Singapore Grand Prix 2019: Practice 1 team radio

31 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Singapore Grand Prix 2019, across 13 drivers. Carlos SAINZ had the most, with 4.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: OK, so it will be two burnouts and a start please, so it will be first gear start.

  2. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: So a reminder for Aero P4 5th gear cruise please.

  3. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: and just a reminder DRS OFF for the first outlap

  4. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Carlos, so we're staying out, this is a once past. You should go to scenario 5 for the in-lap, scenario 5.

  5. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Okay, let's do a start. Oh, you want to start in here also? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's do a start.

  6. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Engineer: Yeah we've got 10 minutes, 10 minutes Lance. Until we go back out or you want me back in the car in 10 minutes? Until we go back out, 10 minutes until we go back out.

    Lance STROLL: Okay.

  7. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Ok Kimi, when you stop on position, you can do an all-drive test, and for that you need a K21.

  8. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: For the next lap we'll do constant speeds whilst we do the cool down.

  9. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: I can't see anything so I'm blind. Yeah, we know. With the under dash.

  10. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Okay Carlos, that's P5. P5, you're the only guy on hard, most cars on medium.

  11. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Same lap time as Sainz, and Kvyat's 0.3 quicker, so it looks in the window.

  12. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: The retardation on the brakes, it's really bad.

Engineer: Really bad, okay. Understood. All the way through the brake event or especially at the beginning?

    Kevin MAGNUSSEN: All the way.

Engineer: Okay, understood. We'll look into it.

  13. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Just check that I've got nothing damaged on my car, signs need to be in the wall.

Engineer: OK copy, we'll have a look at the loads.

  14. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Strat 8. All right so both Kubica and Perez ahead just complete the time lapse they'll be on slow laps expect your lap will be a fraction quicker. Russell behind also in phase and likewise Norris so all cars around you in phase don't be surprised if you are quicker.

  15. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Cool the car, please, cool the car. Aero P4 5th gear cruise after turn 5.

  16. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: We've had eight cars have run soft. On medium, fastest medium runner is Kvyat, he's done a 43.3

  17. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: Okay Nico, same procedure on this lap, track will be clear when you go out.

  18. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And still turn 11 minimum speed is the place to focus on, potentially back off turn 10 to achieve it.

  19. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: Happy to abort at the end of a lap if needed.

Engineer: Yeah we should be able to complete one time lap, we should be able to complete one time lap and then a potential hard in lap just to keep the learning going.

George RUSSELL: The velcro on the belts are not sticking so when I'm braking the return of the belt is flying all over the place.

  20. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: OK, Valtteri, so that's P2, 41.9, Lewis still P1 on the soft, 41.4, so this tyre doesn't look a bad one, rear left surface temp is in error.

  21. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: Okay, so we'll go for a cool-down lap. So that's P1. Double cool-down. Affirm. So there was more overeating on that second lap, as you might have felt.

  22. George RUSSELLWilliams

Engineer: Outlap prep was good last time round, just a suggestion if you can on the timelapse to try and limit slip out of turn 8 that's a particular one that will drive the tempter Go

George RUSSELL: again, how about turn 8?

Engineer: Turn 8, we seem to get a lot of wheel slip out of turn 8 on the timelapse and we think the track will improve by about 1.2 seconds, track improvement at 1.2

  23. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Yeah, I couldn't activate the...

Engineer: Okay, yeah, understood. That's the spot where it is intermittent, so they're going to fix it after this session, but keep trying to use it, that's fine.

  24. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: I might make it, I pass to the left of the ball out but yeah,

    Charles LECLERC: I

Engineer: don't have the choice anyway, I'm not going to stay on the first lane. Copy.

  25. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: So P12, Raman's P10, about 0.5 behind, but obviously the first sector from the first lap would be better, so if you put it all together it's a very similar lap time, so that's good.

  26. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

    Engineer: Okay 200, 200.

Sebastian VETTEL: Yeah, copy. Where's the issue with the red flag? It's

Engineer: brought us in the barriers at turn 18.

  27. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Engineer: Okay, 200, 200. Is he okay? Yeah, he's okay. It was low speed.

  28. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: do you think i will find traffic uh

Engineer: yeah carlos only four cars have left the pits so far behind you so you could meet some cars on outlaps difficult to be sure

  29. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Okay Max, so feedback on the start. You were a little bit cautious on the throttle pickup on the clutch release, so just bear that in mind next time.

  30. George RUSSELLWilliams

Engineer: So a high 48 is a good lap time, high 48.

  31. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

    Kimi RAIKKONEN: Crews

    Engineer: please.

    Kimi RAIKKONEN: Massive vibration.

    Engineer: Copy, massive vibration.
