Spanish Grand Prix 2019: Practice 2 team radio
49 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the Spanish Grand Prix 2019, across 18 drivers. 48 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Daniel RICCIARDO had the most, with 6.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Every message, in the order it happened
Engineer: Mode push, mode push.
Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Quite
Engineer: a bit of understeer. Yeah, okay, that's what we were thinking. So I think entry 22, diff 22 for the next lap and we'll look at other tools.
Kevin MAGNUSSEN: Torque?
Engineer: Yeah, torque is fine, you could do a step of torque as well. And also we don't have any rear locking so you could try brake balance rearward. So yeah, you do all three of those, they're all reasonable steps.
Engineer: Okay, from your side Robert. Yeah,
Robert KUBICA: okay, I spin. I have cold tires and I spin on the last corner. So I'm in the pit lane, I go pass by and I go out again.
Engineer: Okay, copy that.
Audio only, no transcript available for this message.
Nico HULKENBERG: Yeah, like now I go to scenario 8, but at this blade the dash says scenario 14, one of them examples.
Engineer: Copy that Niko, it's showing you the recharge on selection at the moment for some reason, don't fully understand why.
Nico HULKENBERG: It's been like that for a while actually.
Engineer: Okay, copy.
Engineer: Consider diff open. Diff open turns four and five.
Lando NORRIS: Scenario 5 is correct.
Engineer: Yep, that's correct, Scenario 5 is good. And there's a little bit to be had braking Turn 1, and just watch how wide you go Turn 13.
Carlos SAINZ: OK, I need to box. I broke the right hand clutch paddle, when you need it.
Engineer: Copy. I
Carlos SAINZ: mean, I could run, but I cannot find it, so I don't know where it is in
Engineer: the
Carlos SAINZ: cockpit.
Engineer: OK, copy.
Engineer: You can take a second cooldown lap if you think is necessary, so your purple Sector 2 and Sector 3. I'll need
Valtteri BOTTAS: another cooldown lap.
Engineer: Yeah, go for it.
Engineer: So Lewis, compared to Leclerc on the hard tyre, so just down the tenth sector one but up a tenth and a half sector two. The main losses to Leclerc look to be just on straights.
Alexander ALBON: OK, uh, balance wise, it felt like now I'm getting even more disconnected to the car from low speed to high speed, so on that last push it felt like I had enough room to stay at high speed.
Engineer: And just a reminder, if you're going straight into turn one or two, there's the bollard there. And you can try a step rearwards on brake balance for turn one.
Engineer: OK, that's good, we'll take the slow lap, so rear's overheating, so target plus 40 on go out lap, go out lap plus 40, we can afford to drop the front as well.
Charles LECLERC: Where am I losing?
Engineer: We are losing 2 and 3 and 13
Alexander ALBON: I think we still have that problem with the brakes, it seems like as soon as they get cold, when I brake, the car turns there. Yeah, I can confirm that, it's still there. But yeah, balance wise, so as I said before, medium speed, car feels more connected.
Engineer: Checker we'll do two cool laps, we'll do two cool laps, that'll help us with charge as well as tyres.
Engineer: okay Carlos Vettel ahead is showing as being on a new soft but he's already run two sets this session Vettel could well be high fuel
Engineer: What's the limitation, Dani?
Daniil KVYAT: Yeah, a bit of snaps, like unexpected snaps in turn 7, and a bit in turn 12, kind of rear is a bit stepping out sometimes.
Engineer: OK Lewis, so it looks like the clerk went for a double call and then managed to improve on his time, so let's do that, go for a double call down You've got KVAT behind 12 seconds
Lewis HAMILTON: I'll do a drive through
Engineer: I need more wing OK, copy, let us know how much
Lewis HAMILTON: 2 holes
Engineer: OK, copy
Max VERSTAPPEN: I lost power suddenly, it's going now but I was accelerating and it was not well with the pedal but it was not accelerating.
Engineer: Okay standby, happy for you to continue at this stage, I'll keep you posted.
