Youngest F1 World Champions: Antonelli Breaks the Record | Formula Dream
The youngest F1 world champions: Antonelli at 20, and the ten who came closest
Kimi Antonelli clinched the 2026 title at 20 years and 68 days, more than three years younger than any champion before him. The ten youngest F1 world champions, with their age on the day they clinched it.
Kimi Antonelli became Formula 1 world champion at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November 2026, aged 20 years and 68 days. The record he took had stood for 16 years, and he beat it by more than three years.
Before Antonelli, no driver had won the title before turning 23. Sebastian Vettel held the record from 2010, at 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli clinched the title by finishing third in Mexico City with four races to spare, so he was not even waiting for the last round. The story of that afternoon, and the radio from it, is on our
Ages are measured on the day of the race that settled each title, which is how the record is normally counted.

Age on the day of the race that decided the title. Jim Clark, at 27 years and 188 days in 1963, is eleventh.
Six of the ten have come since 2005, and three of the last six titles have gone to drivers on this list. The gap at the top is the striking part: Vettel to Hamilton is 166 days, Alonso to Verstappen 15 days, but Antonelli to Vettel is more than three years.
How each of them did it
Kimi Antonelli, 2026. Third place in Mexico City put him out of reach with four rounds left. By then he had nine wins and 16 podiums from 19 races, and 380 points against Max Verstappen's 261. Mercedes kept him out on his first set of tyres until lap 43, and the radio stayed calm:
Sebastian Vettel, 2010. Vettel did not lead the championship at any point in 2010 until the chequered flag of the final race. He won in Abu Dhabi while Fernando Alonso, who arrived leading, finished seventh behind Vitaly Petrov's Renault.
Lewis Hamilton, 2008. The closest finish on this list. Hamilton needed fifth place at Interlagos, was sixth in the final laps, and passed Timo Glock's struggling Toyota at the last corner. He won by a single point from Felipe Massa, who had won the race.
Fernando Alonso, 2005. Alonso became the youngest champion of his time with third place in Brazil, two races before the end of the season, ending Michael Schumacher's run of five straight titles.
Max Verstappen, 2021. He went into the last race level on points with Hamilton and won the title on the final lap, after a safety car restart he took on fresh soft tyres. The 2021 Abu Dhabi weekend is one of the busiest in our archive: the race alone has 168 broadcast messages on the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix radio page.
Emerson Fittipaldi, 1972. He won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza with two races still to run, and held the youngest champion record for 33 years until Alonso took it.
Michael Schumacher, 1994. The first of his seven titles was decided in Adelaide, when he and Damon Hill collided and both retired. He won by one point.
Lando Norris, 2025. Third in Abu Dhabi was enough. Verstappen won the race, and Norris finished two points ahead of him and 13 ahead of his team mate Oscar Piastri.
Niki Lauda, 1975. Third place at Monza settled the title with a round to spare, Ferrari's first drivers' championship since 1964.
Jacques Villeneuve, 1997. Michael Schumacher turned into him at Jerez while defending the lead. Schumacher retired, Villeneuve finished third and won the title, and Schumacher was later disqualified from the championship.
Why Antonelli's record is different
Most of these titles came in a driver's fourth season or later. Vettel won his in his fourth season, Hamilton in his second, Alonso in his fourth, Verstappen in his seventh. Antonelli won his in his second season, after starting in Formula 1 at 18 in 2025.
It also came with more races to spare than any other title on the list. Only Fittipaldi, Alonso and Lauda settled their titles with races to spare, and none had four left as Antonelli did.
What these figures are
Ages are counted on the day of the race that decided the title, not on the last day of the season. For drivers who clinched at the final round the two are the same day. For Antonelli, Alonso, Fittipaldi and Lauda the title was decided earlier, which is why their ages here are lower than some season-end lists show.
Dates of birth and race dates are from each driver's and each race's published record, listed below.
