Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2020: Practice 1 team radio

77 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2020, across 18 drivers. 75 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Alexander ALBON had the most, with 9.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Esteban OCONRenault

Esteban OCON: The steering wheel is quite on the left side.

    Engineer: OK.

    Esteban OCON: Right side, sorry.

    Engineer: Copy.

  2. Esteban OCONRenault

Esteban OCON: Can I stop pushing or?

Engineer: I'd like you to do a quick in-lap, aero P4 5th gear after turn 7, so a quick but, you know, don't want to be flat out.

  3. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So Lewis, we're seeing very high front brake temps. Can you just make sure you're off the brake pedal? We're seeing some residual brake pressure.

Lewis HAMILTON: Yeah, I'm off the brake. Yeah, I'm not on the brake, man.

Engineer: OK, copy. We're seeing some residual brake pressure. It may be a sensor offset, but it looks like discs are actually climbing very high as well.

Lewis HAMILTON: Yeah, something's not right. I'll come in.

    Engineer: OK, so box-box.

  4. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: If you just cancel the magic, we'll come in without the magic on, just keep the B-Bow rearwards.

  5. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: The

Lewis HAMILTON: car feels like it's braking the whole time.

Engineer: Yeah, affirm, that's what we're seeing.

  6. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Okay, so box box box. We're going for cruisers out of seven and out of nine. I'll advise when you get there It'll be cruise mode two

  7. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: the other car has got an issue with brakes and try to get some temperature in the front brakes

  8. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: We're going to stop on your marks. There will be no pistol practice as we lost half the crew

  9. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

    Nicholas LATIFI: There's

    Engineer: a

Nicholas LATIFI: vibration on the left tire, I

    Engineer: don't know if

Nicholas LATIFI: the tires aren't balanced It's a very small one

Engineer: Small one, copy, and you will have Wilhelm 2 exit of 14 Brakes are looking good, brakes are looking good I've seen your rear tire stamp, we need to drop them in the last sector Drop the rears in the last sector

  10. Esteban OCONRenault

Engineer: Okay, so again, we can stay recharge off just to improve the pace a little bit

  11. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Try and sync here too if you can

  12. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Ok, tyres are looking good, you can look at your dash, we are close to what we discussed.

  13. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: So the next push lap will be done without the RS, please.

  14. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, I have a problem.

    Engineer: OK, understood.

  15. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Scenario 12, Scenario 12 please.

  16. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: Slow down we have a problem

  17. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: Ok Dani, we push again now, we push again now.

  18. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  19. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: OK, so work the tyres on the outlap. Daniel is stopped between turns 9 and 11, halfway up the straight. He has managed to stop the car at a marshall post, so there is a gap that they can just push it through. It's currently double yellows there.

  20. Pietro FITTIPALDIHaas

    Engineer: VSC, VSC.

  21. Pietro FITTIPALDIHaas

Engineer: Ok Pietro, so very light on the brakes please, very light on the brakes, we just need to cool them down as much as we can Copy, copy So remember you need to stay positive on the delta time, positive on the delta time

  22. Pietro FITTIPALDIHaas

Pietro FITTIPALDI: Can I go back to pushing or roll down the brakes?

Engineer: Let's keep coasting to 11, please, and we'll review.

  23. Esteban OCONRenault

    Engineer: Any thoughts on balance?

Esteban OCON: It is still a bit loose, I would say, but it's used tyres.

Engineer: Copy. Russell, two and a half seconds behind you, time lap.

  24. Robert KUBICAAlfa Romeo

Robert KUBICA: I have D-rating before last corner and exit of the last corner.

Engineer: We need SOC 4, SOC 4.

  25. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: That's P3 Carlos, similar slow lap to last time, nice slow, slow lap.

  26. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: I'd oversteer into every single corner.

  27. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, I prefer to cool the tyres than keep temperature. I worry about the brakes a little more. Time for one more lap, yeah?

Engineer: Time for one more lap. For turn 11 and 14 try and release the brakes more to avoid pitching the car, more stability. Okay, next car is Verstappen on an out lap so you can manage the tyres through sector 3. Suggest a little bit of brake warm up before opening the lap, same as last time.

  28. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: Check on it on the next straight a bit of full throttle to charge

  29. Pietro FITTIPALDIHaas

Engineer: Okay Pietro, we need to drive around the box, we need to drive around the box So just follow the guy's instructions. Once you stop, we'll do a pre-start rev check, but just follow the guy's instructions driving around the box

  30. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: The last outlap we were probably a little bit lower on the fronts than we wanted. So far you're OK to let them cool.

  31. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: So we're happy with these tyre temps now to maintain these. The wind has picked back up to 10 kph, same direction, 10 kph wind.

  32. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Target 0-0, good work on the brakes, so as expected a couple of cars went out in front, Stroll, Russell, bid exit Ok, you will be close to the pit, Stroll, Russell, bid exit, 0-0

  33. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So currently a P6, Valtteri's lap time was a 39.6 on the hard tyre, he did have a mistake at turns 12 and 13.

  34. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

    Engineer: I

    Sergio PEREZ: have loose belts.

  35. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  36. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Mick SCHUMACHER: I have the thing from my glove that came off.

Engineer: Okay, we should box then and we'll hand it over to someone and then you'll go again. So we need to box if you have that thing loose in your cockpit. Okay, you're in sync with the cars behind.

  37. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos we see some loss of CLF in turn one exit looks similar in turn two and turn three. What do you think we should do? I think try and open L up suggest green shape two

  38. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, I suggest we box and we can prepare the car for high fuel. Lando opening a lap, 4 seconds.

