French Grand Prix 2019: Practice 1 team radio

39 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the French Grand Prix 2019, across 15 drivers. 34 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Carlos SAINZ had the most, with 5.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

  6. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: Dave, the burnout button, the start lights, they don't work, reliable. I pressed them three times.

    Engineer: We copy that, Nico.

  7. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: Dave, the burnout button, the start lights, they don't work, reliable. I pressed them three times.

    Engineer: We copy that, Nico.

  8. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: But there's something very weird on the front right my tire is dead

  9. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

Engineer: So, tyres will be on the cold side, you can push but pay attention on the tyres.

  10. Nicholas LATIFIWilliams

Nicholas LATIFI: I was getting quite a lot of cutting in 7th gear there, I'm not sure if that's normal

  11. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: Yep, so very strange valance, really oversteery with low speed, I think that's our biggest issue, high speed seems also touchy, the car feels very sharp on entries everywhere, and I really can't take any loads.

    Engineer: Okay, copy that.

  12. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Okay, you can't do two consecutive laps through the tiles.

    Engineer: Okay, understood.

  13. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: Here's some good barbecue in here.

    Engineer: Copy that, Nico.

  14. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Looked a bit better with entry 8

Alexander ALBON: Yeah, a bit better, but still Seemed to be very natural everywhere

    Engineer: Copy that

  15. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Yeah, that was a mess at PDEXIT, so I chose what felt right, just to avoid people and give them a clear shot.

    Engineer: Ok, copy.

  16. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I don't know what's going on, I'm siding a lot, just can't find more grip lap by lap.

  17. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, wind has picked up a bit. That was a 15 kph tailwind when the car snapped. A bit more wind now.

  18. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

    Engineer: And

Valtteri BOTTAS: just a note the steering is pointing right hand down on the straights.

    Engineer: Okay we'll correct that.

  19. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Daniel RICCIARDO: I lost the front, turn 6.

  20. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

    Engineer: Any balance feedback?

Daniel RICCIARDO: Pretty similar, pretty similar I'd say, I'd say front left is a little bit trickier in the first part of the lap, particularly turn 6, but otherwise it's ok, pretty similar.

    Engineer: Ok, understood.

  21. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: How is that balance now?

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Better, but still, the rear is a bit nervous.

Engineer: Yeah, still nervous. Okay, let's see if we can keep some rear temp, start the lap around 90 instead of 85.

  22. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Okay, there's some time to gain on minimum speed it turns four five and turn nine

  23. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Main places to find time turn 8 carry more speed and into 11 into 11 you heard under rotation on the front inside

  24. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: So I think rather than use another lap which just box because we don't have any more tools left in the car to make it Better and we're just still useful to find out where we are on high fuel

  25. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

    Pierre GASLY: It's a

    Engineer: bit

Pierre GASLY: difficult with the traffic.

Engineer: Yeah, you just have to make the best of the situation, mate. I can't control everyone else. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, I know, I'm just telling you. It

    Pierre GASLY: wasn't

    Engineer: a

Pierre GASLY: perfect lap. Small pace.

  26. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

    Engineer: So that's B1.

  27. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Daniil KVYAT: Okay, so there is something loose hanging around my left feet.

    Engineer: Okay, we will check.

  28. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So we're going to do an anti-stall check in gear coming into the box but Lewis seven seconds ahead he'll probably be in the box so stop short quite well short in case he's not anti-stalling properly.

  29. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, do you want to try the other throttle map or happy with this one?

Carlos SAINZ: I'm actually happy with this one.

    Engineer: Okay, good.

  30. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Something doesn't feel quite right at the front.

  31. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, too much grinding. Can I box?

Engineer: We'd like to get a lap for the data with this front wing, Carlos. There's not time to do a setup change. I'd like to get one lap for this front wing.

  32. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Okay, check something didn't feel quite right at the front. I had some vibrations on the front axle Okay, the first sector in particular like turn four particular Okay, the car was a lot on the nose

    Engineer: We

Sebastian VETTEL: don't see anything at the moment, but we are checking

  33. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And we can go again this lap if you want to.

Lando NORRIS: There's no point, I can't tell you anything. The tyres are too destroyed to give you any feedback to.

  34. Lando NORRISMcLaren

    Engineer: What

    Lando NORRIS: do

    Engineer: you want

Lando NORRIS: me to do? It's so understeery, I won't

    Engineer: give

Lando NORRIS: you any feedback, but do you want me to do another lap for the day?

Engineer: If you're not going to get a read, then there's no point doing another lap, so I suggest we box this lap.

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, confirmed. Box this lap.

  35. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: The fronts are getting a pretty hard time, front left is taking profit off.

  36. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Pierre GASLY: Yeah, we're good. Just let's complete the rear

  37. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: How are the tires? How are the flat spots?

    Pierre GASLY: Yeah, they're square

  38. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: We're in the tyre where the car starts pulling to the right a lot.

    Engineer: Copy that Niko, understood.

  39. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Sorry Alex, we didn't get the static pit stop, it's a shame
