Gabriel Bortoleto has finished eleventh five times in 2026: at Monaco, Barcelona, Austria, Hungary and Monza. Each time he was the first driver outside the points.
The points he has scored came in two bursts: ninth in Melbourne on Audi's debut, then eighth at Silverstone and eighth again at Spa. He has 10, fourteenth in the championship, in the first season of Audi as a full works team building its own engine. The rookie of 2025, who scored 19 points for Sauber, is now the team's lead scorer.
Twenty-five Japanese Grands Prix have been held since 2000, all at Suzuka except two at Fuji. Pole won seventeen, Max Verstappen won four in a row from 2022, and Kimi Raikkonen won from seventeenth in 2005 with a last-lap pass. Every winner, grid slot and safety car, measured.

The strangest weekend of his year was in Miami. Bortoleto crossed the line eleventh in the sprint, and was then disqualified. The stewards found that his Audi's engine intake air pressure had gone over the limit of 4.8 bar absolute. Audi told the stewards the breach happened on a single lap, because temperatures were higher than expected, but the rules require the car to comply at all times. The decision was published as a stewards' document, one of dozens the FIA publishes every race weekend. In the Grand Prix the next day he started twenty-first and finished twelfth.
His two eighth places came two weeks apart in July. At Silverstone he started eleventh and gained three places. At Spa he started eighth and held it to the flag, and his engineer was delighted:

The points favour Bortoleto, 10 to 7, but the head to head does not. In the nine races both Audis finished, Hulkenberg was ahead five times and Bortoleto four. The difference is in the results that scored: Bortoleto's two eighths and a ninth are worth ten points, Hulkenberg's eighth, ninth and tenth are worth seven. The team's season, both cars side by side, is in Audi's 2026.
Bortoleto won the Formula 3 title in 2023 and Formula 2 in 2024, and stepped up with Sauber in 2025. His rookie season brought 19 points and a best of sixth in Hungary. When Sauber became Audi for 2026 he stayed, and so did Hulkenberg.
Nine rounds remain, starting with Baku on 26 September. Audi are four points behind Haas for seventh in the constructors' championship. The full table is in the 2026 standings.
