Russian Grand Prix 2020: Practice 2 team radio

44 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the Russian Grand Prix 2020, across 16 drivers. 43 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Carlos SAINZ had the most, with 6.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: And you are the only car on track at the minute, only car on track.

  2. Romain GROSJEANHaas

    Engineer: The

Romain GROSJEAN: new map is much better.

  3. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Romain GROSJEAN: Okay Jude, it was really good until 13 and then I had exactly the same issue as this morning but the issue from the start of the outlap, well, yeah, I can't describe it without, you know, but yeah. So it was absolutely awesome on the outlap, got a little bit less good at the beginning and then went bad.

  4. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Kimi RAIKKONEN: Yeah, I have a vibration with that, yes.

  5. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: The car is touching quite a bit on the straight. Understood.

  6. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Alexander ALBON: It's okay in the medium speeds, it starts off a bit too much understeer again in turn 2 and turn 4 and then I was struggling a lot in turn 14 and 15 and 16

  7. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Ok Pierre, how was the car?

Pierre GASLY: It feels better. Back to N34? Bit more connected.

  8. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

    Carlos SAINZ: Carlos Gasly. Shall

    Engineer: we

Carlos SAINZ: use the chance to box for more front-weight? Yes, happy box.

Engineer: Gasly five seconds behind. Carlos, how much more would you like? One and a half? Suggest one and a half?

  9. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: I've got some weird pick up on the front left.

    Engineer: Copy, understood.

Charles LECLERC: Is it just paint on the front left? Is it all fine on data?

Engineer: Yes, everything is fine on data.

Charles LECLERC: Okay, because it's not going away, it's weird.

  10. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: The tyres are slowly increasing lap on lap, so we'll do a double cool please, any change to the balance at that time?

Alexander ALBON: Not really, no, just the rears are going off so fast, this time I just prepared a bit more, 10-13-14 OK, understood

  11. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: It feels like I'm laying more in my car. I'm not sure if I have the support behind my head.

Engineer: OK, coffee. Are you happy to continue for the moment?

    Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah.

  12. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: Ok, engine braking issue in the last corner, again. Copy that, we check.

Engineer: Happy to box or you need one more lap? I'm happy to box.

Pierre GASLY: I'm happy to box. Ok, box, box.

  13. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: How are the hard tires doing the

Engineer: hard tires don't look great, but some cars are able to go faster

  14. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Carlos SAINZ: Can you offset the iron balance on the other wing out, can we add flap on the wing? Equivalent.

Engineer: We've added the same flap to that wing as we've added during the run this time.

    Carlos SAINZ: Which means equivalent.

Engineer: So that wing needs two turns more, it's still two turns higher than you are now.

Carlos SAINZ: Can you do a bit more than that?

Engineer: Carlos, I think for one timed lap it's better to get a clean compare with the same balance. We'll do an extra half turn.

Carlos SAINZ: If not we will never know where the limit is on the soft turns.

    Engineer: Copy.

  15. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: It was strange the paint, I've never had a paint that stayed for so long on the tyre.

  16. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: So a little bit in turns six, seven, eight sorry seven and eight and then the chicane at the end of this straight turn 13 14. Actually Carlos the the loss there is a bit from the clipping is more from the clipping.

  17. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: Yeah

Lewis HAMILTON: it's feeling pretty good, do I need to call the car down?

Engineer: Copy, so stay out, you can take another lap

  18. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: We're seeing relatively high vibration metrics.

  19. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Holy **** man, I had no grip at all in the beginning.

  20. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Pierre GASLY: Yeah, I struggle to turn 15.

    Engineer: I

Pierre GASLY: don't know if you have anything to suggest there, but I can't turn the car at the apex. Yeah,

Engineer: we had a bit of front locking in this couple of corners. I actually turned 15, big front lock.

  21. Esteban OCONRenault

Engineer: For reference, Daniel is 34.6, obviously we know there's some differences there.

    Esteban OCON: Yep, copy that.

  22. Esteban OCONRenault

Engineer: If you want to do another time lap, we should do two cool-down laps. But if you're happy with that lap, I would also be happy to finish the run. It's your call, though.

Esteban OCON: Yeah, I think we can probably finish it.

  23. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Max is off. Exit turn 14. Max off. Exit turn 14. Yellow. I don't know. No, I don't think so. He's moving. He's moving. Track is clear. We focus on the next lap. I'm not sure what Max is going to do.

  24. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Engineer: All good, Max?

Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, yeah, it's all good.

  25. Pierre GASLYAlphaTauri

Engineer: Ok good job here, box box, watch your mirrors for Latifi, he was nice to us, he's coming on time now

  26. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: S2 only for turn 13 Yeah but I had it

    Charles LECLERC: No?

Engineer: Oh you mean take it off after turn 13 and don't give it for turn 15? That is correct, only 13

  27. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

    Engineer: to your management Affirm

  28. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Daniil KVYAT: There is a lot of traffic on the last corner.

  29. George RUSSELLWilliams

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  30. George RUSSELLWilliams

George RUSSELL: Honestly, what's going on here? It's not qualifying.

  31. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Valtteri BOTTAS: Something in the cockpit is stuck with my left hand, so we need to check this. Left side of the cockpit something is sticking to my hand, so I can't steer to the right.

    Engineer: Affirm.

  32. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

    Engineer: It's

Valtteri BOTTAS: some tape or something, but I don't know if it's for something important.

  33. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: And how are the tires and how is the balance?

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yes, similar to the morning, similar comments with the rear.

  34. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: I get a little bit of vibrations, but they seem quite consistent.

    Engineer: Copy.

  35. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: Okay, now let's see if we can get past Kibunatsu. Use DRS and Overtake when you can.

  36. George RUSSELLWilliams

Engineer: Can we box? Can we box for a flap adjust?

George RUSSELL: Down two and a half.

Engineer: Affirm. Box down two and a half.

  37. Sebastian VETTELFerrari

Sebastian VETTEL: I had quite a lot of vibrations at the end of the last set.

    Engineer: Yeah, we saw that.

  38. Daniil KVYATAlphaTauri

Daniil KVYAT: Big engine misfire, oh dr. Nate, oh dr. Nate

  39. Esteban OCONRenault

Engineer: And Esteban still need to just be careful with that left front at turn four please.

  40. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: I've got vibrations, but I don't know from where they are coming from. I don't have... I don't flat-motive anything.

Engineer: Looks like they are coming from the rear tyres.

  41. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: Carlos, when we fit the hard, I plan to leave the front wing alone and try the car with more aero balance, are you happy with that?

    Carlos SAINZ: Yep!

  42. Carlos SAINZMcLaren

Engineer: The vibrations look better in data now. Vibrations better in data? Yeah, yeah, much better, much better.

  43. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: Vibrations too big now Ok,

    Engineer: let's say box, box

  44. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Daniel RICCIARDO: Pretty similar comments across compounds, it's pretty stable, hovering around phase 3.
