Italian Grand Prix 2021: Race team radio
135 radio messages were recorded during race at the Italian Grand Prix 2021, across 20 drivers. 134 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Daniel RICCIARDO had the most, with 26.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Every message, in the order it happened
Engineer: that's green light in about one minute's time
Max VERSTAPPEN: Radio check. Radio check. This drink again in my mouth with the radio check. Radio loud and clear.
Engineer: Box and pit confirm max. Box, would you like a front wing adjustment?
Max VERSTAPPEN: No, it's ok.
Engineer: Understood, so straight through the pit lane, no immediate hurry in the pit lane.
Pierre GASLY: Okay, everything is okay on the data, yeah? Everything looks okay on the data? No, it's not okay. It's not okay. The throttle is stuck. There is a percentage. It gives 100%. And don't give a **** what the data says. I feel it.
Engineer: Okay, do we have to stop?
Pierre GASLY: Do we have to stop the car? Can you confirm, please? I can't race like this, so I don't know. I can do one more lap if you want, but I just can't race like that.
George RUSSELL: I'm pretty confident something is coming out of the rear brakes out of the ducts, they seem to be very hot
Max VERSTAPPEN: I have blue smoke from the brakes, I think. Look.
Engineer: Ok, just stop in the garage please.
Max VERSTAPPEN: We need coolers.
Engineer: Joki, what do you say about the balance in the last lap? Is it most representative?
Yuki TSUNODA: Yeah, I think it was OK. I failed to understand at some point at turn 8, me to exit. I'm not sure this one is from dirty air, but yeah, we'll see.
Engineer: So, rotation low speed you think is OK?
Yuki TSUNODA: Rotation low speed is fine, yeah, good.
Engineer: OK, I come to see you now.
Engineer: Okay, let's just know please
Pierre GASLY: Doesn't feel right but check
Lewis HAMILTON: Grip was very poor on that tire, particularly on the front.
Engineer: OK, copy.
Pierre GASLY: It's better on this lap
Engineer: Copy that
Charles LECLERC: Maybe guys check the left part of the car, I took a kerb that was quite high out of turn 6, but I think it's fine, but better check.
Engineer: Copy, we will check. Can you let me know which lap you went over that kerb?
Charles LECLERC: Last lap, it wasn't big, but just to check if the floor is good.
Engineer: Copy. Yeah, go ahead.
Engineer: Daniel, radio check. Yep,
Daniel RICCIARDO: radio is good.
Engineer: Yep, loud and clear. Check the drink as well.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, drink's good.
Engineer: OK, so let's talk you through a few things. Track attempt is still 44, so I'm still a little bit up from sprint quality. In terms of front wing we'll probably take that extra click out that we talked about. Then in terms of procedures, same as yesterday, so once the engine is fired up we'll be pit speed limiter on, that will be first gear start, keep the pit speed limiter until you're past pole position, work the tyres on the formation lap, and then it will be recharge off before the burnouts, and three burnouts again from safety car line one.
Engineer: Everyone around us on medium except Hamilton on hard. That's a weird choice from Lewis.
Engineer: Okay Daniel, tyre information. So cars around you are predominantly on medium. We've got hard starters of Hamilton, Cubica, Bottas and Gasly.
Engineer: So crash ahead, crash ahead Exit 05, car is on the left hand side.
Engineer: Man, it's pushed me wide. Copy.
Engineer: BSC deployed Max, dash positive, BSC deployed, dash positive. Stay out, so Hamilton lost position to Norris as well.
Charles LECLERC: Check if I have a puncture. Giovinazzi! Have been a... Have been a kamikaze.
Engineer: So everything is fine and K2 off.
Engineer: And box, Antonio. Box, box.
Antonio GIOVINAZZI: Copy. We
Engineer: change nose, no change. How is the car feeling?
Antonio GIOVINAZZI: I don't know, yes, front wheel is not there, so...
Engineer: So we've got Ricciardo leading Verstappen, Norris ahead 1.4, Leclerc 2.9 behind.
Engineer: Good start Daniel. The order behind you is Verstappen, Lando, Hamilton, Leclerc.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Roger.
