Spanish Grand Prix 2019: Race team radio
99 radio messages were recorded during race at the Spanish Grand Prix 2019, across 17 drivers. 92 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. Lewis HAMILTON had the most, with 19.
These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Engineer: 40, 40 seconds.
Engineer: OK, don't break traction in the pit lane. Session starts in 45 seconds.
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, quite a lot of cars in front of me.
Engineer: Let me know on temperatures. 20 seconds to go until the light. OK, that should be a green light. Temperatures are good for another minute.
Audio only, no transcript available for this message.
Engineer: So 5.5 and a start from the end. These tyres have six laps on, just two times. That's the tyre for quality one.
Lewis HAMILTON: Vettel has just been driving really dangerously in this pit entry, to then do burnouts to the line. Lewis has spotted that, I'll be on to him. Crash into him.
Engineer: OK, cool the brakes from there, Max, cool the brakes from there, to the grid. Track is clear behind, it's on the exit of 16, we have mode 12, click the overtake end, 3 ramps please, 3 ramps. And you're on the right hand side of the grid today, right hand side.
Engineer: and cool down the car if you can cool down the car we need you to maximize full throttle if you can maximize full throttle
Engineer: OK, and recharge on please, recharge on, and try to cool the car, and you're going to the grid now.
Daniel RICCIARDO: OK, understood, yeah so, it got more on the nose, through those lamps.
Engineer: Yeah, agreed on that. OK, so at the back of the grid, switch to P1, and stay in P1 please.
Engineer: OK Niku, are you happy with the front wing, or would you like us to add some more, or remove some more?
Nico HULKENBERG: Feels quite strong, the front in high speed, quite sharp on the entries.
Engineer: OK Kimi, box box, in the pitlane we need multi B, clutch, 8 please
Engineer: OK, Kevin, you can go to the grid, just try your drink. When you... OK,
Kevin MAGNUSSEN: going to the grid. Cool.
Engineer: And then when you arrive there, after you go to P1, wait three seconds, and this week we'd like you to go to P0. So normally you stay in P1, this time go to P0 when you arrive on the grid after P1.
Engineer: Start was good. Clutch drop slightly too deep, but otherwise okay. Gear change was good, and remember you have Funk 4 if you want to try it.
Engineer: How is front flap? How is the front flap? It's good. All good. Copy. Bebow 5, bebow 5, and 2 clicks rearwards on your offset, minus 2 clicks on offset to become minus 4.
Lewis HAMILTON: Just keep an eye on that MAGIC for me because I may forget to switch it off when I do use it.
Engineer: Affirm, we'll keep on to that.
Lewis HAMILTON: Is that last start on target?
Engineer: It was about 1% deep lose but we seem to have sufficient margin.
Engineer: All okay with the car Alex?
Alexander ALBON: Yeah, all okay. I feel like we're maybe a little bit too neutral in high speed But car feels good Copy
Engineer: that, we have a chat on the grid, see you there
George RUSSELL: How are our temps?
Engineer: Yep, we're all good so far. Can
George RUSSELL: I push in sector 3 on the end of that lap?
Engineer: Yep, very firm. You can push at the end of this lap in sector 3 or so, but not on the last one. Can
George RUSSELL: I hold it on the clutch in first gear? I'd prefer to go down to neutral, very busy here.
Engineer: Okay, so let's go laps to grid now, push until exit 9, and then max calling from exit 9.
George RUSSELL: Repeat that.
Engineer: You can push until exit 10-9, and then max calling, and go to grid.
Engineer: OK George, so balance from my side looked reasonable as well, so I'd agree with what you were saying there on the start. So the final start, the initial drop was quite good, but then you just dropped the clutch too far. And on all three you just need to watch the throttle pedal as well, so you're just starting to drop that pedal as you drop the clutch, and you just need to try and hold it as constant as you can.
George RUSSELL: When you say drop it, you mean putting less throttle in?
Engineer: So as the car starts to move, you're coming off the pedal a little bit. So if you're trying to compensate for that, you just need to go a little bit further.
Lewis HAMILTON: Feels hotter than usual now.
Engineer: Yeah, I haven't seen much of the sun this weekend, but yeah, I think it's just sort of tracking FP2 reasonably well.
Engineer: So, if the rear slips are a bit high in formation, you can still go to torque 8, that's still safe. But remember, from lap 2 or 3, to use the yellow button and white button to cover, to protect the fronts. Ok, copy. I think the front slips were not too high, no? On this lap. Negative, they were very, very low. But I expect they will grow up by lap 1 and 2. So, stay ready to use the white button, especially if you're in traffic, white and then yellow for corner 5 and 4.
Engineer: 5th speed limiter should be on, and recharge should be on. After the engine is fired up, it will be 5th speed limiter on, and then it will be a first gear start for the formation lap. Remember, don't get spooked by this formation lap start, it will be better on the race part. Your procedures were very good, so keep doing that. Coming out of the last corner, recharge off, and there will be 5 burnouts from the exit of turn 60.
