São Paulo Grand Prix 2024: Qualifying team radio

114 radio messages were recorded during qualifying at the São Paulo Grand Prix 2024, across 20 drivers. 110 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. George RUSSELL had the most, with 18.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: And reported from the safety car is turn 3 turn 5 where there is the most water

  2. Pierre GASLYAlpine

    Pierre GASLY: What's the

Engineer: What's the rain situation any more rain or to be so rains fairly constant

  3. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Some other teams reporting heavier rain in a few minutes

  4. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Oscar, the C111 you put in does the LED brightness. If you want the dash less bright, that would be C110.

  5. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Engineer: So DRS is disabled for the whole of Q1

  6. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: Yeah, and I guess keep me updated with others stopping as well. Very much. 10 seconds to green.

  7. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: the end of the lap. Okay so we've got a green light so let's try and learn the gears up to four and we will need recharge back on at six and then we can go off again at the end of the lap.

  8. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Just keep an eye on our ones on board to see water levels

  9. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: So it looks like a bit of a river coming off turn five.

  10. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: House cars just go in the line.

Engineer: They're cut in. I saw that, thank you.

  11. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: so yellow return 12 is cleared we think it's a river that put him off

  12. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Engineer: Turn 14 is the only place we see aquaplaning.

  13. Franco COLAPINTOWilliams

Franco COLAPINTO: My gears are super aggressive

Engineer: Yes, we're just learning the gears

  14. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: I'm on ice here.

  15. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: Yeah, I'm gonna have to make a gap to Russell now because he started literally right in front of me. 11-2 Alonso behind. 11-2 Alonso behind.

  16. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Cries at the hub

  17. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: It's getting drier and drier, and the tires have moved.

Engineer: Yeah, we saw the issue at turn 12.

  18. Oliver BEARMANHaas

Oliver BEARMAN: The wet is terrible. The problem is it's overheating. I know it doesn't look like it, but it's overheating.

  19. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: Hey Lance, we can look at a wider line in six you're tighter than most people in six We're going to fit the other set of wets and go back out your p6 for now. It's going to be a quick turn around

  20. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Engineer: Okay, Nico, so obviously the rain's increased. It's three minutes till the session restarts, but yeah, just be ready here.

  21. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Could be that with this forecast the least wet conditions are towards the end. I think that you could do four pushing maybe five

  22. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: So currently expecting to get five push laps.

  23. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: So Liam, no need to take any risk to start the session and we try to maximise towards the end.

  24. Yuki TSUNODARB

Engineer: Yuki, we are in a good position so let's take a calculated risk.

  25. Oliver BEARMANHaas

Engineer: If we refit ints, we need a different set. Yeah, no worries. Yeah, we'll do that.

  26. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: It's raining a lot less.

  27. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Lando happy to go straight into another lap. Time for four more push-ups.

  28. Esteban OCONAlpine

Esteban OCON: I can't see now, through

Engineer: the gap Big gap behind Perez, behind

  29. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And try and cool the tyres a bit more. You've got Hulkenberg to six seconds, Verstappen four behind him, Lawson four behind him.

  30. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: I need a gap and a front locking, please.

  31. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Still p2, but they will start so let's try and put two two more laps

  32. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: I don't have any good references here. Update me more on lap times, otherwise I'm gonna push.

  33. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Engineer: it's currently still p7 okay

Fernando ALONSO: i mean i don't know why we slow down in the previous slot i mean i'm minus six tenths

  34. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

ZHOU Guanyu: I was completely sucked in the half. Completely.

  35. Oliver BEARMANHaas

Engineer: For what it's worth, Oli, Hamilton, Colapinto and Nico are also out of the session.

  36. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: I think it's now, push cool, push cool, but up to you.

  37. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: No one on inter yet?

    Engineer: Everyone on extremes.

  38. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Lando, the braking for Turn 1 is very similar to the dry line, so you need to brake on the outside and then come in tight into the apex of Turn 1 to open Turn 2.

  39. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Engineer: So these tyres might be a little bit cool just to start the lap, but then should be better in the middle sector.

  40. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: So prepare for increased overheating through the lap this time.

  41. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: So lap times look to be bottom end of wet, close to inter-crossover, Leclerc 6.

  42. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: Very good middle sector, Liam. We can do one more lap with higher temperatures. We can do one more lap. We keep an eye on inters.

  43. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: So, inter-tire looks quicker now, so we'll box.

  44. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: Two sets of inters as well. Yeah, we'll be ready.

  45. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Max keep up the pace

  46. Carlos SAINZFerrari

    Engineer: 5 time-lapse, potentially 5 time-lapse

  47. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: In turn four, brake on the dry line now. Three cars behind you are all on outlaps. First car on a timelap is Tsunoda, turn to seven exit.

  48. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: It's going to be in time. The use on the new. Yeah, but the use on the new. Oh, new, new, new, new.

  49. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: Rain might pick up in about five minutes time

  50. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Engineer: If you've got room you can use energy on the outlamp just for a bit more tempo.

  51. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Cars have been told to push the outlap, honestly.

  52. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Still pretty much no rain here.

  53. Esteban OCONAlpine

    Engineer: Okay.

  54. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: That's a good gap now

  55. Valtteri BOTTASKick Sauber

Engineer: And Valtteri, consider sacrificing turn one for a better two and three.

  56. Valtteri BOTTASKick Sauber

Engineer: And Valtteri, consider sacrificing turn one for a better two and three.

  57. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Valtteri and Alonso on top for each other.

Engineer: Valtteri's three and a half behind Alonso.

