French Grand Prix 2019: Practice 2 team radio

50 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the French Grand Prix 2019, across 15 drivers. 49 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Romain GROSJEAN had the most, with 9.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Engineer: and easy on tires easy on tires

  2. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Kvyat coming onto the main straight now, he's done a very slow out lap, he's the only car on track though.

  3. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Check the vibration level. We are looking. I think we need to box based on the vibration. Mate, I'm going to do a couple of throw laps. See if it clears off. Because I don't want to stop now. Understood.

  4. Romain GROSJEANHaas

    Engineer: It's a f***ing

Romain GROSJEAN: joke, did we get touching? Why is the outside wheel just locking like this?

Engineer: No touching, it's not touching related. Roman, we need to abort this, we need to box, the loads are too high.

Romain GROSJEAN: I don't really care.

  5. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Daniil KVYAT: Yeah, I'm getting some fuel under the cylinder, 6 for example, and 11 tires vibrating in the bed.

  6. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Can you tell me if there's

    Engineer: a

Lando NORRIS: difference in wind or not compared to P1?

Engineer: We think the direction is the same, but potentially it's stronger. So direction the same, but stronger.

  7. George RUSSELLWilliams

    Engineer: Huge

George RUSSELL: amount of over-rotation and the brakes.

Engineer: Copy that, I'll get back to you. It

George RUSSELL: feels more aero than anything we can do with maps. Just lack of load. And apex understeer.

  8. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Yeah, the Williams was quite nice, the parking at the exit of turn

    Engineer: 11.

  9. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: How was the balance? How was the car? Any different from the morning?

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Yeah, it was, well,

Engineer: it was okay. Okay, there's a fair bit of gustiness out there even in the last sector, so that could be a factor.

  10. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

    Engineer: And also, good lap.

Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, yeah, I feel pretty good.

Engineer: OK, and we still feel like it's 7 gear for turn 10, please.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, yeah, understood. I just thought I'd try, but understood.

  11. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Front tyre's not balanced.

    Engineer: Okay, copy.

  12. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: Honestly, why would they be stopped on the outside of the corner there stupid

  13. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: I would just say the pace is, if we completed that lap, I think I would have ended up about eight tenths ahead than the previous lap.

Engineer: Yeah, for sure you were six tenths up before the issue, so.

  14. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: We can have one more lap if you want it, Max.

Max VERSTAPPEN: If you can give it a try.

Engineer: Yeah, don't back off your pace too much during this recharge lap.

  15. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando, may be difficult to tell, but do you have a preference for the first or second front wing? I can't really tell the difference, the tyres keep getting better, so

    Lando NORRIS: yeah,

    Engineer: I don't mind. Yep, that's fine.

  16. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Engineer: Danny, what's the limitation in turn 4 and 5?

Daniil KVYAT: Understeering the power, rear pushing the front. I'm sure it will be very disallowed though.

    Engineer: Copy that.

  17. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Okay, need some help? Yeah, we saw the snap, we're looking at it, we're looking at it. Yeah.

  18. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

    Engineer: More push, more push.

  19. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Good luck, dude. Good luck.

  20. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: And let's just try and get the rear carcass temps down a little bit, especially on the front as well. Um, I kind of disagree. The balance is very oversteered to start the lap, and gets to understeer at the end of the lap, so it looks like the rears are picking up. Okay, understood.

  21. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: OK, recharge on and box this lap.

Nico HULKENBERG: I'd like to do one more.

Engineer: Copy, stand by. 8th Nico, go for one more time lap.

Nico HULKENBERG: You've got Perez... Probably just out of sync with everybody, it was great again.

Engineer: Yeah, well they all came out in front of us, yep.

  22. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah

  23. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Yeah, I didn't mistake it, 10-6. Okay, copy that.

  24. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Romain GROSJEAN: I don't have a word. Do you want to try another lap or box? I need something. I need something here.

    Engineer: Okay, we're looking. We're looking. I

Romain GROSJEAN: can't have a car which is good over the first five corners. And I got there and I'm sideways.

  25. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And let me know if you would like to go through the pit and adjust the front wing or we proceed with the plan?

Charles LECLERC: We can proceed with the plan.

Engineer: Okay, so box now for a practice start at the end of the pit lane.

  26. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  27. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Romain GROSJEAN: I don't know what's going on in the last sector, but really the fronts are massively giving up.

    Engineer: Okay, understood.

  28. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Very strange engine problems. Exit of

    Engineer: the

Carlos SAINZ: last corner, very strange engine noises during the whole lap.

  29. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

    Engineer: Did

Carlos SAINZ: you see it on the data? It was very strange, like

Engineer: something is... Yeah, Simone is investigating.

  30. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

    Engineer: Engines OK

  31. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: And Carlos, was the drivability better that lap? Was the PU better that lap?

Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, but still some oscillations on full throttle. Copy. But it's better.

  32. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Louis is currently out of action, so it will be useful data the one you're collecting

  33. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: The rears have dropped a lot this lap.

    Engineer: Copy that.

  34. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: Some weird upshift out of 12, sounded like a clutched upshift.

Engineer: Copy that Niko, out of turn 12.

  35. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

    Nico HULKENBERG: Nice spot

  36. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Engineer: Is the wind changing? Last corner is still at wind

  37. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: tyre sensors are not working so don't look at the numbers on the display for tyres

  38. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Reminder, right rear button, reminder, right rear button.

    Pierre GASLY: Louder please.

Engineer: Right rear button, right rear button, now.

    Pierre GASLY: Better now.

  39. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: And how are the tyres?

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yes, the rear has dropped off a bit the last lap.

    Engineer: OK, understood.

  40. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Daniel RICCIARDO: The front's not in issue at the moment.

    Engineer: Ok, understood.

  41. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, I lost it in 8, a little bit, so slow it up.

    Engineer: Yep, understood.

    Max VERSTAPPEN: I'm clipping massively.

Engineer: Engine 5, position 1, engine 5, position 1, and copy that message.

  42. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: And update on tyres. Everything

Valtteri BOTTAS: very consistent. Just have a bit of a flat spot on the left which is creating some understeer on the right.

Engineer: Copy, we can hear it in your voice. Yeah!

  43. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: All the tires are gone

  44. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Is it normal I'm clipping so much?

Engineer: Stand by, I'll get you posted. K-Clips as expected Max.

  45. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Why am I at the bottom of the pack? No I'm not, mistake, yeah I'm at the bottom of the pack.

Engineer: And Lando our initial settings weren't white correct, it should come back up now.

  46. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: No, it's doing something funny.

Engineer: Ok, can you use anti-overtake to bring the pack back up?

Lando NORRIS: I don't think so.

Engineer: You just need to use it earlier, continue to use anti-overtake and it should work.

  47. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: and we're going to hold you we need to look into the front left brake duct possible debris

  48. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: And when you can, can you give us an update on balance and tyres please?

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, it's all stable for now. Started a little light on the wheel, now it's fairly balanced.

    Engineer: OK, understood.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, front's dropping a little.

  49. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Let's cool the car a bit for now.

  50. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: OK, can we go recharge on please, recharge on, and let's cool the car a bit for now.

    Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, understood.
