Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2020: Practice 2 team radio
66 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2020, across 19 drivers. 65 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Esteban OCON had the most, with 11.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Every message, in the order it happened
Engineer: I'm just putting you out in this queue so we don't lose any running time here. It's green now anyway, so watch the cars there.
Engineer: And if we could just work on the brakes a little bit, the brakes are pretty cool so we can do some good stops into 8 and into 11
Pietro FITTIPALDI: Yeah, there's a bit of pulling to
Engineer: the left. Okay, I think that's with them being cold So let's just try and build those brake temps up Everybody on tracks in sync around you
Pierre GASLY: The Williams photographer is taking a lot of pictures from the car.
Engineer: We'll have a new one next year, don't worry, they won't have time to do that.
Engineer: Wind looks a bit calmer. Albon now plus 17.
Lance STROLL: I don't understand what he's doing.
Engineer: I'll get that.
Engineer: Only loss compared to Kimi is turn 1 exit and breaking last corner. Shape 2, push to Golan, charge off before last corner, Leclerc pushing, not far behind, don't drop.
Engineer: OK, this box-box will go for steering wheel hot-swap.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, okay. Yeah, a little, I'll say a little sharp on some entries, but some understeer in the rotation.
Engineer: Okay, understood.
Engineer: Carlos do you want to keep doing push-cool-push or switch to continuous laps? Happy to do push-cool-push if you're still learning.
Valtteri BOTTAS: Yeah, you know, there's the end stop on the throttle pedal, when I push it harder against the end stop, it still keeps going, it's
Engineer: not normal. We'll have a look into that.
Esteban OCON: On this last braking, the car was doing left to right on braking.
Engineer: Copy. It's a front brake temperature problem after the slow lap.
Antonio GIOVINAZZI: Yeah, I'm struggling with the brake. Turn 1 is so easy to lock up and go with the front.
Engineer: Copy.
Esteban OCON: The car is still doing the same movement on braking.
Engineer: Copy. We still have a front brake temperature offset.
Engineer: We only need to do a pushing in lap and then bail but we can complete the lap if you want to practice it
Engineer: Alright, so we suggest brake balance offset, one-click roads please, one-click roads to zero.
Pietro FITTIPALDI: God damn, I don't know what happened. It's completely locked up.
Engineer: I just break and completely just locked both Yeah, we're looking at it. There could be some touch now come back
Audio only, no transcript available for this message.
Engineer: OK Alex, so just for your reference, that last lap was too wide at exit turn 21, so we lost that lap, exit turn 21.
Alexander ALBON: What's the pace like?
Engineer: Pace is reasonable, first lap was a 37.0, which puts you P3, obviously that time is not on the times on the board, but it was a 37.0 was your pace. Mercedes are 36.3, 36.4, Perez just done a lap, he's half a second slower than you, pace is reasonable.
Engineer: Recharge on, brake balance 4% forwards to keep those front brake temperatures up please on the recharge lap.
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, quite a little take there for that one time left.
Engineer: Is the car pulling straight now? Is the car straight when you brake?
Esteban OCON: Yep.
Engineer: Okay, thank you.
Sebastian VETTEL: Locked up into one. No, it's okay. Okay, copy.
Max VERSTAPPEN: I have quite a lot of battery left and the light.
Lando NORRIS: OK,
Engineer: we can stay out if there's more to learn, happy to stay out if there's more to learn. Understood. Stop on the marks please.
Engineer: I
Daniil KVYAT: got a bit more overall grip this lap for some reason, I don't know why, but a little bit more confidence still on the edge with the rear everywhere, but just able to carry more speed. Also rotation was slightly better.
Engineer: so that lap time was deleted for track limits final corner
Engineer: OK, recharge on, please recharge on, and
Alexander ALBON: we'll go for a
Engineer: double
Alexander ALBON: cool this
Engineer: time, BVL 6 please, BVL 6. Did the tyres improve through the lap, question?
Alexander ALBON: Well, a little bit, it felt the best through kind of middle to end of sector 2 on the rear tyres, but then I guess had a lot of understeer, I think we could go up two clicks easily. OK, understood.
Alexander ALBON: Can we do anything for turn 1 in gear 5? It's still really slow out the corner.
Engineer: OK, we'll have a look, then we'll continue now for a second call.
Engineer: OK, Coles, tricky with traffic, sector 3.
Carlos SAINZ: Tricky everywhere, to be honest.
Carlos SAINZ: Wow, we picked up front. Carlos, do you want one more lap or happy to box? Happy to box, but I don't understand.
Engineer: Then in sync with cars around
Pietro FITTIPALDI: Copy, that was a f***ing hit lap, sorry, just f***ing
Engineer: front temps running up in turn 1 Not your fault mate, that was pretty good with what you have with the temps we think
Engineer: Ok,
Lando NORRIS: first car back is Vettel. Why did you come on the radio into turn 11? Sorry, say again? Oh you didn't. Did you come on the radio into turn 11 because the radio opened?