Engineer: Do
Lewis HAMILTON: you think the grip on here is going to be worse than at the end of that pitlane?
Engineer: Yeah, ever so slightly, but there shouldn't be a huge difference.
Lewis HAMILTON: The
Engineer: grip
Lewis HAMILTON: at the end of the pitlane was pretty weak.
Engineer: Yeah Lewis, the end of pitlane location was still giving us about 2% margin.
Engineer: And loose for the formation lap just remember this girl with the green flag it's purely symbolic just still go off the lights
Lewis HAMILTON: What do we do, Wing?
Engineer: Took that extra hole out.
Engineer: do
Lewis HAMILTON: you know what they've done the other side I
Engineer: think Valtteri's just come down half from where he went on laps to grid so
Lewis HAMILTON: that's two different two holes different to us
Engineer: yeah I think Ricky was keen to go further but Valtteri wanted to stick
Engineer: Okay, let's go.
Sebastian VETTEL: Quite a bit of a flat spot front right.
Engineer: All right, so focus on that left rear, settle down into liftoffs, and you've got Seb behind and Leclerc behind him.
Engineer: Yeah, yeah, we don't see any damage so keep pushing
Engineer: So Perez is 1.1 behind, so he doesn't have DRS on you.
Engineer: Lewis, can you go HPP shift position 4, shift position 4, gap to Valtteri 1.6, last lap 23.0.
Engineer: You can go to deg switch 1, deg 1, brake balance 1, click forward to help rear locking.
Engineer: Okay Max, so gap behind to Vettel, two seconds, start to think about your gap ahead to Bottas to look after your tyres. Just make sure you've got a nice stable balance in three, nine, four, you're doing a good job at the moment, very good.
Engineer: Ricciardo, close this time, half a second
Carlos SAINZ: Yeah, I have no pace, I don't know why
Engineer: 1.6 second gap to Leclerc. Think about what you need for tyres. Grosjean 2.4 behind.
Engineer: Scenario 3 Nico, scenario 3, save the performance for later.
Engineer: Thank you Lewis, doing a good job, just keep building the gap, gap to Verstappen P3 4.2, Valtteri 2.4, think of that div magic again.
Engineer: Sector 3 still the weakest part, gap ahead 3 seconds
Engineer: And in the straight, multifunction, spark, position 9, spark, position 9, charge with DRS behind, 0.8, need to push more, Vestapen 22, 9.
Engineer: Think about your tyres in turn 3 and turn 9. Think about saving your tyres a bit more, turn 3, turn 9.
Sebastian VETTEL: Copy, I'm hanging on as good as I can with these vibrations They are pain in the arse.
Engineer: You
Sebastian VETTEL: can go by now on this main straight Tell him that
Engineer: And
Sebastian VETTEL: now look for me for pitting as soon as you can Even in traffic, I don't care. Better than these tyres
Engineer: Copy, we are on it
Sebastian VETTEL: Do you have a gap?
Engineer: Not yet, not yet.
Sebastian VETTEL: You should find one then. I don't care if it's traffic.
Sebastian VETTEL: Hit me when you can.
Engineer: Okay, copy.
Engineer: Gap to Valtteri, 4.2, last lap, 22.2
Engineer: Carlos, last lap you were the fastest of the midfield cars, fastest car up to P7, everyone's struggling out there, you're doing well.
Engineer: Gap to Ricciardo now 1.9 this is good Carlos you've looked after the tyres better than him we're in good shape now
Lewis HAMILTON: Rizzo, overheat
Engineer: Copy, possibly a function of traffic
Engineer: And gap ahead to Luis, 7 seconds.
Engineer: Okay, so Leclerc has yet to pit. His last lap was a 23.5. So focus on managing that rear left.
Audio only, no transcript available for this message.
Engineer: Ok Nico, we need to note about another 20 laps on these tyres.
Nico HULKENBERG: I think that's very ambitious.
Engineer: Pace is excellent Nico, keep looking after that left front.
Engineer: and Lando Stroll pitted onto the soft that means they're doing a two-stop
Engineer: Leclerc on the base, Leclerc base tyre, so looking like a one-stop.
Engineer: so watch for the stop and exit, he will be behind you
Engineer: Race update, car behind Hülkenberg on stint 1, see two tyres, 12 seconds behind.
Max VERSTAPPEN: It's
Engineer: a
Max VERSTAPPEN: wind increasing
Engineer: It is looking like it's become a little bit more variable more gusts as you come through turn seven More and more of a tailwind through that corner
Engineer: Gulloos I'm sure you're aware last lap was rear left limited, just think about the management for that, so 38 laps remaining, captain Valtteri 10.4
Engineer: Consider diff and brake balance to help front left slips. Help front left slips 5, 10, 14.
