Miami Grand Prix 2024: Sprint Qualifying team radio

38 radio messages were recorded during sprint qualifying at the Miami Grand Prix 2024, across 18 drivers. 37 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Oscar PIASTRI had the most, with 5.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Pierre GASLY: Just check the tyres to go off track to let the traffic pass.

    Engineer: Copy that, mate.

  2. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Carlos SAINZ: There is one already for sure

    Engineer: That's good

  3. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Taxi's feeling very poor.

  4. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: The Saab are massively in the way, 13, 14, 15.

  5. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: What's the target? Just zero?

Engineer: Zero, maintain front. We're currently P15, 29, 5. And what do you think on the flaps and tools?

Logan SARGEANT: Yeah, we're under flaps mate.

Engineer: Okay, it was a good first lap, let's come together on the next one. Feedback on tools, where do you need most? Where do you need the most to get... Sector 2. Sector 2, so Leclerc pushing within 12.

  6. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Oscar, we're looking at the tyre temperatures, looking at the tyre temperatures. Suggest one more call and then you'll have time for one lap at the end. You're still P2, so suggest one more call.

  7. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

    Engineer: If

Oscar PIASTRI: that's not a penalty, then I don't know what is.

    Engineer: Copy. We saw that.

  8. Valtteri BOTTASKick Sauber

Valtteri BOTTAS: That's too late man, I had no idea.

  9. ZHOU GuanyuKick Sauber

ZHOU Guanyu: Is the LP pushing or what?

    Engineer: Stay. Stay.

ZHOU Guanyu: You tell me next time if somebody's pushing. Yeah, I'll copy. Sorry.

  10. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Oculus, so we'll box box. Don't

Lewis HAMILTON: know why we're so slow still. Are we safe? Safe,

    Engineer: and we are safe.

  11. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: I'm such a dumb

  12. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Engineer: Okay, Niko, you got through.

    Nico HULKENBERG: Oh, thank

Engineer: God, man. It was a messy lap. Yep, we'll put all the pieces together for the next one. Your P15. What lap time? 28.37.

    Nico HULKENBERG: Ouch.

  13. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: On a reminder, every lap counts, so we focus on every lap.

  14. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Lando, whilst you're there, this is making things a bit tighter. Your number is 10 seconds. That's the point you come on throttle, so we might need a bit of margin to that.

  15. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Engineer: We are happy with the brake shape, possibly avoid S1 in 17.

  16. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: That was a good lap, Daniel. Good job. Offset forward. Yeah,

Daniel RICCIARDO: I hit the wall as well. Turned 16, but seems okay.

  17. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: OK, so car still finishing laps, we've got four cars in front, less than half a tenth up the road. So we're very, very close.

Esteban OCON: Yeah, that was a good lap just before second, but I am not ready.

Engineer: Understood, let's see if we can get a little bit more out of the second lap.

  18. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, I hit the wall as well, 10-16, but seems okay.

  19. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: This gap is okay or there are more cars on track?

Engineer: There's some cars behind who've come in the pits as well, so we're good. So we're just making our gap as normal on the way out.

  20. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: So Oscar time to find I think you know with the rear slip management that's predominantly in the traction so it does start from the turn one into two change of direction so we're missing a bit of pace in turn two and then that correction on the exit of eight also hurts us a bit.

  21. Fernando ALONSOAston Martin

Fernando ALONSO: How much positive I can be out of last corner, you think?

Engineer: So you were four last time, so you were four safe last time when we were... So you can be a bit positive. So Ricciardo's just waiting the exit at 17, now he's going. So there's Perez and Leclerc to go.

  22. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: I hit the wall.

  23. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: No, I got nothing, man.

Engineer: Yeah, copy loose, yes, we've been bumped.

  24. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  25. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: And that is the checkered flag. Yeah, sorry guys, I saw there was a ticked off by top 12, so... Yeah, they've just dropped off, you can see. It's a good first sector either way. Okay mate, so... That's good, it looks like P13 from what I can see, so... Copy. P10 time 28.33. So, yeah, not even half a tenth in it. It was close. Still, lots we can play for tomorrow as well. So, stay negative on the delta, sorry, and box now.

Esteban OCON: Copy that, yeah, we know what we have to do. It's going to be hard I think, but it was close to be perfect.

  26. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: Yeah, I was just, uh, let's creep over water in a while, top and def, we're just sliding like high hell.

    Engineer: Understood.

  27. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: One lap confirmed. Yes, one lap confirmed.

  28. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: Okay so gap ahead is six, tyres are all good, we all need a break at the end of the straight. For info Hülkenberg's unused as well.

  29. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And we have the same wind as last run direction and intensity

  30. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Other cars are not finding much time Verstappen 27.6

  31. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

    Engineer: OK, I think that's it. That's P1 Max.

Max VERSTAPPEN: Lol. What happened to the others? This is terrible.

Engineer: Slightly worse changes than you, maybe.

Max VERSTAPPEN: I mean, I'll take it, but yeah.

  32. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Good job, thanks to the guys for that big push after FT1. Only one lap and I know it was a lot of work, even though we didn't touch, to re-control everything. So thank you and tomorrow we push.

  33. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

Engineer: Okay, well, good job, Nico. It was a stroll ran a used and you were 0.1 off a stroll. So, well, it's P10? Yeah, well, there's still a couple of cars, probably P10, but it was really close. That was actually a really good lap. Did Ricardo

    Nico HULKENBERG: run new?

Engineer: That's correct. Ricardo ran new.

  34. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop! P4! What a day! G, G, G, G, G, hey, hey, hey! Oh, yeah, yeah, you mean. I'm boiling. Absolutely boiling. Oh, mates, I'm so pleased for you. I'm so pleased for us here as well. Very good day.

Daniel RICCIARDO: Yeah, wow. Awesome. Awesome. Yeah. It's good. It's good. Thank you, mate. we belong towards the front so happy for everyone

  35. Carlos SAINZFerrari

    Carlos SAINZ: Horrible.

  36. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Oscar PIASTRI: Yeah, sorry about that, that was pretty dreadful, so, yep, I'm somewhat happy with V6, so, yeah,

Engineer: thanks guys. It looks like, it looks like a lot of people were caught out by not finding more grip on the software. I hope my radio message was helpful rather than a distraction.

Oscar PIASTRI: Yep, that means very good, thank you.

  37. Lance STROLLAston Martin

Engineer: OK, so that is P7 in the end, P7. Ah, not too shabby for an old tyre. Not too shabby, no. Save the best for tomorrow's eye.

    Lance STROLL: Yes.

  38. Lando NORRISMcLaren

    Engineer: That's a P9

Lando NORRIS: Yeah, good, huh? Yes,

    Engineer: yep,

Lando NORRIS: I don't need to say Not a good job my car was good. I'll get it back tomorrow