  58. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: So Max use this to build tyre temperature and then we need a good gap for the remaining two laps

  59. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: P.U.'s Paul with wastegate

  60. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: No waste gate hour four if we can do it.

  61. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: Come on, guys. We got to do a better program. We just went there at the end. What was the point to go there at the end, be the last car?

  62. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: Unfortunately, with where we are in the pit lane, the

Sergio PEREZ: whole pit... That's not an excuse, mate. No, no, no, no. We should have waited. If everyone is waiting already at the end of the pit lane, why we go?

  63. Valtteri BOTTASKick Sauber

Engineer: Yeah, sorry to sorry to tell you but p11 p11

Valtteri BOTTAS: Well good job anyway good timings

  64. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Oscar PIASTRI: I think if it keeps raining like this, we should just stay out.

    Engineer: Copy.

  65. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: So we expect class run one rain for the next six minutes, Oscar.

  66. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: So, Lando, just a bit of update then on run plans. On one tyre, clearly at the moment, happy to do consecutive until it gets too hot. If you wanted a pit stop, it's something like a three plus two.

  67. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: OK, suggest the best weather is the next three or four minutes, Oscar, three or four minutes. Low confidence. What happens after that?

  68. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: Every lap count so that's two push in a row, two push in a row.

  69. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Wind new set, lower pressure.

  70. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: If there's anything we can do for a front tire tap, we must take it.

  71. Liam LAWSONRB

Liam LAWSON: What will the plan be now?

  72. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: Still forecast to get four laps

  73. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: Wind still looks very very low in strength

  74. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: A bit drier than before.

  75. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: We still have time for three laps after this. Gap to Leclerc, 8.

  76. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: The brakes are in a bad place at the moment and low pressure low pressure they're grabbing a lot you

    Engineer: get one

  77. Lando NORRISMcLaren

  80. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: So, Oscar, Class 1 rain in Pit Lane at the moment. We're not expecting that to get a lot heavier.

  81. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: You have 10 seconds margin to get two push laps.

  82. George RUSSELLMercedes

    George RUSSELL: I'm

    Engineer: going

George RUSSELL: to be on top of Norris and Leclerc, am I not?

  83. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: Tyres are looking in a very good place. You've done a very good job of this.

  84. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: They're all over the place, mate. Understood. Do what you can.

  85. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Cars are improving, Austria cars are improving. You're still P3 now, I will let you know.

  86. Esteban OCONAlpine

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  87. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: All right, Liam, P5 on the Yuki P3.

  88. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: Just a couple of 10 sites.

Liam LAWSON: Yeah, copy. I, uh, man, I nearly lost the cow to turn 4. Good job, guys. Really good job. Sorry about that.

  89. Lando NORRISMcLaren

    Engineer: Thoughts on the track?

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, a bit of aquaplaning down to turn 4, otherwise not too bad, just low grip.

  90. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: There doesn't seem to be that much standing water, so think about enters.

  91. Franco COLAPINTOWilliams

    Franco COLAPINTO: Sorry, mate.

  92. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And track is still fast people matching their lap times and we will get faster

  93. Lando NORRISMcLaren

    Engineer: And we are through.

  94. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Okay, that was P1 at the end.

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Lovely.

  95. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: The car was out of drive.

  96. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: So, Oscar, there's now light drops in pit lane. We think the rain may pick up in four minutes or so.

  97. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: There could be an increase in rain in about 15 minutes or so.

  98. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: What's the time left on the clock?

    Engineer: 45 seconds

Sergio PEREZ: Come on guys, we gotta do a better program Unfortunately with where we are at the pit lane That's not an excuse mate. No, no, no. We should have waited. If everyone is waiting already at the end of the pit lane, why we go?

  99. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: So, Landon, we think the best conditions should be within these first five minutes. We think there's more rain behind that.

  100. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

    Engineer: You okay, mate?

    Fernando ALONSO: Yeah, sorry.

  101. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, it's a lot more rain. This

Engineer: heavier rain is expected to last for two more minutes and then it will reduce back to Class 1 or Class 2.

  102. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: They always put me in

    Engineer: the

    George RUSSELL: bull

  103. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

    Nico HULKENBERG: Ah

  104. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Lewis HAMILTON: Damn car, man.

  105. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Lewis HAMILTON: Why?

Engineer: Yeah, we just didn't get through it.

  106. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: So the rain does look like it's eased off now, so potentially the best conditions will be now at the start.

  107. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: We think there'll be some class one raining starting imminently, which will last to the end of the session.

  108. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Carlos SAINZ: Oh my gosh, sorry guys

  109. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: We should have stayed in the garage, we are more or less the last guard.

Engineer: It's going to improve through the session here.

  110. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Oscar PIASTRI: I think if it keeps raining like this, we should just stay out.

    Engineer: Copy.

  111. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: Did the brakes fail?

Engineer: We're checking. Oh Alex, are you okay?

    Alexander ALBON: Yeah.

Engineer: We're checking on the brakes. So from our side, brakes look okay. You can still hear me.

  112. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Lando, difficult message for me to pass. If the conditions are slower, just be sensible. Obviously, the race is in a few hours.

  113. George RUSSELLMercedes

    George RUSSELL: Where are we?

Engineer: Nice job. Nice job. P2. Ah,

George RUSSELL: so close. Well done guys.

Engineer: Good session. Very difficult session. Great job in that session. That was really tough.

  114. Liam LAWSONRB

Engineer: Alright Liam, P5 on the Yuki P3, just a couple of 10sides.

Liam LAWSON: Yeah, copy, I nearly lost the car at turn 4. Good job guys, really good job, sorry about that.
