Dutch Grand Prix 2024: Practice 2 team radio

67 radio messages were recorded during practice 2 at the Dutch Grand Prix 2024, across 17 drivers. 65 of them have a transcript; the rest are audio only. George RUSSELL had the most, with 15.

These are transcripts of real team radio audio, produced by speech recognition and presented as an archive rather than as edited prose. Radio is clipped and noisy, so wording can be imperfect. Each message is attributed to the driver or their engineer, and the original audio is playable in the archive.

Who was on the radio

Every message, in the order it happened

  1. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: OK, PO, just 50 seconds to go, 5-0.

  2. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Engineer: New brakes here. Yeah, new brakes, confirm, all clear on the main straight.

  3. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Oscar PIASTRI: I think a box for a new helmet is visor is completely, something is completely wrong with this visor. Okay. Basically can't see.

    Engineer: Copy.

  4. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: No immediate threats behind. How's the bounce?

Sergio PEREZ: Lacking a bit of front end

    Engineer: in

Sergio PEREZ: the high speed Turn 9 very difficult on tip-in with the wind.

Engineer: Copy. Do you want a flap adjust?

Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, let's go up on flap a bit.

Engineer: How many clicks? How much flap would you like?

Sergio PEREZ: Yeah, let's try two clicks.

    Engineer: Up two, confirm.

Sergio PEREZ: Have a look on how we can stabilize 9 and 10.

  5. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Is that the best range?

    Engineer: Yeah, if I'm looking.

  6. Alexander ALBONWilliams

Engineer: Quite a big split, front tenths, left and right. OK, Ricardo, three. Copy that on the splits, we're having a look.

  7. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: OK, we'll just do a quick compare, I'll get back to you with some driving advice shortly. P14 at the moment. Leclerc is fast, it's 14.27, very similar to yours. Clear of traffic behind. We'll see your main balance limitation please when you can.

Esteban OCON: There's some very poor grip into turn 9 exit, turn 10 entry. Turn 3 is good, 7 as well. OK,

Engineer: copy that. There's a big tailwind 9 to 10 by all our measures, so I think that's mostly dominating. We'll see if we can advise anything with switches there.

  8. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: I'm struggling to stop the car into turn 1. Yeah, copy that.

  9. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: How's the tyre vibration from your end? Seems

    Max VERSTAPPEN: okay.

  10. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Oh, I lost the mirror. Unboxing.

  11. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Kevin MAGNUSSEN: We have to adjust the left wind mirror at some point, just a reminder.

    Engineer: Copy.

  12. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Main opportunity turn two and turn eight minimum speed

  13. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: Ok Daniel, so first sector is the main limitation, it's 4 tenths We are currently P17 13.4 and UT is P5 12.6 And it was a bit too much margin on 7.8, we lost 2 tenths So that was too much of a drop

  14. Yuki TSUNODARB

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  15. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: Are we going one more time?

Engineer: If you want, we can do one more.

    Yuki TSUNODA: Ok.

    Engineer: Engine 9, position 5. Engine 9, position 5.

  16. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Daniel RICCIARDO: Up in the box.

    Engineer: Negative, stay out, please.

  17. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: I hope that wasn't so much thought, I just ran over there.

  18. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Yeah, I just can't get around left-handers with this flat spot.

    Engineer: Yeah, understood. No worries.

  19. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: We've got a red flag, red flag. Delta positive. Obviously box, box, no overtaking. It's Hülkenberg, he's gone off turn one.

  20. Nico HULKENBERGHaas

    Nico HULKENBERG: Don't

    Engineer: know

    Nico HULKENBERG: what happened there.

Engineer: Yeah, I don't know either Nikko. Yeah, we're having a look just

Nico HULKENBERG: a rear rear completely looked up. Yep breaking

  21. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: Okay, you've got a clear track ahead so you can do what you want for your tyres.

  22. Valtteri BOTTASKick Sauber

Engineer: And currently P4 with just Max and Lando completing the softflap so far.

  23. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Sergio PEREZ: It was improved, better rotation I'll say, I think the anti-stability into 9-10 has been the disconnected balance, cannot get the apex,

    Engineer: can't

Sergio PEREZ: get the apex into 9.

Engineer: Okay so you're picking up that tailwind is really affecting balance, we can look at that. Any downsides from this setup change?

Sergio PEREZ: I wouldn't say so.

Engineer: Copy and will you learn more from a second lap? We have time, we have time.

Sergio PEREZ: Can we try it?

Engineer: I think we open it, so double cool, double cool, you've got Sunoda coming past, he's on outlap so he'll be coming faster than you, we're going double cool.

  24. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Just came down the floor after exit kerb, turn 13

Engineer: Affirm Yeah so we'll go straight on, we'll do a double cool If you're happy with that lap, we are happy to box Get on with the programme but Yeah that's fine If you need another one Yeah alright let's box and just check this floor please Yeah Affirm, we'll do that

  25. Carlos SAINZFerrari

Carlos SAINZ: Check the gearbox. There's something with

    Engineer: the

    Carlos SAINZ: gearbox.

    Engineer: Copy.

Carlos SAINZ: Stay in select gear.

  26. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: All right tire temps looking good to us we're happy to lean a bit on the right hand side tires

  27. Yuki TSUNODARB

Yuki TSUNODA: I picked up move on the stage, high speed 27, 28.

