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: OK, nice one, that's P9, Q3, nice job.

Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, nice, good job.

  24. Lando NORRISMcLaren

    Lando NORRIS: Nice Joe.

Engineer: Yep, well done, nice work. Right head down let's concentrate on Q3 now.

  25. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: We might be through into Q3 because our other cars may be getting lap times disqualified, so we just need to be prepared for Q3.

  26. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: We had a big gust of wind, we had a big gust of wind in this lap, clear from data, we lost a lot of loads.

  27. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: How much am I down?

Engineer: Currently at P5, Valtteri P1, 3 tenths ahead.

  28. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Aren't we a bit early?

  29. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: And guess who's on pole? Yes! Indeed. Valtteri, congratulations, mega.

  30. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Hard luck mate, that was really good effort. Anyway, it's still a good result, but I just felt like in Q3 it completely went away from us in terms of grip. Anyway, good starting position.

Engineer: Yeah, good effort Max, it's massively tight out there, so decent starting grip for tomorrow, so good effort, good job. Yeah, exactly, two more rudder points.

  31. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: charge on charge on okay I'm afraid that won't be enough we are pitting looks like the rear axle was quite difficult

  32. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: I've lost so much in those trains, especially now without the slipstream, anyway, fourth

Engineer: Copy, we will check all the data, you've done a good job

  33. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Yeah, I was saying I lost a bit on turn one and then maybe tried a bit too hard in the middle section Yeah, and I asked a bit too much from the rear I think in the first run there was definitely margin in the high speed in turn 19 Yeah, but I didn't I want Yeah, I wanted to make sure that I'm not getting caught, you know, so I left some margin for the last run But yeah Yeah, okay. It was well 100s. I mean Okay, anyways, grazie a tutti. Thank you. We have the insight tomorrow

  34. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Yeah, well done Alex, you're getting closer, well done. Yep, thank you. And just for info Alex, on that last time lap you just dropped off the red and white kerb, so your last lap was deleted, but still P6 with a faster first lap.

  35. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Think it will be P9 mate. Nice job. Okay.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Nice. Okay, don't forget. Thanks guys

  36. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Hold on, Carlos. P7. We're P7. Good job, mate. Be good starting from there tomorrow. If they get close, how close? Just over three-tenths, Carlos. I think we nailed two laps, guys. Congrats. Let's do it from here tomorrow. Yeah, well done. It's been a good afternoon today. Let's do our homework and we'll put a good result out tomorrow as well. Yeah. Good job, Adrian. Adriano. Also, these ones on you. Good effort from P3. Thanks, mate. Great job today. Let's bring it into tomorrow as well.
