US GP 2026 Preview: Antonelli Can Win the Title in Austin
Kimi Antonelli arrives in Austin 102 points clear with six races left. Win, and have Russell and Hamilton finish low enough, and he is champion on Sunday.
Kimi Antonelli arrives at the Circuit of the Americas 102 points clear with six races left. If he wins on Sunday and two results go his way, he leaves Austin as world champion.
The United States Grand Prix is round 18 of 23, on Sunday 25 October, and the first race since Max Verstappen won at Sepang and Singapore in consecutive weekends. It is a standard weekend with no sprint: three practice sessions, qualifying on Saturday and 56 laps of the 5.513 km circuit on Sunday.
UK clocks go back an hour early on Sunday 25 October, so the race is at 20:00 GMT, the same as UTC. Austin is on CDT, five hours behind UTC.
What Antonelli needs to be champion on Sunday
After Austin there are five races left and no sprints, so 125 points available to any one driver. To be certain of the title on Sunday night, Antonelli has to lead every rival by more than 125.
He leads George Russell by 102, Lewis Hamilton by 111, Max Verstappen by 119 and Charles Leclerc by 125. So the arithmetic is:
Antonelli has to win. Second place gives him 18 points and leaves Russell within range whatever happens.
Russell has to finish tenth or lower. A win takes the lead to 127, so Russell can score one point at most.
Hamilton has to finish fifth or lower. He can score ten points and no more.
Verstappen and Leclerc cannot stop it on their own if Antonelli wins, because neither can then score more than 18.
That is a lot to ask in one afternoon, and the more realistic target is Mexico City a week later or Sao Paulo after that. But Russell has scored two points in the last two weekends, after a power unit failure at Sepang and a crash from the lead of the Singapore sprint, so it is not impossible either. The full table is on our 2026 F1 standings page. For every round after Austin, and how many points he can give away to each rival, see when Antonelli can win the 2026 title.
The fight for second is wide open
Behind Antonelli, five drivers are separated by 37 points: Russell 238, Hamilton 229, Verstappen 221, Leclerc 215 and Lando Norris 201.
Verstappen is the one moving. He had not won a Grand Prix in the first fifteen rounds of 2026. Then he won in the rain at Sepang and from pole in Singapore, taking 58 points from two weekends and climbing from sixth to fourth. Austin suits him: he has won the United States Grand Prix four times, in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025, and last year he did it from pole after winning the sprint as well.
"Another very impressive weekend, Max. Extremely well done," his engineer told him after the flag. Verstappen's reply: "Yeah, well done, mate. Unbelievable weekend. Really, really good. Thank you very much, everyone."
Hamilton has the best record here of anyone, five wins, all of them between 2012 and 2017. He has not won in Austin since, and his Ferrari one-stop faded from podium contention to sixth in Singapore.
What COTA usually produces
Thirteen United States Grands Prix have been held at COTA since 2012. Pole has won six of them, and the lowest grid slot to win was sixth, Verstappen in 2023. The biggest recovery is still Verstappen's in 2018, from eighteenth to second.
It is also one of the calmest circuits of the year for neutralisations. Since 2018 a full safety car has come out in only two races, 2022 and 2024, against Singapore's two virtual safety cars a fortnight ago and its safety car in every race until 2024. The wide run-off means a mistake usually costs time rather than ending in a wall, which makes qualifying and the first stint matter more than they did at Marina Bay.
Austin's results have changed after the flag before
In 2023 Hamilton finished second on the road and Leclerc sixth, and both were disqualified hours later because the plank under their cars had worn below the legal thickness. In 2024 Norris was given five seconds for passing Verstappen off the track and lost third. Both decisions arrived as stewards' documents, not on the timing screen.
With a championship that can be settled on Sunday, the documents matter as much as the result.
