Every Las Vegas Grand Prix winner, measured: from a casino car park to the Strip, and three world titles decided
Formula 1 has raced in Las Vegas five times: twice in a Caesars Palace car park in 1981 and 1982, and three times on the Strip since 2023. Three world titles were settled there. Every winner, grid slot, safety car and disqualification, measured.
Three Formula 1 world championships have been decided in Las Vegas: Nelson Piquet's in 1981, Keke Rosberg's in 1982 and Max Verstappen's in 2024. None of them won the race.
Formula 1 has raced in Las Vegas five times. The first two were the Caesars Palace Grand Prix, on a temporary circuit laid out in the hotel's car park. The last three have run down the Strip at night, since 2023. Verstappen has won two of those three, George Russell the other, and in 2025 both McLarens were disqualified after the race. The next one is on Saturday 21 November 2026.

Three races is not a pattern, but one thing is consistent: this is the coldest race of the year. We measured a mean track temperature of 14.1C in qualifying, colder than any other session of the season by more than seven degrees, and cold tyres make the first laps of every stint treacherous. 1981 and 1982: the car park
Caesars Palace built a twisting, flat circuit out of concrete walls in its car park, and drivers disliked it. In 1981 Alan Jones won in what was planned as his last race, and Nelson Piquet finished fifth, exhausted in the heat, to beat Carlos Reutemann to the title by one point. In 1982 Michele Alboreto won his first Grand Prix for Tyrrell, and Keke Rosberg finished fifth to become champion. Formula 1 did not come back to Las Vegas for 41 years.
2023: the return
The first race on the Strip began badly: the opening practice session was stopped after eight minutes when Carlos Sainz's Ferrari hit a loose drain cover. The race was better. Verstappen took a five-second penalty for pushing Charles Leclerc wide at the first corner, served it, and still won. Leclerc passed Perez on the last lap for second.
2024: Russell, and Verstappen's fourth title
Russell won from pole in 2024, with Hamilton second from tenth for a Mercedes one-two. His reaction at the flag:
"VEGAS BABY! WOOO! VEGAS!" Verstappen finished fifth, enough to seal his fourth championship with two races left.
2025: the disqualifications
Verstappen won again in 2025. Norris crossed the line second and Piastri fourth, but both McLarens were disqualified afterwards because the plank under the car had worn below the legal limit, which promoted Russell to second and Antonelli to third. Antonelli had done it from seventeenth on the grid, and with a penalty: his engineer told him during the race that he had been given five seconds for a jump start.
"Okay, Kimi, so we have a five-second penalty for jump start." The disqualifications arrived as stewards' documents hours after the flag, one of dozens the FIA publishes every race weekend. Antonelli's 2026 is measured in Kimi Antonelli's 2026.
