French Grand Prix 2019: Qualifying team radio

41 radio messages were recorded during qualifying at the French Grand Prix 2019, across 15 drivers. Carlos SAINZ had the most, with 6.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: And brake adjuster, big adjuster rearward to warm the rears.

  2. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Brake warm-up looking good. Keep warming the brakes.

  3. George RUSSELLWilliams

    George RUSSELL: Car

    Engineer: is

George RUSSELL: going very good. No rear support on entry, massive understeer at apex.

  4. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Good focus on recharge, good focus on recharge while you can.

Nico HULKENBERG: Don't know if it's just poor warm-up but quite a lot of runners there, especially the first half of the lap.

    Engineer: Copy that Nico.

  5. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: So, use less engine braking, less engine braking, turn 3, 15 kph tailwind, recorded on car.

  6. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Valtteri BOTTAS: Truck has reset a bit, a bit slippery.

    Engineer: Aye, sir.

  7. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Make sure you click the push toggle slightly earlier before turn 8.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, but it's too much, the push toggle.

    Engineer: OK, understood.

  8. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: And how was the balance?

Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, understood. Yeah, first lap, front wasn't there. I'd say I still needed a little bit of front grip.

    Engineer: But

Daniel RICCIARDO: the rear's not exactly planted either. But yeah, a little bit of front grip we could chase.

    Engineer: OK, understood.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, it doesn't feel as good as the morning.

  9. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: It feels like the wind's picking up a little bit here.

  10. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: So first sector good, second sector down a little bit, third.

Engineer: Affirm, yeah second sector that was the turn 9 snap, third sector practically zero, just a little bit of time you could find entry last two corners.

  11. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Antonio, keep in mind, track limit turn 6, if you go over the line with all 4 wheels you get a warning.

    Antonio GIOVINAZZI: OK.

  12. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: So it seems like the track is gripping up quite quickly.

  13. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, checkered flag, checkered flag, press the in button, yep, P12, so you're safe, yeah, safe by about 0.4, good job.

  14. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: Balance is good, just the car was too different to the first run. I didn't really get used to it, so leave it like this and we'll see. Understood.

Engineer: We think we can maybe take an extra half a step on flap, what do you think?

Alexander ALBON: I... I don't think so. I want to leave it to the first run.

    Engineer: Understood.

Alexander ALBON: Car is really bad in turn 8, turn 9 Yannis. Maybe two steps off.

  15. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Ok, and how was the balance?

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, it was more together that run, I'd say similar feeling but just more grip, so I think we're close on wing.

    Engineer: Ok, copy that.

  16. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: So, Nico, important point, we must not use 8th gear through turn 10, OK? So you must stay in 7th under all circumstances, please.

    Nico HULKENBERG: Copy.

Engineer: It is the quickest way anyway, but we must do that for other reasons as well.

  17. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And mode push for last corner, mode push.

  18. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: So relatively calm now. So currently P2, it's half a second to P1, it's everything in the middle sector, axial 10-9, but you must know it.

  19. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Do you think the time is safe? Should I save this tyre or not?

Engineer: We are going to prepare to go again So

Lewis HAMILTON: you don't think it's safe?

Engineer: We think the time is safe but just want to circle just to make sure cover track ramp we may abort So places to approve, minimum speed turn 1 and 12

  20. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Non DRS, but keep up the pace on the way in please, just look after the left hand side tyres obviously, don't stress them in high speed.

  21. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: And BOK, Sebastian BOK, drive is on flat angle, we go for another lap, on medium, go up, two clicks, copy.

  22. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: There's lap time in hand here, keep pushing till turn 6 please, currently P7, there's still lap time in hand here.

  23. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Can you ask Seb to speed up please?

Engineer: We are asking him, so he should do that.

  24. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Can you be faster? We have 10 seconds margin also, only for chance. Yeah, how much more margin do you need? It should be fine, just don't slow down. Exactly. Yeah, it's fine. No, I'm not trying to kill him, so don't worry.

  25. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Nico HULKENBERG: So, your voice don't sound good.

Engineer: No, we're P11, so we're out of the session I'm afraid. In fact, we're now P12.

Nico HULKENBERG: That second lap, the rear felt like worse than on the first lap. Already starting the lap, much more snaps.

  26. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Carlos, so that didn't quite work as we planned but you still finished P7 in that session. So Lando jumped up to a 130.0 but Ricciardo improved on the medium at the end so he is P8 and then Giovinazzi and Gasly are the other two cars who got through, they both ran the soft.

  27. Pierre GASLYRed Bull

    Pierre GASLY: Are we in?

Engineer: Currently P10, stay negative on Delta, yeah we are P10 Pierre, we are P10

Pierre GASLY: Could you advise me what to do on the warm-up lap, I don't feel like the tyres are switched on, can you give me feedback?

Engineer: Yeah understood, thinking about front flap

  28. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Ok Antonio, well done, good job. Front wing still happy?

  29. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos pull into the start area, do what Mercedes did, I'm sending the car but we try and get a tow that way

  30. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: There's a lot of cars ahead of me.

  31. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: Box, box, box. Don't know why I hadn't missed upshift.

    Engineer: Ok, box.

  32. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Did I get a massive tailwind out of 5? What was that?

Engineer: Yep, confirm. So 5 into 6, the wind switched massively from head to tail. Yeah, crazy.

  33. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: What happened in the straight between turn 9 and 11? I lost so much.

Engineer: So all the drivers are reporting wind change of direction, wind direction change, so we'll check that.

  34. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Engine 6, position 10, engine 6, position 10 It's already in that one Sorry, position 9, engine 6, position 9

  35. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Ok Lando, you're the sixth car out on track. The car in front of you is Carlos, the car behind is Ricardo. There's going to be a bit of a pumping effect here, which we don't want to get caught out in.

  36. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Yeah, just hope Seb is not slowing down too much, because he is at the moment.

Engineer: Okay, it will be fine, it will be fine.

  37. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: That's it Lewis, get in there mate, well done. That's pole position, fantastic job.

  38. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Felt like something was wrong with the car on the right rear.

Engineer: Ok, copy. We'll have a look.

  39. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Lando, qualifying order for you. Hamilton, Bottas, Leclerc, Verstappen, yourself, Carlos, Vettel, Ricciardo, Gasly, Giovinazzi. Well done mate, great job.

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, it's a good one. Well done guys. Nice result but we can all change tomorrow so keep working hard.

  40. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Carlos, good job, good job. I'll keep you updated as we go. And Vettel finished P7, so McLaren's are 5th and 6th, Lando P5, you're P6. There's 1 10th in it.

Carlos SAINZ: Aye, aye, aye, nearly. Anyway, good job guys. Well deserved for the team.

Engineer: Yeah, well done. And we're set up for a good race tomorrow as well. Set up for a good race tomorrow.

  41. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: where did i lose it uh

Engineer: turn 12 and the final corner carlos turn 12 in the final corner you were 10th up into turn 12.