Lance STROLL: Aerobalance is a bit low, have a bit of understeer.
Engineer: We could consider right hand toggle for turn 7.
Engineer: We're matching signs in the corners.
Engineer: White H10, position 11. H10, 11.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Really hard to get close.
Engineer: Yep, understood. May just have to wait for an opportunity.
Engineer: And how was the balance? A little bit of everything. Copy that.
Nikita MAZEPIN: Can I go Sox 6?
Engineer: We need to stay Sox 7 if we want to use K1 or Sox 6 for sustainable running but we need Sox 7 to be able to use K1 at the minute
Engineer: How's the balance now, Lance?
Lance STROLL: Yeah, it's understeery, but I'm just lacking a lot of rear grip. It's just the tires are stinking.
Engineer: Increased managing of the surface. Increased managing of the surface.
Engineer: Hamilton is struggling when he gets close we're getting good gaps to the rest of the field keep this up
Engineer: And Lando, Hamilton uses Strat 8 to recharge and then attack.
Lando NORRIS: OK, confirm.
Engineer: And Lewis we're seeing some higher deg on a couple of the medium runners just need to make sure we can make our target
Engineer: and stall is 2.4 guys
Carlos SAINZ: my dash is not showing me the... it's showing me something very strong it's like number 1, number 2, number 3 instead of the shock mark
Engineer: understood yeah we do see that and we are checking and come back to you
Carlos SAINZ: so I cannot control my shock level
Engineer: understood and the shock number is on the bottom left to
Carlos SAINZ: help you yeah but... I need the bar
Engineer: copy, working on it
Max VERSTAPPEN: It's always the same gap, it's just impossible to get close.
Engineer: OK, understood.
Engineer: last lap track limits turn 11
Engineer: Lando, how's the pace? How are the tyres?
Lando NORRIS: Yeah, pace one, pace two. Tyres okay, just struggling with them being so hot.
Lando NORRIS: I'm using a lot of time trying to do this.
Engineer: Understood. We see the same with everyone on the medium. Hamilton has to go long. Ideally, we do plan A, but with plan B target lap.
Daniel RICCIARDO: So far I'd say plan A, plan A at the moment.
Engineer: Copy, copy.
Engineer: He
Sebastian VETTEL: gave me no space on the outside. He pushed me off the track. I
Engineer: think you
Sebastian VETTEL: saw that.
Engineer: 0.9 pace looking good now Daniel pace looking good
Engineer: Well,
Sebastian VETTEL: I could have might as well taken it myself off.
Engineer: Daniel we're thinking plan a target lap
Engineer: So Ricardo at the front, holding 26.6, so similar lap times, and he's managed to keep the staff behind without too much hassle.
Engineer: Copy. So Verstappen, Lando and Hamilton are matching your pace. You're faster than Leclerc and Perez and Kars behind.
Max VERSTAPPEN: We
Engineer: are
Max VERSTAPPEN: on the other side of the slide.
Engineer: Understood, same message from Daniel just now.
Engineer: McQuarrick's last lap at 26.9, Daniel out front doing a 26.5 I will do the plenty Keep on going as we are, this is good
Daniel RICCIARDO: Okay, yeah, taking a bit of a hit.
Engineer: Copy, Daniel. Looks similar across the field. Gap 1.0.
Engineer: And we are thinking of going plan B at the moment, plan B
Carlos SAINZ: Copy, that will work right
Engineer: Understood
Engineer: The Clerks last lap at 26.9. We're chipping away, we're closing in.
Engineer: Pace is super strong, you're matching the leaders.
Engineer: And mode 7, mode 7. I didn't click anything with the overtake, so why is it going lower? We're looking into it, hence the changes.
Engineer: But your lap times are still as good as anyone yep,
Daniel RICCIARDO: I think this is the pace for a bit
Engineer: Okay, and we're looking at target plus 10, target plus 10.
Fernando ALONSO: Copy.
Max VERSTAPPEN: I'll back out
Engineer: understood.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, I'll have more time then I came to my cutting
Engineer: Yeah, don't worry
Daniel RICCIARDO: Okay, I definitely plan on...
