Team radio transcript

French Grand Prix 2019: Race team radio

100 radio messages were recorded during race at the French Grand Prix 2019, across 19 drivers. 98 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Lewis HAMILTON had the most, with 15.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

    Engineer: Radio, check pit lane.

    Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Radio's good.

Engineer: Loud and clear. OK, practice start on the way out.

  2. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: ok and it will be straight out no start straight out and track is clear track clear radio check around the track if you can copy

    Charles LECLERC: loud

    Engineer: and clear

  3. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Does it have to be like the wreck elapse when I need to fill the car a bit? That was an urgent request Niko, sorry. I don't know if I've done it now or not, it's B11 on. Fail B03 on please Niko, please repeat.

  4. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Cool the car and box box for another start, so strap 1.

Valtteri BOTTAS: Now it's still 12 now.

Engineer: You can stay in 12.

  5. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, Kevin, multi-grip 10, multi-grip 10 for the next practice start.

  6. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And cool the car, cool the car for this lap.

  7. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando as you approach the back of the grid, it's going to be a bite point find and then go to P1 once at the back.

  8. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Okay, I can see you're already cooling the car, so you're going to the grid.

  9. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: You can recharge on and go to the grid so P1 at the back of the grid and stay in P1 please.

  10. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: I

Lewis HAMILTON: never thought of it, but Sam, you could be a security guard.

Engineer: We all knew Sam had an aggressive streak in him.

  11. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: What's the wind

Lewis HAMILTON: direction currently, still tailwind turn one?

Engineer: Basically a tailwind into one, similar direction to other bays.

  12. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: I'm

Lewis HAMILTON: tempted to take out half a hole, at least. Why not?

Engineer: Yeah, just a small tickle, happy to do that. I won't venture too far, but if you want to come down half, just let us know.

  13. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: OK run through your formation lap procedures, the gearbox should remain 6 on the grid once we've tied up, pit lane speed limiter on please, standard 5.5 once the car is on the ground, and carry out your demo grid launch, a reminder that will go to just 60 kph. Then into mode 12, as many times between 1st and 2nd during the formation lap, remember to work your tyres if you've been through that, and confirm gear sync before turn 1. As you come out of the final turn, from the Pirelli wall advertising on the right hand side, key click the overtake, we'll have two burnouts, that's two burnouts, and then perform one extra ramp rather than just coasting down to your grid box. Mode 3 for the race start, and stationary time today, just 4.5. 42 seconds, 4-2.

  14. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Pierre GASLY: Could you just check here in my seat I have something that scratched my back a bit

  15. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Track temp is ramping up a bit, now we're reading 57.

  16. Robert KUBICAWilliams

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  17. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos if you go to h13 you can adjust the radio volume now this is the on track setting so h13 you should then be able to adjust the volume and I can keep talking so you can judge where the volume should be give me a thumbs up when you're happy otherwise I'll just keep talking rubbish at

  18. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Okay, Carlos, tyre information. So, medium runners are Albon, Magnussen, Perez, Kubica and Russell. You soft behind you are Gasly and Giovinazzi. All other cars behind are on hard.

  19. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Valtteri add one second Leclerc P3

  20. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: Mode 7. Mode 7. Overtake available.

  21. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

    Engineer: SCENARIO 1 PLEASE

  22. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: We are ok with tyres, the car is ok, let's try to get the positions back

  23. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

    Engineer: DRS enabled DRS enabled

  24. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: I'm not pulling out of the corners, there is a lag.

    Engineer: Okay, stand by.

  25. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Can we have PU4, position 11, please, Nico?

  26. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Your front left surface temp sensor has failed, and left hand tyres are suffering the most.

  27. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: OK, let's go back to HPP shift position 4, shift position 4.

Lewis HAMILTON: Make a decision and stick with it.

  28. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Okay, boat is in front 2.3 and behind you have burst up in at 2 seconds.

  29. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: P.U. 12, position 4, please, Nico. Leave it, leave it.

  30. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Charles we are going to plan A, gap to Verstappen behind at 2.0, we need this gap.

    Charles LECLERC: Copy.

  31. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And on the last lap you're almost two tenths quicker than Gasly. First car is pitted, it's Giovinazzi.

  32. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: So Carlos, we see light inboard front graining, that is expected, that is expected.

  33. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: How is the tire? How is the tire?

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: It's difficult to keep it at low temperature.

  34. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Recommendation for Apex rotation if you do need it is Torque 5 rather than Diff. Diff is fully unlocked. Torque 5.

  35. George RUSSELLWilliams

Engineer: So with the current pace ahead with Robert, we expect the lead cars to be with us five laps earlier than planned.

  36. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: We are doing well, we are doing well, we are on plan A plus 2 at the moment.

  37. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And a bit of an update for you we think plan A looking to extend Carlos is speeding up we'd like to go with him

  38. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Engineer: Be careful. Exit last corner. Exit turn 5. Look after rear tyres. Exit last corner. Exit turn 5.

  39. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: Something

Lewis HAMILTON: broke in my seat.

    Engineer: Copy.