Engineer: so tyre temperatures are pretty much good where they are now a hundred front so a good break into turn 10 to maintain brake temp
Engineer: Try to drive us on Sunday, before the race. Yeah, yeah.
Engineer: And Lando we suggest trying the left hand toggle in turn 5 and turn 7. That's left hand toggle turn 5, turn 7.
Engineer: For reference, Nico, McLaren started their first time-lapse slightly slower, around about 24.0, and are now mid to high 23s.
Engineer: So Nico's lap times were 23.5 and he had front graining after about four laps.
Engineer: So Lance we should get 8 on this tyre and 13 on the next tyre. 8 and 13. Pit stop in between.
Engineer: And we need multifunction DO position 4, DO position 4, Sebastian 22.8, same compound.
Engineer: And target lap time 22.8, 22.8
Engineer: Just think about throttle application before the first or second shift.
Engineer: Clutch position 1% deep.
Engineer: Clutch position was deep, 2%
Lewis HAMILTON: Yeah, that's deliberate, there's
Engineer: a
Lewis HAMILTON: lot of grip
Engineer: OK, copy
George RUSSELL: Still struggling entry of one rear instability
Engineer: Ok Kimi, your brakes are too hot, so either we move the brake balance reward or we start some lift and coast.
Kimi RAIKKONEN: Is there something we can remove? First stop.
Engineer: Ok Kimi, we will box this lap.
Daniel RICCIARDO: Balance is fairly consistent at the moment, both axles fairly even.
Engineer: OK, understood.
Engineer: Carlos this is still looking strong the Haas cars currently are around 124 our dag looks good
George RUSSELL: Like this snap there entry of four. This is what I'm feeling everywhere I've got nothing guys on the rear entry. I'm doing everything with tools and I've still got instability
Engineer: Copy that. Stand by. We'll look to come down on the wing for the next set
Daniel RICCIARDO: What's
Engineer: the
Daniel RICCIARDO: medium pace at the moment?
Engineer: Currently I only see Vettel on the mediums, the rest is also just doing outlaps, I'll keep you updated. So for info Vettel was doing 23.2 on the soft and is now doing 22.5 on the mediums.
Engineer: Nico, could we have PU13 position 4 please?
Engineer: Okay, so for pace update Fiat is doing 22.4 22.5 on the mediums
Max VERSTAPPEN: It's still the same, I try all
Engineer: the things, but the corner is the same problem. Display 11, display 11, position 5, that's a more stable push toggle for that sector.
Engineer: Just do your thing. Two more laps, two more laps. Ricciardo on fresh C2 tyres.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Struggling a lot on entry to mid-corner.
Engineer: Understood, just track it with the overrun if you can.
Engineer: OK, give me box, box. OK, we will not do the change in the pit stop. It takes too long, so stop on the marks. We will pull you in the garage and change the brake. Pulling. And we need the brake. We will just put the car back in the garage and we believe we have some debris on the brake duct, so we need to investigate. If
Kimi RAIKKONEN: we go out with the SM?
Engineer: We will go out on medium the next set, if
Kimi RAIKKONEN: that's OK. Yeah, but we need to add on this, we would have needed one.
Engineer: On this set you mean, if we are going out again?
Kimi RAIKKONEN: Yeah, just to help the high speed a bit.
Engineer: Okay, so pace update, so Kviat is doing about 22.7, Magnussen 22.8 on the mediums.
Engineer: Struggling.
Lewis HAMILTON: Yeah, something feels wrong.
Engineer: Yeah, looks like we're having poor torque following on overrun, so if we go HPP 3 to 1.
Engineer: We're just going to go into a fast, slow, fast sequence, Nico. So the next lap will be Scenario 8, please. Scenario 8.
Engineer: We can go back to mode push now, back to mode push.
Engineer: And that is the chequered flag, so we are boxers lap, you can push on the in-lap if you like.
Engineer: I
Nico HULKENBERG: feel on the hard that the rear is quite poor, especially into the low speed. The stability is very poor, a lot of really big slides into the low speed.
