Spanish GP team radio: Norris says McLaren should have won
Norris said McLaren deserved to win "quite easily", Hamilton lost his brakes on lap 6, Russell asked why Mercedes were not trying to win, and Ferrari kept Leclerc out hoping something would happen. Every radio message from the first Madrid race.
"Very unlucky today guys, we deserved to win quite easily."
That is Lando Norris on his cool-down lap at the Madring, a few minutes after finishing third in the first Spanish Grand Prix held in Madrid. He started on pole and led the first 15 laps. Kimi Antonelli won.
The radio is where the rest of the race makes sense: a car without brakes on lap 6, a Mercedes driver arguing with his own strategy, Ferrari holding Leclerc out and waiting for luck, and Norris and Max Verstappen disagreeing about the rules to the last lap.
Twenty six messages came out of the race. Every one of them is in our
with the audio and a colour-coded transcript. Below they are in race order, placed on the lap they were sent, with the timing data alongside. The full result and how the race was won are in our
Norris converted pole and led every lap until the Virtual Safety Car on laps 14 and 15. Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell stopped straight away. Norris stopped a lap later, had a slow tyre change, and rejoined fifth. His three most revealing messages:
Lap 28, on George Russell's hybrid energy: "Russell's deployment is like a boost press into turn 5 every lap. I'll have to do something else." The archive labels this line as the engineer's, but the second sentence reads like the driver.
Lap 56, after a lap with Verstappen: "He went off defending against me, he cut a chicane... pretty obvious."
After the flag:"Let's take it on the chin... very unlucky today guys, we deserved to win quite easily."
The stewards looked at the lap 56 incident after the race, a Turn 5 case of Verstappen leaving the track and gaining an advantage, and took no further action. Norris stayed third, 0.738 seconds behind him. Every Norris message across the season is on his driver radio page.
Hamilton: "I don't have brakes, guys"
Lewis Hamilton started fourth. On lap 6 he was down in tenth and sent the shortest message of the race.
"I don't have brakes, guys." He retired at the end of that lap. Formula 1 reported brake problems that had worsened quickly, and Lance Stroll's Aston Martin later stopped at Turn 20 with brake trouble of its own, which brought out the Virtual Safety Car.
Verstappen was furious by lap 4
Max Verstappen ran second in the opening laps. On lap 4, after a message from his pit wall, he answered:
"What are you guys talking about? He put a shot in it to me... If I just stay on the track, we're out of the race." The stewards reviewed a Turn 1 incident in which Verstappen left the track, and took no further action.
He finished second. His engineer after the flag: "You extracted everything once again today, it was a strong fight. I know we are still missing a little bit." His full weekend is on his driver radio page.
Russell: "Why wouldn't you try and win?"
George Russell pitted under the Virtual Safety Car on lap 14 for mediums. Two laps after the restart he was fifth and asking questions.
"Why wouldn't you try and win?" The engineer answered with the plan. Russell's view was different: "I think Leclerc will make this to the end easy, with a one stop."
He was half right. Charles Leclerc did run a single stop, but Ferrari brought him in on lap 48. Russell stopped a second time on lap 28, and by lap 36 the argument was still going. His engineer closed it:
"Yeah, we can discuss the strategy later. So Norris currently at 37.1. Let's focus on that." Russell finished fifth, 0.713 seconds behind Leclerc, and set the fastest lap of the race, a 1:35.587 on lap 49, which is now the Madring's first race lap record.
Antonelli's engineer: the tyres "are bulletproof"
Antonelli took hard tyres under the Virtual Safety Car and ran them for the remaining 43 laps. On lap 18, sitting second behind Leclerc:
"Just make sure you stay on top of the management... they are bulletproof." The timing backs the engineer. Across laps 40 to 47 Antonelli averaged 1:37.673 on tyres more than 25 laps old, and after taking the lead he lapped at 1:36.661 to the flag.
On lap 25 came the other instruction every driver heard at this circuit:
"We have two track limits now... so no more track limits please, keep it clean." Turn 17 cost more deleted lap times than any other corner in Friday practice, and Turn 6 caught three drivers in qualifying, as our Madring circuit guide measured.
After the flag, his engineer: "Beautiful work Kimi, absolute masterpiece." It was Antonelli's eighth win of 2026.
Ferrari kept Leclerc out, "hoping something will happen"
Leclerc started fifth on hard tyres and inherited the lead when the leaders stopped. On lap 38 he asked what he was racing for.
"Give me a bit of updates on the race situation. What are we fighting for?" The engineer's answer set out the gamble: in a normal race to the end, a stop would put him fourth, 13 seconds behind Norris, and they were keeping a gap in case of a safety car.
Nine laps later it had not come:
"We are managing the gap to Russell as well, hoping something will happen." Leclerc asked whether they had lost the gap to Russell. "Negative, we are managing the gap." Ferrari pitted him at the end of that lap, and he finished fourth.
He had led 32 laps on one set of hards, and across laps 40 to 47 he was only about two tenths a lap slower than Antonelli on tyres that had done over 40 laps.
The rest of the race
Oscar Piastri, lap 27: "So are we fixing the front wing or not?" His engineer offered a trim change instead: "We can add three holes without the time loss of fixing it." He finished eighth.
Fernando Alonso, lap 13:"He squeezed me into the wall, man." Alonso finished 17th, two laps down. Later in the race the stewards gave Carlos Sainz a five-second penalty for a Turn 5 incident with Alonso.
Carlos Sainz, lap 38: "I had no other way to get out of the way in that sector." The archive labels this line as the engineer's, although it reads like Sainz. He retired five laps later.

Qualifying and practice radio
The race produced 26 messages, and the weekend 78 in total: 17 from qualifying, 6 from third practice, 18 from second practice and 11 from first practice.
Norris took pole by 0.011 seconds, and the radio caught the moment Antonelli was told the margin. That is in our Spanish GP qualifying report.
A note on the transcripts
Transcripts are generated automatically, so fast speech, engine noise and team code words sometimes come out garbled. Every quote above has been checked against the speaker labels, and where a label and the words disagree we have said so rather than picking one. Where a line was too garbled to quote safely, we have left it out of the text. The audio is always the final word, and it is one tap away on every message.
The Formula Dream app plays live driver radio as it is broadcast, with the transcript running beside the audio, alongside a live timing Dashboard (currently in beta) and every FIA document of the weekend, including the stewards' decisions on Verstappen and Sainz, the moment they are published. Azerbaijan is next, with the race on Saturday 26 September.