Carlos SAINZ: What lap time did he do?

    Engineer: 39.3, 39.35, he's P11.

Carlos SAINZ: I don't know, I had so much honesty.

Engineer: Do you want to try one more lap with more flap angle or prepare the car for high fuel?

Carlos SAINZ: I think it's worth a try, just to see how the car feels.

    Engineer: Copy.

  39. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Engineer: Engine 9, position 1. Engine 9, position 1.

  40. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: What lap time did other people do in this compound?

Engineer: Stroll and Perez 38.8 Ocon 38.5 Raikkonen 39.2

  41. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Okay, so again, just think about working your fronts when you can.

  42. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: In this lap all the exits were very good. Except

Daniil KVYAT: turn 11 I think.

Engineer: Yeah, but 14 was good.

  43. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: How do your tyres feel Alex? Any vibration? No, all good.

  44. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: OK, so feedback on that first lap was all good until maybe we were braked a bit deep into turn 8. So just think about looking at the exit at turn 9. The compromise looked a bit too much towards 8.

  45. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: Check if we think a bit more management in turn two and three.

  46. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

    Alexander ALBON: Just massive torquals

Engineer: Okay, understood so recharge on and I think we'll go for another double cool this time Okay, so Hamilton. Looks like I go out the corners and it's stuck there. Hamilton on your tail three behind watch your mirrors now

  47. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Strat Mode 10, Strat Mode 10, this is for a different deployment schedule

  48. Esteban OCONRenault

Engineer: And Esteban, if the balance is significantly wrong in the first couple of laps, we'd be happy to do a pit stop to adjust.

    Esteban OCON: Yep, understood.

  49. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: so check we think we're quite fast we are fast you were nine tenths faster than Norris's first lap and your second and third lap were quicker than the two Mercedes on the hard

  50. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: So temperatures are coming down nicely now.

  51. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Daniil KVYAT: When I downshift to second between 5 and 6, there was a bit of grabbing, but just keep monitoring this in the next few laps.

Engineer: Copy. We need a multi B12 position 3. Multi B12 position 3.

  52. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And with this set of tyres we will stay out for the start on the grid.

  53. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: So Norris and Ocon are only on lap three of their run but currently they're a lot slower than you. Your last lap Mercedes was only two tenths quicker.

  54. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: and click the overtake now. Click overtake.

  55. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: OK, and let's think about our time management now, Max. Lift off.

  56. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: Check out we think the double lift is best

  57. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So in terms of pace, very similar to Valtteri, haven't got a target, not many other hard runners at the moment.

  58. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Ah, I went a bit wide last corner.

    Engineer: Copy.

  59. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Tell me every lap how many laps remaining, I want to drive things.

    Engineer: Copy.

  60. Esteban OCONRenault

Engineer: Just watch for rear snaps out of turn 7 and turn 9.

  61. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Are they degrading much?

Engineer: Lodeg on Perez, lap 8, 143.8. Lando lap 5, 144.8.

  62. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And five laps to go.

  63. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

Engineer: Ok Nicky, we're happy with what you're doing in time management, try a lift into 17 please, try a lift into 17.

  64. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: What's the limitation Danny? In

Daniil KVYAT: front overheating is lazy, not rotating. And traction Danny.

    Engineer: Copy that.

  65. Lance STROLLRacing Point

    Engineer: How's the balance, Lance?

    Lance STROLL: It's

    Engineer: a

Lance STROLL: bit on the under-zero side.

Engineer: Diff mid 4. Suggest diff mid 4.

  66. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Engineer: Get diff entry 4 for rotation. Diff entry 4. Now

Daniil KVYAT: the balance is opening way too much. Entry instability now everywhere and then rush out.

    Engineer: Copy.

  67. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: The active gear went off Multibee 8, gearbox 5, let's revert when you can, Multibee 8, gearbox 5

  68. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Engineer: Verstappen high fuel 1.4 behind. Try torque 9. Torque 9 when you can. More engine braking. Starting last timed lap. Last timed lap.

  69. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Ok, only place we can do a little bit better with the rear spin is between 8 and 9, the next corner, between 8 and 9 we can do a little bit more for the rear tyres.

Pierre GASLY: How is the pace?

Engineer: The pace is very good, Danny 44.8, your pace 44.1.

  70. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: OK and now cool the car please, cool the car and we are going round to the grid.

  71. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: OK, still feels like, I don't know if it's crazy, but you know what the left hand is, we have so much on the steer

    Engineer: OK, understood

  72. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Okay so you will be the first car that gets around to the grid. Switches are good. We would like one burnout using the overtake button please. Click the overtake and one burnout and then we want to be on the left-hand side as far forward as you can please. Left-hand side as far forward as you can.

  73. Pietro FITTIPALDIHaas

Pietro FITTIPALDI: Copy, should I go to mode slow now?

Engineer: Yep, you can go to mode slow now, yep. And just remember, you can't leave the grid box until the grid space in front of you is clear. And go as far as you can. Yeah, I got you. Cool.

    Pietro FITTIPALDI: Okay.

Engineer: So, from the left hand side, left hand side.

    Pietro FITTIPALDI: Left hand, okay.

  74. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Engineer: Okay, good job, Mick. Good start. You can go to Mode Slow, Mode Slow, and then we'll do CSL 5, 5th gear.

  75. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Engineer: Box now Mick box now practice pit stop hold brake pressure hold brake pressure in the stop

  76. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: That was a nice attack of the box there Lance, that was a good entry into the box

  77. Mick SCHUMACHERHaas

Engineer: Good job mate, good first FP1