    Engineer: Yeah, very clear.

  28. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: How were the tires on the second lap?

Esteban OCON: They were still okay.

Engineer: Okay copy that. Yeah. Okay mate we've got a good read and a few things we can have a look at the time sheet when we're back in.

  29. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Just came down the floor after exit curb, turn 13

    Engineer: Affirm

  30. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: I'll just confirm we will run the C3 on heavy fuel, so the tyres are going to stay on the car, so happy for comments when you're ready.

  31. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Engineer: He's on high fuel, he's

Logan SARGEANT: on high fuel, he will pull away.

  32. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

    Engineer: Verstappen 16.1, Lando 15.8

  33. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Oscar, that looks quite a high level of Lyco. Maybe you don't need so much.

  34. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: So we're happy with that pace currently.

  35. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: So for info Verstappen on the medium tyre he started at 16.5 bring them in slowly he's now down at 15.8

  36. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Audio only, no transcript available for this message.

  37. Logan SARGEANTWilliams

Logan SARGEANT: I do a plus one. Good things are going to tag up today.

  38. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: So Lando 15.8, 15.6, 15.5, Russell first lap, on soft 15.3.

  39. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: A very weird slide exit of 7

  40. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: Just think about diff high speed for turn 7, it's fully open. It's

George RUSSELL: buried in the corner where it's sliding. Yeah, understood.

  41. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Norris best medium runner at the moment so 15.8 down to 15.2

  42. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Is the diff fully open in turn 13?

Engineer: I'll get back to you. Strat 8 and A Firm yes, diff fully open turn 13

  43. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Opportunity turn one, one tenth. Be careful with the amount of combined entry.

  44. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Engineer: Yeah, so now just one more lap on this Timex, one more lap.

  45. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Can turn 7 manage front left carcass temperature?

  46. Max VERSTAPPENRed Bull

Max VERSTAPPEN: Can we box? There's traffic.

Engineer: We can box, yes Max, box.

  47. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Has the wind picked up?

Engineer: No, we don't see anything on the wind.

  48. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: The rear feels like it's buckling in 7, 8

  49. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Pierre GASLY: Yeah, whatever happened, turn 9-10, we're straight in the club.

Engineer: Okay, we'll take a look. We think we have another step available on high speed.

  50. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: And careful with front micro locks phase three into turn one.

  51. Esteban OCONAlpine

Engineer: Ok mate, how's the balance?

Esteban OCON: It's starting to take off a little bit now

  52. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Marker for sliding rear.

Engineer: Judge, let me know if you think flap adjust will help.

    George RUSSELL: Negative.

    Engineer: Understood.

  53. Daniel RICCIARDORB

Engineer: Strat 10 when you can and let's be proactive with switches, consider push toggle turn 1 and where you need it for stability.

  54. Charles LECLERCFerrari

Engineer: Diff mid minus one and we would like to keep running until the end of the session if it's okay for you

  55. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Valska, check mic position and confirm flap adjust. I heard up one.

    Oscar PIASTRI: Copy, up one.

Engineer: OK, we're boxed this lap. Boxed this lap.

    Oscar PIASTRI: Copy, box.

  56. George RUSSELLMercedes

Engineer: Sonoda 3 seconds on a lap. Let

George RUSSELL: me just take a cool down lap and see if it resets things and...

  57. Sergio PEREZRed Bull

Engineer: Balance feedback when you can.

Sergio PEREZ: Very generally unstable 9 and 10.

  58. George RUSSELLMercedes

George RUSSELL: Third and the start's on the medium, if that's okay?

Engineer: Negative, we cannot use that tyre. So box, box, stop on your marks and switch off.

  59. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: Prepare for the next can we get SOC 13 for the next lap SOC 13 and we'll get back to you on slips

  60. Kevin MAGNUSSENHaas

Engineer: OK, Kev, we'd like to push hard the next three time-lapses just to see how the tyres go. OK, copy.

  61. Lando NORRISMcLaren

Engineer: And Leno's suggestion, the right-hand panel will help turn 10.

  62. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: And it'll be out lap critical, we may get one time but it's very close.

  63. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: And this will be the last lap, last lap.

  64. Oscar PIASTRIMcLaren

Engineer: Okay, that's the checkered flag. We need a full cooldown lap for the launch and keep the car speed up for full cooling.

  65. Pierre GASLYAlpine

Engineer: Okay Pierre, so no need for an aero cruise. If we could reset the cooker knob. We do need to sync first gear. If we could try to sync first gear before the start.

  66. Esteban OCONAlpine

Esteban OCON: Was the thief behaving normally into turn 1 or not?

Engineer: I think so, yeah, just looking at it, no concerns. We'll have a look through in the office though. I think there's a few things we can look at. He

Esteban OCON: thinks the car was turning in many times, you know, it was on and off turning.

Engineer: Okay, understood. We'll have a close look at that back in the office. It's difficult to advise on times around here as well, sorry, there's a bit of a mixed bag in terms of people saving and obviously with traffic, so... There's a consistent run until Norris came past obviously. So we can, yeah, look at it all in a bit more detail later. So three burnouts please, start on the right and then pushing to pit entry.

  67. Lewis HAMILTONMercedes

Engineer: Clutch was deep at 2% This time we're going to stop at the FAA bridge just away the car

    Lewis HAMILTON: Understood
