Monaco Grand Prix 2018: Practice 1 team radio

31 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Monaco Grand Prix 2018, across 11 drivers. Lance STROLL had the most, with 8.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: We have seen a refuse downshift in turn 6, and also you press the DRS by mistake. We need to be careful steering in turn 6.

  2. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So traffic is starting to build now. We've got Sainz behind. He is on an outlap, 12 seconds.

  3. Lance STROLLWilliams

Engineer: it's overheating the tire okay copy that so we can take the slow lap then so botas is 16 behind okay so we'll go around and take a full slow lap then try and maintain the front temperature and we can cool the rears

  4. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Engineer: Any idea what was happening on the start-finish line? We saw Stroll... Sorry, Sirotkin was slow there, but I don't know if it's debris.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, all I saw was a bit of debris.

Engineer: OK, so... Wasn't too bad. OK, track is now clear.

  5. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: We are happy with the tires, we are happy with the tires. How is the car, Brennan?

  6. Lance STROLLWilliams

Lance STROLL: I have way too much understay now. I think the fronts are grainy.

  7. Lance STROLLWilliams

Lance STROLL: Or should I just try one with diff mid on one?

Engineer: He's more in the entry. Is the car stable in entry?

    Lance STROLL: Yep.

  8. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: I have some overstay entry-exit low speed, but I do have some understeer mid-corner medium speed. My traction is quite poor. Copy that, copy that. Currently P4, currently P4.

  9. Carlos SAINZRenault

Engineer: Yeah, the balance is decent, it's just the car feels extremely stiff. Perez, behind you now, four seconds behind you, followed by Ocon.

  10. Carlos SAINZRenault

Engineer: Yeah, the car is extremely, extremely stiff on the right before the braking zone. So we're up in two seconds behind you.

  11. Stoffel VANDOORNEMcLaren

Stoffel VANDOORNE: How many laps do we have?

Engineer: Stoffel, there's time and fuel to do two, three, three more. Three more after this.

Stoffel VANDOORNE: Okay, I mean, the car is quite undriveable.

  12. Fernando ALONSOMcLaren

Fernando ALONSO: Pedal went wrong in 10.10, now it's back OK.

Engineer: If something does go wrong, it will be completely safe and it will go long just as you had it then. So it's just like normal, otherwise we're happy to continue. OK guys, for now I'm very sorry, we're going to have to take the floor off to investigate this issue. We don't have a solution which we think is safe to run.

  13. Lance STROLLWilliams

    Engineer: I

Lance STROLL: think the car is very much on the nose.

Engineer: Okay, copy that. So we'll take a full slow lap. Bottas will pull away next lap. No, I think it's too much. I will lose temperature. Okay, copy.

  14. Lance STROLLWilliams

Lance STROLL: My curve is so bad. I don't think this is feeling so good.

  15. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Understeer level in data looks high, Nico. Yeah, it does look, especially the low speed stuff.

  16. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Daniel RICCIARDO: I just backed off because I touched the apex wall.

Engineer: Okay, understood. Everything feel okay for you?

    Daniel RICCIARDO: I think so.

Engineer: Okay, we'll have a look through everything.

  17. Lance STROLLWilliams

Lance STROLL: I'm sliding around in my seat a lot. I'm moving in the car a lot.

Engineer: Okay, if you're bored to just watch for Sergei behind all the time. Lance, if you've got issues with the seat, then I'd suggest we box.

Lance STROLL: No, it's nothing that is like safety. Okay, just watch for Vettel coming through.

  18. Lance STROLLWilliams

    Lance STROLL: Can't focus.

  19. Pierre GASLYToro Rosso

Pierre GASLY: Tyler started to twitch on a little bit more yeah

Engineer: it was a good turn one this one was a good turn one

  20. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

    Brendon HARTLEY: ah it's a mess it's

    Engineer: a

    Brendon HARTLEY: mess yeah

Engineer: we went out of phase because of the mistake before we went out of phase no problem

Brendon HARTLEY: i'm gonna back off and go on phase copy

Engineer: that good idea charge on and

Brendon HARTLEY: if you can give some

  21. Carlos SAINZRenault

Engineer: and if you can give some balance feedback yeah for example in that lap i started to feel less rear still the lap time is not bad but uh definitely a bit less rear support okay understood so leclerc six seconds behind you on the time lap belt

  22. Esteban OCONForce India

    Engineer: I've

Esteban OCON: touched a bit in the slab at the exit of the chicane.

Engineer: Which side of the car, which side?

    Esteban OCON: Rear right.

Engineer: Cover that, we'll check it out.

  23. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Engineer: Okay, and it'll be reverse on, reverse on, and we'll box this lap.

    Daniel RICCIARDO: Okay.

Engineer: You have a clear track around you. Just think about whether you want to run low fuel or high fuel next run. We'll talk about it in the garage. Just have a think on the way in. Okay.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, I know what I want to do. I'll explain when I get in.

    Engineer: Understood.

  24. Stoffel VANDOORNEMcLaren

Engineer: Coast off recharge button on is good. Looks like you've found something the last couple of laps in the exit of the swimming pool. Hamilton behind is on an out lap. We're going to do one more timed lap. We'll try the engine settings from the test.

  25. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Just think about your def. Left front side to open up. Copy. Valtteri 18-0, struggling with front end.

  26. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Brendon HARTLEY: Okay, yep a lot so a bit of an a**hole there

Engineer: Alonzo what do you mean? I can't see Alonzo on the GPS? Ah okay, I can see him now

  27. Lance STROLLWilliams

Lance STROLL: The fronts just go away, and away, and away, and I get to the point where I can't even turn the car.

Engineer: Go back with the diff. Diff entry 7 and mid 1. No DRS, please.

  28. Sergio PEREZForce India

Engineer: Check it, we need to see if the graining clears up at all in the next laps. If you do need to use the rears more, remember you can give the fronts an easier time on the way in and use the rears more in traction.

  29. Sergio PEREZForce India

Engineer: Three more laps, three more laps.

Sergio PEREZ: It's very bad already.

Engineer: Understood, Checo. Understood. We do want to be safe, but we would like to get to the end of the session to do the launch.

  30. Carlos SAINZRenault

    Engineer: Copy that.

  31. Fernando ALONSOMcLaren

Engineer: OK Fernanda you're doing a good job there. So we would like to please do four burnouts, four burnouts, we'll launch from the left hand side, target 38, 38 and we'll use scenario 8 for the launch please, scenario 8.
