Mexico City Grand Prix 2021: Practice 1 team radio
49 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Mexico City Grand Prix 2021, across 17 drivers. 48 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Sergio PEREZ had the most, with 7.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Engineer: And we can go when you're ready
Antonio GIOVINAZZI: I have issue with the engine
Engineer: Checking
Antonio GIOVINAZZI: Yeah because the turbo Copy
Charles LECLERC: There's so much dust.
Engineer: OK man, so we go spark 3, spark 3 and OK for full throttle, in sync with all the cars around and just a radio check into turn 4.
Nikita MAZEPIN: Yeah, all good, so much dust on track, crazy.
Engineer: Copy that.
Engineer: Mazepin of six seconds
Fernando ALONSO: Yeah, okay, seven. Frag is, yes, so dusty
Engineer: 10-9 Yeah, I think you've seen it on the camera
Engineer: Who
Fernando ALONSO: is the hero in front? Bottas or Hamilton? Hamilton.
Max VERSTAPPEN: And the braking is terrible in the first three corners.
Engineer: Copy.
Engineer: How was the second lap?
Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, front side getting better. Copy. But I still put rotation into the low speed.
George RUSSELL: The PPF didn't seem to work as normal.
Engineer: OK, we'll check it, so start in the pit lane.
Engineer: currently yellows at turn 16 Leclerc has got moving again
Charles LECLERC: Copy,
Engineer: we will check that.
Engineer: double yellow now at the last turn again is a different car so maybe it's slippery that
Engineer: And some apex speed to find at turn 12. I tried to brake a bit earlier.
Engineer: And recharge on is good.
Daniel RICCIARDO: OK. Yeah, so braking, I've adjusted balance a little, and I think that's better. So I'll get on top of that, anywhere else in particular.
Engineer: So, Daniel, main time loss is in the high speed, 8.9. Carrying minimum speed.
Daniel RICCIARDO: OK.
Sergio PEREZ: I hit the wall, box, box.
Engineer: Stay tuned.
Engineer: VSC ending. VSC ending.
Engineer: And track is clear, so I would suggest box to work on a car, but we can do another lap if you want. Yeah, we can see your front left tires quite damaged, so probably better to box.
Pierre GASLY: The rear is very loose, but yeah we can
Engineer: Ok copy, so it's currently P1, just in front of Bottas and Soft
Pierre GASLY: Copy What do you think about the offside, because I had the feeling a lot of real luck Reminder about the battery, or we won't be able to go again
Engineer: So
Lewis HAMILTON: down there
George RUSSELL: Yeah, the rear feels very very strange mechanically.
Engineer: I'd
George RUSSELL: like to think it's just due to the low grip
Engineer: And with reminder to recharge on the line.
Engineer: I've got track slippery at turn 16, we haven't had any visuals on it. Vettel's slow opening a lap at the moment at turn 16. OK track is clear and no threats behind. Recharge off.
Sebastian VETTEL: Okay, the
Engineer: marker was for book down on drivability. Copy that. From seven to ten. Yeah, copy. The tie times do look good.
Engineer: OK Lance, main differences to Sebastian are braking for Turn 1 and 4, so we've got margin to brake later in Turn 1 and 4 if we can. Let's prioritise that for this lap.
George RUSSELL: The drive out of turn 6 feels poor from the PU side
Engineer: Copy that, understood, we'll feed in Stopping the rops, just following the guys
Engineer: How was the balance on that first lap?
Nikita MAZEPIN: I'm quite twitchy on entries, into like 1 and 4, and then high speed sort of, yeah, neutral at the moment.
Engineer: Understood, understood. So let's get a plus 30 second back-off, plus 30 second back-off.
Engineer: Ayuki, high speed looked better, this lap, turn 10 exit as well.
Yuki TSUNODA: I still was saving quite a lot, so I can go much more faster than that one. Understood.
Engineer: So what I'd like to do is open the lap to practice towing with Daniel.
Lando NORRIS: I want to do my lap on my own. I don't want to do the towing.
Lance STROLL: Oh man, there's just a lot of understeer.
Engineer: Russell pushing 4 behind, Russell 3 behind pushing, Russell 3 behind pushing, do you want a box for a flap adjust?
Lance STROLL: No, because the tyres are going to give up.
Engineer: OK, let's do the cool lap then, let's do the cool lap.
Engineer: So we could either do a flap adjust or you could consider torque 7 if understeer is your biggest problem? Obviously second lap on the tyres might go that direction.
Sebastian VETTEL: Yeah, I'm happy to stay, see how it goes.
Engineer: So I'd definitely think a double cool.
Sebastian VETTEL: OK, copy.
Engineer: OK, Daniel, recharge on is good, that's good, last sector.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Do we have time to try one more? There is time to try one more if you want it.
Engineer: Okay, 18.4, currently puts you P1. As I say, Bottas 18.8 in P2, but I think he had quite a decent toe down to turn one. That's the gap, basically, between Bottas and Hamilton. Hamilton just under a 19.0.
Engineer: Do you want to flap adjust?
Lance STROLL: No
Sergio PEREZ: What is he doing?
Engineer: Yeah sorry he's high fuel
Engineer: Phase 3 entry speed to improve in 12, compare the others on the first time map.
Engineer: Copy we've seen that
Sergio PEREZ: So, 1
Engineer: .5 temps off max in sector 1, Bottas 3.5 temps faster in sector 1, might be a bit of power unit there, 3.5 temps off max in sector 2, and 2 temps off max in sector 3.
Sergio PEREZ: I've been struggling to get the rear cooler.
Engineer: Copy. Do what we can. We'll see where we're at at the end of this lap.
Engineer: OK man, so let's do 50m lifts into turn 1, turn 4 and turn 12. 50m into 1, 4 and 12.
Charles LECLERC: That's
Engineer: what
Charles LECLERC: I thought. On. Yeah.
Engineer: Did
Charles LECLERC: quite a big mistake. Big mistake. But it's okay. I'll hold you in a bit longer.
Engineer: Copy.
Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, entry stability is on the poor side into the second sector. I struggled with front locking all the way to four, but then I struggled with entry stability the rest of the lap.
Engineer: And Daniel Klutt's drop was good and we'll stick with two burnouts for the next launch.
Sergio PEREZ: And we were the losses to Max on the lap.
Engineer: Losses to Max, turn 13 Apex, turn 13 Apex.
Engineer: OK, let's do 50 metres each, lift and coast in turn 4 and 12. So 50 metres each in turn 4 and 12, lift and coast.
George RUSSELL: Pace.
Engineer: Yeah we're happy with this pace, this pace is good, just a little bit of time to find in Turn 1, that's the only place so just think about Turn 1.
Engineer: Launch map, launch map, launch map. This is down two and a half holes.
Engineer: Just keep some temperature in the tyres, might be useful for you to have a look at the pit lane entry.
Antonio GIOVINAZZI: When I need to jump out I have something on my eyes since lap 1 here.
Engineer: Ok, copy. I get your comments afterwards.
