Spanish Grand Prix 2024: Practice 3 team radio

54 radio messages were recorded during practice 3 at the Spanish Grand Prix 2024, across 19 drivers. Lewis HAMILTON had the most, with 8.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: And circuit's all clear.

  2. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Ok, so we'll go for the double call, you're only car on track, so all clear.

  3. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So as compared to yesterday, only loss looks turn four, looks two or three tenths there, but good gain at turn five. Everything else is probably within the noise in terms of track evo.

  4. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: 10-4EZ, two or three tenths

Engineer: Yeah, we're just looking at the offload, the telemetry overlay, we're just going off GPS, but we'll get you an updated number You don't need to drive through, right? You don't need to drive through, but we're here if you need us

  5. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Yeah, so looking at the... Go ahead.

Lewis HAMILTON: I was going to say, what target turn should I do?

Engineer: As you were previous lap, so they were good.

Lewis HAMILTON: No, but the second one I mean.

Engineer: Yes, 75 front and 74 rear is the target. And looking at the telemetry data, it looks like it's more the loss at turn 5 entry, so peak braking and mid-speed.

  6. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: OK, double slow please Max. Let's see if you'd like to assess another step on the more aggressive tools.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, let's try it.

Engineer: Understood. So, V-BAL 6 and the same toggle schedule, V-BAL 6, double slow. Would you like a front flap adjustment?

    Max VERSTAPPEN: No, that's good.

Engineer: OK, understood. All cars behind on outlaps.

  7. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: So procedure is good Lance, it'll be a live stop onto a medium, we'll do the same again.

  8. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: The ballast is not in the right place.

    Engineer: Understood.

  9. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Lance STROLL: Can you get me a knee pad prepared for the next run, I have some knee pain. Yeah, copy that Lance, we'll prepare that as understood.

  10. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, very poor drivability, getting back on throttle out of 4. OK,

Engineer: from our side, turn 4, drivability looks good, just a bit overambitious late entry speed.

Sergio PEREZ: It was on throttle, it was on throttle, picking up the throttle.

  11. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

    Engineer: Feedback when you're ready.

Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, very poor drivability. Getting back on throttle out of 4. Quite poor.

Engineer: OK, from our side, turn 4, drivability looks good. Just a bit overambitious late entry speed.

  12. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Can we just get a bit of foam for a bit of knee padding, please?

    Engineer: Yeah, I can.

  13. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

    Engineer: I

Nico HULKENBERG: think we need double cools, don't really come down much yet.

    Engineer: Okay, no problem.

Nico HULKENBERG: It's much less gusty and windy than yesterday, right?

Engineer: Yes, same direction but much less magnitude.

  14. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: V-charge on and we'll box at the end of this lap.

Sergio PEREZ: Yep, getting back on throttle and high speed support was quite a bit worse this lap around.

  15. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Good job on the cow. It's a quick step forward.

    Engineer: Happy to hear that.

  16. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Oscar, thoughts on front wing? I

Oscar PIASTRI: think probably need to go up a little bit. Turn 9 and the last corner felt pretty understeery.

Engineer: Copy. So let's come through the pits, we'll box this lap. How much would you like to add? Watch for Magnussen, sorry late call.

Oscar PIASTRI: Probably one, one and a half.

    Engineer: Copy.

  17. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Nico HULKENBERG: I don't know, it's not happening. The 1 feels very rear limited, like too much aero balance, but afterwards not so bad.

Engineer: There's definitely wind from outside in 3 which isn't helping through there, and obviously 2 is oversteer which hurts the rear. Maybe it's just the grip of this tire.

  18. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Yeah, Ken, seeing that the rear's going a bit, suggest increasing management at turn 9 a little bit to try and help it.

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Yeah, I'm also just getting traffic all the time. Sure,

    Engineer: understood.

  19. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: What do you think about flap?

Alexander ALBON: It's good. I don't really know where to go with balance. I think engine through two and three is good as well. I don't need a change there.

    Engineer: Okay, copy that.

  20. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: Yeah, double call. The traction out of two is...

Engineer: Hamilton fast behind now, one, that's okay. And then Albon is two behind. Then you've got a bit of a gap. Okay, so everyone behind now is slow. Yeah, there is tailwind as

Fernando ALONSO: you come through. Yeah, yeah, for everybody.

Engineer: So we do think that double call is the right thing as well. So nice and slow now.

  21. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: The leg pattern's loose, front left.

    Engineer: Copy.

  22. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Lance STROLL: Some of the tyres were just gone after one push.

Engineer: Yeah, it looks very extreme, a lot of people aren't improving actually.

  23. Esteban OCONAlpine

    Engineer: Yeah, warm all up.

Esteban OCON: Yeah, clipping last corner was pretty big actually.

    Engineer: Understood.

  24. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

ZHOU Guanyu: I would not do another one, because it's just getting worse and worse grip.

Engineer: Copy Joe, we'll go just for the layer rubber.

  25. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: Back out the flap, or we've got Woody's diff test.

Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, what about the, we try the alternative, front wing?

Engineer: Negative, and not available at this stage.

  26. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: OK STM, brake temps all under control, thank you for that, we are driving through to the end of the pit lane, we'd like one burnout and a start please. So driving straight through, one burnout and a start.