  40. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Kaza had a starting to struggle opportunities will come

  41. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  42. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

Pierre GASLY: I need more power

    Engineer: Copy

  43. Robert KUBICAWilliams

    Engineer: A

Robert KUBICA: bit of wear in front left and rear deck slightly, smaller rear deck.

Engineer: Okay, copy that, you're doing a good job.

  44. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: I'm really under big pressure here.

  45. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: target lap time 35.3 35 points yeah but what is this what

Charles LECLERC: is this is this Mercedes who is doing that so

    Engineer: this is from Sebastian

  46. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, I can't go faster than this all

Engineer: right just keep it up max keep this pace

  47. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Carlos Ricciardo is nine seconds outside our pit window we're going to try and get to target lap but we need good pace now

  48. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Pace, 4 tenths quicker than Ferrari in the last two laps, looks like they started struggling with the front.

  49. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: And we see high tyre energies in sector 3, high tyre energy in sector 3 on the front, so watch those please.

  50. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Opposite to Verstappen, watch out.

  51. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Niko we have one lap of scenario two available when you think you've got a good chance of getting Raikkonen.

  52. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: We go as long as possible. We go as long as possible. Yeah, copy with you. I'm with you

  53. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: How critical is the basket?

Engineer: Not critical. Priority is the tyre, Carlos. Priority is the tyre. More wear than expected on medium.

  54. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Need to get a bit of a push on here actually, Max, for the moment.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Mate, I'm trying, but it's not that I have a magic throttle pedal.

  55. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Tire's still good. Tire's still good.

  56. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Now I'd say, probably going to put half a hole into a hole in.

Engineer: OK copy that Lewis, so Valtteri was a 36.5, thinking he may have had a yellow, but Vettel a 35.8.

  57. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: Okay, so box box

  58. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: OK, we need to box. I locked up front left, doesn't look so good.

    Engineer: Copy, box. Copy, box.

  59. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Ok Carlos, tyres are up to temperature, let's see if we can squeeze past Albon, see if you can squeeze past. I

Carlos SAINZ: feel like we could bathe later in the race if I move now, the car is very early now.

  60. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Romain GROSJEAN: May we return the track very dangerously and had to go around we

    Engineer: saw we saw understood

  61. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: Concentrate on the exit of nine losing a bit of time exit of nine bit too quick through eight and nine mid-corner losing on the exit

  62. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And Charles, can you push more than this, question?

Charles LECLERC: I could, but it's not good for the tyres, so no.

  63. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Lando, priority one is still to get to the end with good tyres. The car behind Kvyat is now Ricciardo. He's 5.4 seconds back. We'd like you and Carlos to both target 36.5 please. 36.5 so that last lap of yours was good.

  64. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

    Engineer: Don't forget to drink

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, it's not connected. I just tried

  65. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Ok dude, let's get back into it like you were before, let's get for high 36's please, high 36's Yeah,

Romain GROSJEAN: doing my best, the

Engineer: perm is in traffic, the tires are completely under limit sir, yeah Understood, understood

  66. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: Jesus these guys are fast on the straight

  67. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Push like hell mate, push like hell.

  68. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: This side doesn't feel as good as the other one.

    Engineer: OK, copy.

  69. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: I can see Lando pushing behind. Do you want me to pick up the pace?

Engineer: Ricciardo last lap 136.1. Let's try and match that. Lando's matching that.

  70. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, I can't do anything. I'm just waiting for Carlos to do anything, so if you want to tell him to pick up the pace, then just do that. I'm just stuck behind him.

  71. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Carlos, we need 135.8 now, 135.8 and use left hand side toggle turn 12 to protect front locking.

  72. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: We can see blistering on the fronts for both cars, we don't think it's going to be an issue.

  73. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: OK Lando, we're managing a small issue. We cannot use DRS even if it's available. We cannot use DRS.

Lando NORRIS: Like it won't work or I'm not allowed?

    Engineer: You're not allowed.

  74. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Both fronts have blisters

Engineer: Okay, copy Lewis. So we think that should clean up but just be mindful there'll be low rubber in that region So just be mindful of flat spots

Lewis HAMILTON: The right one looks pretty deep but I'm sure it's okay

  75. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: What's the condition of the tires for you? Update? OK for now, OK for now. Copy.

  76. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: I'm having really bad upshifts really aggressive upshifts okay Lando this is part of the problem we're managing there's nothing we can do right now deal with it the best you can mate okay

  77. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: And we are on plan F, plan F, head down, keep pushing, good lap times.

  78. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: It looks like Vettel will have a free stop at the end to go for fastest lap.

  79. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: We see high loads on suspension, turn 4 apex kerb, turn 11 exit kerb, please stay off them.

  80. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Okay, so Norris is struggling with tires and other problems with his car so he's up there for grabs

  81. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: How's the balance, Lance? How's the balance?

  82. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: The car will become unstable because of the diff first and then the steering is going to get heavier. That's going to be the problems to face, you just got to concentrate, head down and do the best. The

Lando NORRIS: steering is already getting much heavier.