Engineer: Bottas has DRS. There's still a way back, but don't fight him too much. We don't want to lose time with him
Engineer: Ocon 1.2 ahead Ocon has a five-second penalty it's Latifi we're racing
Engineer: So Ricciardo is in the pits, Vestapen stayed out, so probably close with Ricciardo on exit.
Engineer: All right, let's have it
Engineer: Okay, that's Sainz ahead. Sainz last lap, 27.5. We need to pass him.
Engineer: Keep the pressure on. It wasn't a super quick stop from McLaren.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, my tyres are f***ed.
Engineer: Strat 12 in pit lane, Strat 12 in pit lane
Engineer: So just follow Ricciardo, three seconds ahead, he's got Sainz ahead, you're racing Sainz.
Engineer: Nice work, Lewis. This is on. Come on, mate.
Engineer: We've come out behind Stroll. Would you be happy with that?
Lando NORRIS: Yes
Engineer: What the **** talk?
Charles LECLERC: Xavi, this has no sense. Subscribe to who? I am alone, I have no one in front. Tell me what I need to do.
Engineer: Push.
Charles LECLERC: I try.
Engineer: Norris ahead of you, Norris ahead Yeah I can see that I'll leave you to it
Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah I just come on the radio whenever it's critical
Engineer: F***
Max VERSTAPPEN: That's what you get where you don't leave the space
Engineer: Okay, so switch off the engine, please, Lewis.
Engineer: Double yellows, turn one. Double yellows, turn one. Verstappen and Hamilton. Double yellows, turn one. Safety car, safety car.
Engineer: So cars behind Daniel are Leclerc, Lando, then Perez. Hamilton and Verstappen crashed and
Daniel RICCIARDO: they are out of the race.
Engineer: Are the tyres OK?
Fernando ALONSO: Yeah, all OK, but yeah, I don't know why the Williams was racing under safety car.
Engineer: She was on pit exit.
Fernando ALONSO: Yeah, exactly. I was on the inside because on the outside there is debris. So he wants to pass on the inside on the grass or what?
Engineer: Yeah, copy that.
Engineer: So this could go for a while.
Esteban OCON: This is not fair the penalty, but
Engineer: same
Esteban OCON: happened to Leclerc in 19, same with Hamilton
Engineer: So keep on working the tires, Checko.
Engineer: Okay, so we're doing a very good job with the tyre temp management at the moment, keep that up. Brake temps all under control as well. We've got a little bit of separation, so you might feel a bit of pulling after the restart for the first couple of brake stabs, but it will come back. We can go back to torque seven, we think, to reset. Just keep a mind on your diff entry and mid switches as well for the first part of this run.
Engineer: Okay Lando, so there's 25 laps to go. We're going to have our chance on the clerk, so we've just got to use our head here. Still a long way to go.
Engineer: Temperature are okay now, keep working on your tyres.
Engineer: And for tyres, check, no concern to push till the end.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Any idea when it will end?
Engineer: I don't have any information yet. They're just showing replays of the accident. There are still double yellows at turn one. Both cars have apparently been moved, Daniel. Both cars seem to have been moved.
Engineer: We're going to have our chance on the clock, so we've just got to use our head here, still a long way to go.
Engineer: We're gonna go on maximum attack
Sergio PEREZ: Norris went out of the truck.
Engineer: Yeah, we saw him.
Engineer: Car behind is Lando.
Engineer: Lando track limits turn 11. That was our second official warning second one
Engineer: Before I touch the car behind, let's get the clerk.
Engineer: Okay, Perez has passed Leclerc as well, so behind it's Lando, then Perez.
Sergio PEREZ: He didn't leave me any room.
Engineer: Lando 0.9
Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, let me know if you think I should keep it close
Engineer: if anything it looks a bit stronger end of life than the medium Hamilton's last lap and Bottas' last laps before the safety car were good
Engineer: Okay, this will be 33 laps complete, 20 laps remaining. Still a long way to go.
Engineer: Now
Valtteri BOTTAS: it's not allowed to go off and then you get a toll from that.
