Belgian Grand Prix 2019: Qualifying team radio

23 radio messages were recorded during qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix 2019, across 14 drivers. Lewis HAMILTON had the most, with 5.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Alexander ALBONRed Bull

Engineer: So box, Alex box, there could be oil after turn 15, there is a car stopped after turn 17, potentially with an oil fire, so keep an eye out for oil on track after turn 15.

  2. Lance STROLLRacing Point

Lance STROLL: Do you want me to minimise temperature on this lap?

Engineer: No, just drive normal, so Kate. Just drive to the delta.

  3. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Red flag, red flag, follow the delta, there is mode charge, mode charge and box.

  4. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: We're first this weekend, yeah? So we

Engineer: will hold at the garage.

  5. Daniel RICCIARDORenault

Engineer: Think about front tires they had a bit more time out of blankets now, so make sure the fronts are up to temp

  6. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Engineer: Ok Kimi, more charge, box and we need a quick in-lap please, quick in-lap.

  7. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Is the wind picking up compared to the last practice? Because I feel like the rear is a bit more loose.

    Engineer: Engine 4, position 1. Engine 4, position 1.

  8. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So compared to Valtteri minimum speed turn 8 and braking turn 18

  9. Romain GROSJEANHaas

Engineer: Would you like a balance adjust for the next run? I

    Romain GROSJEAN: would say no.

Engineer: Understood and box from out box.

  10. Antonio GIOVINAZZIAlfa Romeo

Engineer: What's the problem Antonio? I

Antonio GIOVINAZZI: don't know from the engine.

  11. Daniil KVYATToro Rosso

Daniil KVYAT: What the f***, come on, what the f*** joke of a session

  12. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Recharge on the gun right? Yep,

Engineer: that's correct recharge on and we'll have engine five position two, please engine five position two

  13. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: OK Nico, we are currently P10 but Vettel's going to pip us so we're going to be P11 with one more run.

Nico HULKENBERG: What is the gap at the moment? What lap time was Danny?

Engineer: Danny did a 44.6. So you have half a second to make up. It was turn 8 into 9 and turn 12.13.

Nico HULKENBERG: Yeah, 8 there was a lock up. I went a bit wide but 12.13 I keep being washed wide when I'm in the steer.

Engineer: Copy that Nico. Remember the next set of tyres is going to be brand new. That set had done a lap so it could be a bit of time in that.

  14. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Lewis HAMILTON: I didn't hear it tell us to go, so I wasn't ready.

  15. Kimi RAIKKONENAlfa Romeo

Kimi RAIKKONEN: Yeah, this lap has gone.

Engineer: Okay, let's abort it. So on the back straight, go to mode charge now.

  16. Valtteri BOTTASMercedes

Engineer: It was purple sector two, good recovery. So this is your start set for the race, not correction, it was the previous one.

  17. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Charles LECLERC: Timing is easy or what?

Engineer: We have 10 second margin at the moment. I will keep you updated through the lab

  18. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: There's barely any crap on these

    Lewis HAMILTON: tyres.

  19. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Thank you Lewis, that's a P3 just pipped by Vettel, 15 one thousandths of a second It's been a great recovery mate, real solid quality after a difficult morning

Lewis HAMILTON: That's all in the prep man, that's all in the prep

  20. Nico HULKENBERGRenault

Engineer: That was fantastic, Nico. Absolutely brilliant. But save as much fuel as you can whilst respecting that delta. You have to be negative. You are P7, Nico. Absolutely superb, mate.

Nico HULKENBERG: No, not really, mate. I'll lose some time in the final corner again.

Engineer: Copy that, Nico. But from where we started this session, I'm really chuffed with that. It's great to have something more that we could have done better. Very happy. Well done. So saving fuel as much as you can with the big lifts, but staying negative on the delta.

  21. Sergio PEREZRacing Point

Engineer: OK, checker, so you are negative, but just minus 3. Run switch delta, stay negative. Run switch delta, stay negative.

  22. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay Kev, we ended up P10, but it's really good to get through to Q3. Yeah, didn't look like we could find much on that last lap, but really good job, especially where we were yesterday. Okay, so great job, P10, happy with that, good job on the Q3.

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Yeah, good job guys.

Engineer: Okay, so you're good on your delta time, just negative is good for us, just barely negative.

  23. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: Okay, Kev, we ended up P10, but it's really good to get through to Q3. Yeah, didn't look like we could find much on that last lap, but really good job, especially where we were yesterday, okay? So, great job, P10. Happy with that. Good job on the Q3.

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Yeah, good job, guys.