  83. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: We need to retire the car, Romain, we need to retire the car.

  84. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: So Lando, the adjustments we can make to help is brake balance, so going up on B, up on B and reducing engine braking, so going up on orange E as well.

  85. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So the car ahead, Norris, may have that suspected hydraulics issue, so just be mindful of that.

  86. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Engineer: The

    Max VERSTAPPEN: tires are pretty

  87. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: What is the target for fastest lap currently?

Engineer: We have 33.5 at the moment on used tyres.

  88. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And you can press and hold overtake for five seconds on two straights, only five seconds. Ah,

    Lando NORRIS: ****,

    Engineer: I'm sorry, boys.

  89. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Getting there Lewis. That was an absolutely blistering drive there mate. Awesome race pace.

Lewis HAMILTON: Phenomenal weekend guys. Just so proud of everyone. Thank you so much for the hard work, continued work. Let's keep it up.

  90. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: And that's P8, P8, well done my friend, fantastic race, hope you had fun.

    Kimi RAIKKONEN: Yeah, it was

    Engineer: a

Kimi RAIKKONEN: bit hectic last corners, last lap I'll do, thank you.

Engineer: Ok, great race, well done, pick up rubber and you're on the right mode.

  91. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Mate, I think you need to hold your head up really high here. You drove absolutely awesomely the whole weekend. From P1 to qualifying you did a fantastic job and in the race you did a great job too. I'll explain the problem later, but you drove really well, mate.

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, I got it. I'm disappointed because it could have been much better, you know. Apart from that, yeah, good job all weekend. It's been a good one.

    Engineer: Thanks

Lando NORRIS: to all you guys and everyone back at the factory. Yeah, let's keep fighting to the next one.

Engineer: Exactly. We've proved our point. We'll keep fighting. We'll go get them in Austria.

Lando NORRIS: By the way, I think Ricciardo joined the track fairly unsafely. When he went wide, he went off the track, came back on and wasn't safe at all.

Engineer: Yeah, they're just replaying it on TV now. And Lando, you've been given driver of the day, mate. You've been given driver of the day.

    Lando NORRIS: Nice. Cheers, guys.

  92. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: come in you got it we got it nice job by 20 milliseconds

  93. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: worth a try the last lap. Yeah copy Lewis yeah very close in fact. How much was I off? Couple of hundreds. You can never have a defeatist mind you always have to go for things dudes. If we had planned that then I could have got another cent quicker if we had planned it properly. Yeah copy that's a lesson for us.

  94. Charles LECLERCFerrari

    Engineer: Good job, P3.

Charles LECLERC: Congratulations guys, it wasn't an easy race, but I think it's a difficult time in the P3. To do a race like this, congratulations, thank you for the car, it's all good actually.

Engineer: You did a really good job, thank you.

  95. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Phew, nice lap there. P7, well done mate, well done, P7. That

    Daniel RICCIARDO: was fun.

    Engineer: Nice job, mate.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Thanks. Firstly, I apologise for the start. I had a good launch and then was just too conservative on the inside, so put us out of position. Sorry for that, I gave myself some work to do.

Engineer: No worries, mate. You did a good job.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Don't apologise, Daniel. It was a fun race to watch, from where we were. OK, thank you Cyril. Where did Nico finish? Did he get Norris?

Engineer: Nico got Norris. He's P9.

    Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, nice work.

  96. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Okay Nico, there you go. P9, great job mate.

Nico HULKENBERG: Oh man, man, man, man. What a **** this traffic and this aero effect.

Engineer: You're absolutely right Nico, but you did a fantastic job there. Absolutely brilliant mate. P13 to P9 will take that. Well done mate.

  97. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Well done Max, really well done mate. P4, you got everything out of it again. Fail 84. Not

Max VERSTAPPEN: bad that, I mean I was wishing hard so I ran out of tyres.

Engineer: Yeah, you did what you had to do. Kept in touch for most of the race, that was really good, really really good. Yeah well done Max, you got every single ounce out of that today, so well done.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, we were on the hard tyre initially, I think we looked quite competitive.

Engineer: Yeah, there'll be more coming, there'll be more coming, we've just got to stick with it and the performance will come.

  98. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Sergio PEREZ: So what what I could have done different for the penalty I don't understand I Don't know what I did wrong. It's impossible for me to judge where I am on track

Engineer: Yeah, okay checker. Yeah, we copy that. Yep. We copy that you did what was asked. So yeah, we're going to it more detail later

Sergio PEREZ: Did we told them during the race that I did what I'm supposed to do that I follow the rule

Engineer: Yes, we did check I copy that. Yep

  99. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Daniil KVYAT: Yes, we did a good race. Thank you.

  100. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: OK, sorry guys, I really really messed up, I didn't expect to lose so much grip from the outside there in turn 2 and then the, yeah, that was it really, I think I didn't get

    Engineer: to use

Alexander ALBON: the prime tyre properly, that was it

Engineer: OK understood, and also we'll have a look what happened after the pit stop in 5.6

Alexander ALBON: Yeah, just for me it's just no grip when I come up the pit lane