Engineer: If you've got understeer high speed go down on diff high speed
Engineer: and Carlos just keep an eye on the dash there's not much fuel saving to do but it's better to do it while the tires are fresh
Lewis HAMILTON: Time behind
Engineer: Valtteri 21.7
Lewis HAMILTON: Leave me updated man
Engineer: And Gap to Valtteri at 8.8, last lap was a 22.7, that was with traffic Did
Lewis HAMILTON: I see a rubber on my left left, my old tyres?
Engineer: So Rear Left Limited, down to zero
Engineer: If we are stopping again, we drop seven seconds behind him, we need to overtake him, and Verstappen on track. So, Ware was critical on the first set.
Engineer: And let Sebastian buy, let Sebastian buy. He's in a different strategy.
Charles LECLERC: Yeah, but I didn't want to race like this.
Lewis HAMILTON: Just like these tires could be a stretch
Engineer: The player's last lap was a 23-0.
Max VERSTAPPEN: No way he's going to the end.
Audio only, no transcript available for this message.
Engineer: We are faster. Right now, where are we?
Sebastian VETTEL: And how are the gaps?
Engineer: We are 13 seconds behind Charles.
Sebastian VETTEL: How long was the last in? It
Engineer: was 20 laps, 20 laps.
Engineer: Okay Lando, do you have any damage? Do you have any damage?
Lando NORRIS: I'm sorry guys, I'm out.
Engineer: Can you bring the car back? Can you bring the car back?
Lando NORRIS: No I can't, I'm sorry guys.
Lance STROLL: Copy
Engineer: that mate. State alpha, car is state alpha so you can just get out of it normally. Safety car has been deployed.
Engineer: and we need mode raise, mode raise, K2 on
Lewis HAMILTON: There's a lot of gravel there.
Engineer: Yeah, copy.
Lewis HAMILTON: Safety guard's going way too slow.
Engineer: Carlos, if we fit a soft tyre, would you want one turn up?
Carlos SAINZ: No, the car is super neutral mate. I mean, it feels like we went up on out of balance on the pit stop and it's not what I needed.
Engineer: Copy, so we went down, we'll just leave the front wing where it is.
Engineer: We
Sebastian VETTEL: have another chance, thinking about this stuff, how many cars we lose position. Stay
Engineer: out,
Sebastian VETTEL: stay
Engineer: out, one place.
Sebastian VETTEL: We have another chance. Thinking about this stuff. How many cars we lose position. Stay out, stay
Engineer: out.
Engineer: OK Nico, you're about 75, front and rear, so recommend doing some warming if possible.
Engineer: So just think about rear brake temperatures, front calipers are getting quite warm and rear brakes are stone cold.
Max VERSTAPPEN: Can you let me know what is the power at the restart?
Engineer: Yep, we will be in at the time we'll switch to mode 6 and we'll have a look at the boost button, click the boost. So we'll be in mode 6 and boost button.
Engineer: So all the lap cars now are through, just a few reminders for the restart, we want a clean restart, it will be strat 5, remember brake balance 14.1
Engineer: Just a few reminders for the restart, we want a clean restart, it will be strat 5, remember brake balance 4, turn 1.
Engineer: Fastest lap will be early in the stinked
Daniel RICCIARDO: Only 10 points if you're really free. We're just losing time.
Engineer: OK, understood.
Engineer: Mode attack defense we need to hold station for now mate hold station We just need to calm down. We just need to calm down if you do it has to be clean
Engineer: That's great job Carlos great job. Let's go
Lewis HAMILTON: How many laps?
Engineer: So it will be 5 when you cross the line, and diff magic
Engineer: Grosjean is struggling with tyres, let's go get that point.
Engineer: Don't challenge the car too much in entry turn 5 front locking coming from aggressive turning
Engineer: Two more laps, two more laps. Come on Alex, we can get him.
Engineer: Two laps to go. Two laps. Excellent laps. These are .4 quicker than signs behind.
Engineer: Last time dude, last time.
Engineer: Get in there Lewis! What a race drive that was. Awesome day, awesome day in the seat there mate. Fantastic start as well. So yeah, Mad Dog, great work.
Engineer: Top job, Valtteri. Another strong weekend. Top job, Valtteri. Another strong weekend. Fifth consecutive 1-2 for Mercedes. No better way to say goodbye to Dr. Z.
Engineer: Yes, Carlos, get in. P8, great job, mate.
Carlos SAINZ: Ha, ha, ha. Oh, that was fun. We finished the race P8 with no pace. Oh, that was a tough one, guys. But well executed. We still score points when we don't have pace, so... Bravo, bravo!
Engineer: What up Max, that's P3 Really well done, drove the socks off it
Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, it was not bad, the pace was quite good I think
Engineer: Yeah, he worked extremely hard for that, he deserved that podium today, nice job Yeah, well done mate, you were like a metronome today, so consistent, really really impressive, well done
Max VERSTAPPEN: Yeah, and good points again, so happy with that