Engineer: If possible, we think we could have a bit more apex speed 6-7 if it's possible
Lando NORRIS: Yeah, I need Daniel to pick up the pace a bit, he's driving too slow
Engineer: Bottas on medium is quick his lap in clear air catching up to Perez 124.8
Engineer: Okay, when you can, can you reset your tyre face, please? Reset tyre face.
Engineer: So with Bottas looking quick we think the best thing is to be as quick as you can to the end of the race and just pull a gap on these cars behind if possible.
Engineer: Use of a take Paris battery is low
Engineer: That's a better lap Daniel, let's have those lap times if you can, that's good.
Engineer: Consider brake balance to protect rears.
Engineer: OK, checker, we've had a five-second penalty for that overtake on the clerk. Aldo's out. We're going to get that five-second gap. And Norris?
Sergio PEREZ: Norris has a penalty as well?
Engineer: Negative. Nothing for Norris yet.
Engineer: And charge 0.9 behind, a bit of K1 to get DRS.
Lando NORRIS: Do you think it's best for us if I stay like this? There I am.
Engineer: Lando, best for us where you are.
Robert KUBICA: I need to recharge battery, which SOC?
Engineer: Go to 10 then, SOC 10 will help.
Engineer: Kibitzer ahead is apparently charging at the moment. I
Sebastian VETTEL: have been doing that for 41 laps.
Engineer: So for better traction out of two recommended keep it tight apex of two and stay out of the wake
Engineer: Safety car window is open. Safety car will be boxed to overtake.
Nikita MAZEPIN: Something happened at the engine.
Engineer: We're checking, we're checking.
Nikita MAZEPIN: losing power every upshift losing power copy
Engineer: copy we'll come back to you stop the car maz stop the car we're safe stop the car pull in we're safe dude pull in we're safe go p1 wait three seconds and then p0 the main pack of cars is five seconds behind you now three they're coming past you now
Engineer: Daniel has been told to try and pull away. Let's go with him.
Lando NORRIS: Yeah, that's much better, don't
Engineer: we?
Engineer: OK, and you ran wide twice in turn 11 now, so watch out for track limits turn 11.
Fernando ALONSO: Copy. Tell me the distance with the stroll, we need to be within 5 seconds. That yellow flag, it was flat out.
Engineer: Understood. So the gap is 2.7.
Engineer: KS Van can we pull out into clean air on the straights please to help cool the car?
Carlos SAINZ: Is this the last lap or not?
Engineer: I don't know. There will be six more after this, six more laps.
Engineer: Oh, we've got, oh, we've got.
Engineer: Okay, this is the last lap, last lap.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Oh
Engineer: Amazing. Strat fire please. Let's go boys! Woo!
Lando NORRIS: Let's go! Vamos! Vamos! Get in there!
Engineer: Yes boys! Strat fire please.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Deep down I knew this was going to come so thanks, thanks for having my back and for anyone who thought I left, I never left, just moved aside for a while, thanks guys.
Engineer: Okay, so just slow in high gear. All right, really good job, Mick. Way to overcome all that and catch back up. Great laps. Did well on that tire.
Mick SCHUMACHER: Copy.
Engineer: And you got fastest lap mate, so that's another bonus point. 27 points from a weekend's not bad.
Audio only, no transcript available for this message.
Engineer: I told you, I told you, we're going to be in a podium. Valtteri, best driver out there of the day, mega, mega, mega pace. And the week. And the week, and the week, not only the day, and the week, Ricky said.
Engineer: Ok Robert, that's it. P14, P14, more charge. You know what, you did a really good job so we can be proud of you. Really good race. McLaren won 1 and 2, Ricciardo Norris and...
Engineer: Ok, Antonio over the line, motor fail, motor fail.
