Belgian Grand Prix 2019: Practice 1 team radio
43 radio messages were recorded during practice 1 at the Belgian Grand Prix 2019, across 15 drivers. Carlos SAINZ had the most, with 7.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Every message, in the order it happened
Engineer: Radio check. Radio check. Loud and clear. So nice and easy on the tyres.
Engineer: So, Aero P4 5th gear cruise, please.
Engineer: Okay, can we do DRS check please, DRS check and radio check as well.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Yep, radio is good.
Engineer: Laune clear for me as well, turn 4.
Engineer: Atlanta positioning wise you were ten long and five to your left
Engineer: And a start after the exit on the right-hand side, and 5.20.
Engineer: And confirming we are Boxerslap? Yeah, confirming Boxerslap
Engineer: OK, so track is clear, Hamilton is slow at turn 10, so we may get a flag, but for now, switches are good. And rear temps are OK, front's on a little bit of a low side, but it's go, push, go, push.
Engineer: So you have a lot of margin to push on the tires, we expect a strong outlap.
Engineer: and HPP 5 set position 10
Engineer: Other cars have been struggling at the exit of Turn 1. Kubica spun there, Kvyat spun there. So that oversteer you had is common with a lot of other cars.
Valtteri BOTTAS: There's a huge amount of understeer in the car in high speed, so I
Engineer: think
Valtteri BOTTAS: I'm going to learn from the next step how maybe
Engineer: we can stop for a flap. Yes, let's stop for a flap a chance. Plus
Valtteri BOTTAS: three on the flap.
Engineer: Carlos, how's the front wing?
Carlos SAINZ: I would say a bit overbalanced but a tiny bit, no major changes needed.
Engineer: So let's leave it where it is, one more timed lap. How
Carlos SAINZ: many people on the softs or the mids?
Engineer: It's roughly 50-50, roughly 50-50. So Perez on medium 147.8, Stroll medium 147.4 and Bottas medium 147.5. Other quick cars on soft.
Engineer: and we need multifunction mix position 3, mix position 3
Engineer: And continue to drive to the Delta, the virtual safety car is still deployed. It says I'm 22 seconds off my Delta, so what number do I need to stick to? Currently I think you're very safe to the Delta, I think you're very safe. But am I 24 seconds safe? It would appear so yes, I would keep driving at a reduced speed, so officially we need to be 40% slower. The virtual safety car is now ending, virtual safety car is ending.
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, no debris left on track, so we can go.
Engineer: Copy. Virtual safety car ending, track clear. So good warm-up on brakes. Cars should be in phase with you.
Engineer: And Nico, please could you press the OK button twice, please. Press the OK button twice. And confirming we have time for one timed lap.
Engineer: OK, that's put you P1 at the moment, BOTAS, similar time, in terms of track time, that's putting a 47.0, but that's on the medium, P2 is still Ricardo, 46.8, you were purple in sector 2 and sector 3, and we are 2.3 down in sector 1.
Engineer: And please could we have an aero P4 5th gear cruise up to turn 5.
Engineer: Okay, focus on your marks, it is a practice pit stop, and then kill the engine.
Engineer: Ok, Carlos will be the only car on track.
Engineer: Ok Carlos, that's P2, recharge on is good
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah quite slow down the straights there
Engineer: A bit more front brake warm-up.
Engineer: For turn 8 suggest either left hand toggle or test third toggle turn 8 left hand or third toggle
Engineer: So the temperatures are looking low at the moment
Lewis HAMILTON: Thank you, sign as soon as possible, please keep the temperature
Engineer: Copy Lewis, we're in State Bravair
Engineer: OK, and how was the balance?
Daniel RICCIARDO: It was pretty similar to the first run, not a whole lot of difference, I think some areas it had improved, so I wouldn't say any worse.
Engineer: Yeah, OK, understood.
Engineer: Where am I losing? Losing braking for 5 and 7 and also 8 braking 5 7 8 and also apex speed 12 13
Sebastian VETTEL: Just as a remark, this tire set has some vibrations straight away.
Engineer: Ok, copy.
Engineer: I
Romain GROSJEAN: don't know what's going on in turn one of the braking it's all good and suddenly the front right decides to lock. Watch for the clear, watch for the clear.
Engineer: Okay,
Romain GROSJEAN: yes, we're looking, we're looking. Oh, come on!
Engineer: The
Lewis HAMILTON: front tyre's not in the window.
Engineer: Proper push in lap. You
Sebastian VETTEL: mean proper mode raise?
Engineer: Yeah, mode raise and push please.
Engineer: So that was front tyre temperatures dropped too much and front brake temperatures too cold. So we just need to maintain more brake temperature if we can because that will keep the tyre and the brakes.
Engineer: And use the overtake out of turn 4, non-DRS on the in-lap. OK, that's fine from our side. And go in-lap, track is clear around you.
Lando NORRIS: Happy to box.
Engineer: Yep, okay. If we box now there's more time to do a change. We do have time though if you want to do another time lap or open the lap.
Lando NORRIS: Nah, I'll go for one more. I'll just start the lap and then box at the end.
Engineer: Okay, understood.
Engineer: Hamilton pushing, leaving turn 1 now, Hamilton fast, it's 5 behind, so Hamilton fast 5 behind.
Engineer: Torque 1, back to Torque 1, and we need good work on the front tires and brakes again Keep working on your front tires Do
Pierre GASLY: I have anyone in front of
Engineer: me? Please repeat, please repeat
Pierre GASLY: Is there any car in front of me?
Engineer: Position is good, position is good, both has 14 in front
Engineer: And how am I treating these laps? Like a power car or a push? You'll push initially to get the temps up and then I'll let you know. Copy.
Engineer: The track temp is slightly coming up a couple of degrees wind is still the same as before
Engineer: Top right modifier, please, Nico. Top right modifier.
Engineer: Lance all you'll get is two timed in a row so it will be two timed laps but they'll be in a row so don't back off after the first one keep pushing and do a second one stay ahead of Hamilton stay ahead of Hamilton Hamilton's out lap and stay ahead of him he could be high fuel so stay ahead of him
Engineer: Ignore cool car warnings
Engineer: We stay mode race, 110kph available.
Engineer: So keep some temperature in the brakes, we're going to practice speed entry.