  27. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: And we'll go recharge on. Recharge on and we'll box this lap.

Pierre GASLY: OK, they don't like it.

Engineer: OK, we can revert on that, no problem. We'd like to come into the pit lane and we'll do a start from the box. So no need for an aero cruise this one, so box this lap.

  28. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: How was the target?

Engineer: You were baseline minus one.

    Yuki TSUNODA: Don't

    Engineer: know

Yuki TSUNODA: why I have so much will spin.

    Engineer: Understood.

  29. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Oscar, the other car bought into Turn 7. They got caught out by a gust of tailwind into Turn 7.

  30. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Is Piastro on his first slow, or second?

Engineer: It's a bit strange, he's done an out lap and he's going slowly on his first time lap, so I'm guessing he's going to go for it on the next lap.

  31. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Engineer: Ok, we do a drive through the pit lane, do you need a flap adjust?

    Logan SARGEANT: Negative

    Engineer: Ok, copy that

  32. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Lando, even if the next lap is poor, it'd be really good to come around the final corner.

    Lando NORRIS: Yeah, understood.

  33. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: So comparing the two, Nico carried, braked a little bit later, gained a tenth under braking for turn one, and he carried a bit more apex speed through turn ten. That's the places you lost out to.

  34. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Yeah, maybe some gravel down exit turn two. Sorry, turn 12. A few cars have gone over it already.

  35. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Okay, track is showing slippery, turn 12 exit, that could be gravel.

  36. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Engineer: Just have a look there's a slippery track exit of 12 possibly a little bit of gravel on the exit curve of 12 So have a look now as you come through Few cars have already been through that Slargent is going too slow. Slargent will be going into a slow. Yeah

  37. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: and biggest loss turn 10 is worth a couple of tenths turn 12 another tenth strong start to the lap

  38. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Lewis HAMILTON: All right, that's

    Engineer: the

    Lewis HAMILTON: end. My bad.

  39. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Lance STROLL: Yeah, I think he's alone on the track.

  40. Yuki TSUNODARB

Engineer: And target is blue 3, before turn 10, nobody behind

Yuki TSUNODA: Remind me, or feedback Yeah

  41. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: And Daniel, turn 1, 2, 3, anything we need to look at there? We didn't see a jump.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, I was going to say, that was weird, I felt no difference, even with the other switches, I didn't gain anything.

Engineer: What do you mean, sorry, anything in terms of grip? Nope, no

Daniel RICCIARDO: I didn't feel any difference compared to the previous tyre, it only came later.

Engineer: Yeah, we think we had more headwind before turn 1, but what about car speed in GLS?

  42. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: And I think also last corner, I think battery was gone and I lost quite a lot. Two.

    Engineer: Yep.

    Yuki TSUNODA: One.

Engineer: Behind. Yeah, battery will... It was not good, so we'll have a fix for the next. Where I'm losing? Box, box, through the pit lane, through the pit lane to cool the tyre, through the pit lane and we go out again.

  43. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: Ok, no immediate threat, so balance feedback when you can. Yeah, one thing, I ran out of battery towards the end of the lap. Yeah,

    Engineer: we can clear your

Sergio PEREZ: balance feedback, we can take care of that. In terms of the balance, I was just... The rotation on the front end was getting better, together with the entry stability. I think I was missing a bit of entry stability. Do you need more low speed stability?

    Engineer: If

Sergio PEREZ: so, no problem. Yes.

  44. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: What's the point while we're doing one more push?

Engineer: Yu-Gi-Oh will stay out to do the start at the end So we can do one more. If you don't want to, we come through the pit lane, we do starts now.

    Yuki TSUNODA: I can try.

  45. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Engineer: Brake shape 0, we suggest, and open diff for 5, 7 and 10.

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, I don't agree, I'm certainly more with the rotations than the diff.

Engineer: Ok, you can use more of the track in exit turn 10.

  46. Charles LECLERCFerrari

    Engineer: Yes, we've seen it

  47. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, he just drove into me. I think I've got damage. Okay, understood.

  48. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: I think Lando may have some damage after some contact with Leclerc.

  49. Esteban OCONAlpine

Esteban OCON: Yeah copy, the stability in 3 and 1 and 7 is not the best also The understeer mid corner was better with the flap

Engineer: OK mate, I understand We'll have a good look through the data when we're in, decide where we go from here OK, well I managed that session, a few procedures and things to do as well, so quite a busy one, thank you for that So we're going to the grid and we'll do a start on the left hand side And we'll be pushing to pit entry once again I'll let you know about burnouts when we're there We'll be right back

  50. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: This could probably be the most relevant launch of the weekend, Max, so make use of it.

  51. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: I don't understand why they do that. I think he blocked that as well.

  52. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: you approach the back if we can have launch map on then it'll be one plus one burnout conservative left hand side that's one plus one conservative left hand side

Lando NORRIS: conservative or standard conservative please

  53. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Pierre GASLY: Copy. We've got to do something for these brakes because they are really bad.

    Engineer: OK, mate.

  54. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Alexander ALBON: You've got to be careful with the brakes, because I was abusing them a bit.

Engineer: Yeah, we should have guys there with fans. Temps are okay from outside.