Engineer: Not that I'm aware of, I'll look into it now. So Vettel is 12 back.
Charles LECLERC: The tires cooled down quite a bit in the last sector, I did not expect it.
Engineer: I don't know, we did some messy f**k up with the tires, it was really bad Copy Danny, double cool down, there is nobody pushing behind Man the tires are too cold Copy, single cool down
Engineer: Yeah, copy that, definitely a one lap time. I'd
Lewis HAMILTON: rather just find it the same, why not?
Engineer: We're seeing a scatter of lap time deltas between the medium and the soft.
Engineer: Do you want to do another lap or can we box, just so we get a longer long run if we could box now, that's all? No, I want another lap. Yep, no worries.
Engineer: So just try cooling the tires, try cooling the tires and we'll see if we get anything back. If we don't we'll pit early.
Engineer: It'll be recharge off
Esteban OCON: We're not doing double.
Engineer: Oh, yeah, sorry. Sorry. You are you're absolutely right. You're absolutely right double cool down. All right apologies
Max VERSTAPPEN: I'm behind Alex now, I
Engineer: don't f***ing
Max VERSTAPPEN: care
Engineer: You will catch him in sector 3, recharge off and be valve 3 please I
Max VERSTAPPEN: will catch him You
Engineer: will catch him yeah
Max VERSTAPPEN: I'm f***ing unboxing
Engineer: Stay out please Max But the peak of the tower is gone anyway Alex behind you on a time-lapse, stay out, Alex behind you on a time-lapse, 3 seconds
Engineer: And can we have an aero P4 5th gear cruise at the exit of turn 7?
Engineer: Okay, so we'll get 17 laps on this tyre and we need to look after the tyres a bit more at the beginning of the stint.
Esteban OCON: So the DRS, when I go out of the pits, it doesn't work on the first straight for some reason.
Engineer: I guess, man, I think we know what the problem is. It'll be fixed tomorrow. It's an issue with the car. You sound different, Mark, there. OK. Do I sound different now?
Esteban OCON: All OK, but just a bit crackly.
Engineer: Carlos looks a bit too much saving in turn two. Turn two is not the most damaging place for the tyre and you're giving up quite a lot of time.
Engineer: and Danny 5 kph tire management two and three
George RUSSELL: They're incredibly off-putting these shifts.
Engineer: Okay, we have a problem with the K we need to back off back off got a problem with the PU
Engineer: OK dude, let's not use DRS, no DRS and OK to push into braking, we don't need any lifting at the minute.
Pietro FITTIPALDI: Copy.
Engineer: What
Kimi RAIKKONEN: happened? I was proud of the small king.
Engineer: And three rim feathers a car on fire out of turn seven
Engineer: You have a big fire and get the hell out of here quick
Engineer: Red flag, red flag, stop down. OK, stop.
Engineer: Red flag, red flag. There might be some more oil down.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, I can smell it.
George RUSSELL: It's
Engineer: a
George RUSSELL: bit smoky
Engineer: First oil reported turn seven and seven and down to eight so turn seven down to eight
Lewis HAMILTON: Can't get in gear.
Engineer: I've
Lewis HAMILTON: got no gears.
Engineer: So switch off. So switch here off. We'll come get you.
Lewis HAMILTON: Should I try restarting that?
Engineer: So Nathan will try and start it on the K, so let's go, so MGU-K start
Engineer: I had to snap the brakes, it's really crushed. Yeah, understood, that looked dangerous.
Engineer: Is
Valtteri BOTTAS: there any traffic window behind? Oh,
Engineer: negative.
Engineer: Keep pushing to take the flag and do one more lap.
Daniil KVYAT: It's not the last lap now.
Engineer: Should be one more, keep pushing.
Engineer: OK, and if we can, start lifting off please to cool the car from turn 8 onwards
Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, proper lift yeah?
Engineer: Yes please
Engineer: OK Esteban, I'm afraid we're going to have to start cooling the car after turn 8, need to start cooling the car after turn 8, same for Daniel ahead of you.
Esteban OCON: Copy.
Engineer: Just be careful with Albon, three and a half seconds behind you, he's going to still be pushing. So cooling the car please, cooling the car, keep out of Daniel's wake, pull to one side.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Jonathan, did you see that? I gave you a friendly wave during the start.
Esteban OCON: How was our pace there?
Engineer: Our pace looked pretty reasonable to be on assessment, obviously Daniel on the medium tyre ahead of you, obviously a bit quicker but I think, let's just look, ah, ok, Perez 42.4, 42.3, Sainz 42.4 actually, yeah so it wasn't that great actually, sorry
Esteban OCON: Ok, on the hard that was?
Engineer: Yep
Engineer: Okay, keep pushing on the in-lap, keep pushing on the in-lap, launch was 32, initial drop.
Pietro FITTIPALDI: These marshals got to stop running in front of the pit lane keep doing it
Engineer: Copy we can pass on