Sebastian VETTEL: Okay, our race was pretty much done after turn five Getting pushed out in six that destroyed it From there. We were just stuck
Engineer: Yeah, copy that and then we had some front end damage from there and then actually after the safety car rear end damage as well So cars not in good shape
Engineer: Yes, boys! Legends! We deserve that. Andrea, I hope you're happy. Well done, boys. Proud of all of you. One, two. Very proud of you. Proud of you. This makes all the hard work and everything our families do to support us as well worth it. Well done. Yeah, it's deserved, guys. Thank you so much. All the hard work from everyone back home in MTC and everyone. We've finally done it. Awesome. Congrats to Daniel as well. Tall, major. All of that side of the garage. Well done, boys. Yeah, congrats to the whole team. There's too many people here who want to pass on their congrats to you as well, mate. Man, great job. Well done. Great job. Man, great job. Well done. Great job. Unbelievable. P1, P2. Well, we have to celebrate tonight, don't we?
Engineer: Okay, second flag, second flag, you go in, go in, pickup rubber, pickup rubber, so you're P11.
Nicholas LATIFI: I think we can be proud of this result, because we did not have a car capable of scoring points, and we should have with both cars, so well done to everyone, that's a good execution of the race. Just obviously very unlucky with the safety car time, but yeah, great job everyone.
Charles LECLERC: And P4, P4, good job. Ah, I mean, I pushed like crazy. Honestly, all the lads were really on it. We got stuck a little bit after the safety car behind the guys and we had quite a bit more pace, but yeah.
Engineer: The
Charles LECLERC: thing is that, yeah, we were quite vulnerable, but it's fine, P4, P6.
Engineer: Good job at the end there, okay we cleared signs, that's what the race was at the end, we cleared signs, so finished P3 on the road, P5 with the penalty. You're the only guy that held off Bottas.
Sergio PEREZ: Yeah but then I had nowhere to go with Charles, it was either that or we would have crashed.
Engineer: Yeah hard luck Checo, that was a good effort today, hard luck with that.
Sergio PEREZ: Thanks mate, shame we lost the podium.
Engineer: Next time.
Engineer: OK Esteban, so well managed at the end, quite a hectic race all that, so we finished P10, they haven't announced if Stroll will get a 5 second penalty, it looks like we'd be just outside that 5 second margin though, about 5.1 in fact, very well done at the end to try and push back up there, very well managed with everything that went on there, well done.
Esteban OCON: Copy that, yeah it doesn't reflect our performance because everything we've done was good,
Engineer: so
Esteban OCON: yeah I'm a bit gutted, but you know, we'll come our way soon.
Engineer: Absolutely, it was always going to be a tricky week for us potentially, so yeah I think we've done well, and well done to you, so make sure you get some fluids on board.
Esteban OCON: Copy that.
Engineer: Well done once again, good job, well managed, and we will see you back on the track. Back in the office. Yeah,
Esteban OCON: copy that, see you shortly.
Engineer: I'm P6, P6.
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, sorry guys, tried my best, but unfortunately this weekend I didn't have a very good feeling. Pull
Engineer: the car, it's a priority. Yeah, copy that, you tried everything. We need to go through, but I think it was a strong race from your side.
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, we need to aim higher than this though.
Engineer: Yes, indeed.
Engineer: Okay checkered flag P9. Great work. That's not bad after Friday.
George RUSSELL: Definitely not bad after Friday. Three out of four races into points. Not bad going eh? Well done guys, very well done. And Daniel Rick, what a man.
Engineer: Yeah that's a 1-2 for them.
George RUSSELL: Nice one, well done guys. They deserve it.
Engineer: Switches are all good. We'll see what happens if anything with Stroll. We finish within five seconds so if there is a penalty then that should help us.
George RUSSELL: Copy, yes sir.
Engineer: And we just need to keep the revs up on the way in and cooling where you can for the PU.
George RUSSELL: Can we get on fuel? I'll just keep the speed up if so. Yeah you're all good, you're all good.
Engineer: Just keep these points ticking over, it's good work. Happy with that one.
George RUSSELL: Absolutely, that was a very good second stint.
Engineer: We
George RUSSELL: got a flat right at the end eh?
Engineer: Took two and a half days.
George RUSSELL: Well we got there at the end. Thank you,
Engineer: thank
George RUSSELL: you, thank
Engineer: you.
Engineer: Checkered flag Lance, checkered flag. That's P7 mate, P7 well done.
Lance STROLL: Yes Brad, well done man. Good job mate. That was a good effort, didn't put a foot wrong there, that was great.
