Singapore Grand Prix 2018: Practice 1 team radio

45 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Singapore Grand Prix 2018, across 16 drivers. 43 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Daniel RICCIARDO had the most, with 7.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Pierre GASLYToro Rosso

Pierre GASLY: There is so much dust on track, especially last sector.

Engineer: Yeah, we have seen it on TV.

  2. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: Yeah, it's not too much to comment on at the moment, obviously I was very far away from the limit. OK, one thing to highlight, that the front left disc didn't wake up, so we need to put more energy in the brakes in the outlock. OK, copy.

  3. Lance STROLLWilliams

Lance STROLL: The dash is not bright enough, can I make it brighter?

Engineer: OK, just watch the Vettel, he's four seconds back, it's multi-A, orange dim, smaller number, brighter dash.

  4. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: And out of 5, K1 test.

Sebastian VETTEL: OK, copy. Then I take a breather.

Engineer: OK, copy. So wait for K1.

  5. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: We

    Engineer: have

Max VERSTAPPEN: some weird flying going on.

  6. Lance STROLLWilliams

Lance STROLL: Yeah, the front is not a very good mid-corner.

  7. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Two more laps, so cool down now and push for the next, next being in engine 4, and track is clear behind.

  8. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: In terms of sectors, just down in middle sector, two tenths, and down final sector, nearly four tenths. Biggest weakness, braking for turn 14, but you did have traffic.

  9. Kimi RAIKKONENFerrari

Engineer: Kimi will be a long change, about half an hour, if you want to jump out or stay into the car as you prefer.

  10. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Massive de-brakes all out there

  11. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

    Engineer: My

Nico HULKENBERG: rear tyre temps are not showing,

Engineer: what are they? No, we have a problem so I cannot tell you, sorry. Nico, could you go to SOC 13 for one lap discharge please? So, confirming rear tyre temperature and pressure sensors are not working.

  12. Carlos SAINZRenault

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, believe us, I'm always here in the corner, especially turn 5, because he's

    Engineer: here

Carlos SAINZ: at the moment. I needed to go to entry 9 just to make sure I didn't get it.

    Engineer: Okay, copy that.

  13. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Okay, I'm checking with the guys on that

  14. Sergio PEREZForce India

Engineer: You can break later in term 1 and 5.

  15. Stoffel VANDOORNEMcLaren

Engineer: And stop we still see some overlap throttle and brake so keep an eye on that

  16. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Okay, well car is still like a handbrake. I can't turn the wheel properly.

    Engineer: Understood.

  17. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Brendon HARTLEY: I got blocked. Forced India. I don't know what he was doing, but anyway.

  18. Sergio PEREZForce India

Engineer: We can do one more cool, one more push, but the cool lap cannot be any longer than it was before, so aim for plus 40, plus 40 for timing.

  19. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Daniel RICCIARDO: Driver abilities talk to that lap. Understood.

Engineer: You can go back to mode 4, mode 4.

  20. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: The start of the lap is coming together, okay?

  21. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: I do have some washout others there, especially at the start of the lap.

  22. Pierre GASLYToro Rosso

Pierre GASLY: Ok, we need to do something for the front brakes, all the time I start the lap I have massive pulling into the hand, I cannot brake properly, so much pulling to the left, and we need to improve the traction, the combined traction is really poor.

Engineer: Ok, we are looking at it.

  23. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: This is

Lewis HAMILTON: my left, we'll keep looking.

Engineer: OK, we'll have a look. OK, so it looks like there's a bit of bottoming into Turn 1, that may cause that front under rotation.

  24. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: You can overtake Sirodkin if you want. If you can't overtake, don't get too close.

  25. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Track is starting to get busy.

  26. Brendon HARTLEYToro Rosso

Engineer: Charge on as soon as you can. Yeah, way too much understeer. Focus on recharge. Way too much understeer.

  27. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Lewis, if you think you want to go once more, you can, track's getting busy though, we have 14 cars out there now.

  28. Fernando ALONSOMcLaren

Engineer: No DRS back Okay, understood

  29. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  30. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Engineer: I know the numbers are a bit lower than we talked about, but if the grip's there, that's okay.

  31. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Looking for some apex speed at 5 and 9, 5 and 9.

  32. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Daniel RICCIARDO: Has anyone improved on the second lap?

    Engineer: Vettel improved, middle sector

  33. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Engineer: You can chill in the corners but just keep up the pace and straight stop at the battery.

  34. Sergey SIROTKINWilliams

Engineer: we'd like to try and open a push lap and we'll just see how this flat spot is copy

  35. Sergio PEREZForce India

Engineer: First we're here, well done, getting in. Understood, let's do a launch.

  36. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Why are you not giving time updates? Vouchers had three slow laps

  37. Fernando ALONSOMcLaren

Engineer: And there's a few... Low power. Low

    Fernando ALONSO: power.

Engineer: Understood, stand by. And it will recover. And it should have recovered by now. Okay, stand by.

  38. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: For reference Mercedes on softs

  39. Fernando ALONSOMcLaren

Engineer: Fernando, it's possible a lot of cars are out on high fuel.

  40. Sergio PEREZForce India

Engineer: Check us out at the moment Roo. The only cars on softs are ourselves and Mercedes.

  41. Stoffel VANDOORNEMcLaren

Engineer: We've lost hydraulic pressure. Box now. Cool the brakes. And scenario one. Scenario one.

  42. Charles LECLERCSauber

    Engineer: Ah, sorry

    Charles LECLERC: guys, my

    Engineer: fault,

Charles LECLERC: I touched the wall,

    Engineer: I'm

Charles LECLERC: in the front right, it's damaged,

    Engineer: they

Charles LECLERC: are putting extinguisher, but it's only the brakes that are fuming, but it's fine, no?

  43. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  44. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: ...is the right front.

Engineer: Understood. Use your tools to help it.

  45. Daniel RICCIARDORed Bull

Engineer: So it does look like it was a good first lap and then everyone settled down a bit. Side temperatures have now peaked, so this is the grip that you're going to get.
