In fourteen races of 2026, an Alpine has failed to finish once. Pierre Gasly retired in Miami, and that is the whole list.
No other team comes close. Mercedes, the fastest car of the year, have three non-finishes; Aston Martin have fifteen. Franco Colapinto has taken the chequered flag in every race he has started. And at Monza,
Twenty-five Japanese Grands Prix have been held since 2000, all at Suzuka except two at Fuji. Pole won seventeen, Max Verstappen won four in a row from 2022, and Kimi Raikkonen won from seventeenth in 2005 with a last-lap pass. Every winner, grid slot and safety car, measured.

Gasly beat George Russell to pole at Monza by 0.060 seconds, with both Alpines in the top eight, and at the circuit where he won his only Grand Prix in 2020. It is the only pole of 2026 not taken by Mercedes or McLaren, although, as Alpine now use Mercedes power units, every pole of the year has been set on a Mercedes engine. Alpine switched to Mercedes power units for 2026, and the four Mercedes-powered teams show how much the rest of the car and the operation matter. On the same engine, Mercedes have failed to finish 3 of 28 entries, McLaren 6, Williams 8, and Alpine 1. Every team's record is in every 2026 F1 retirement.
Finishing is not the same as scoring, though. Almost half of Alpine's points, 32 of 68, came from Gasly's first seven races, when he scored in six of them. Colapinto's best spell was Miami and Canada, seventh then sixth.
At Barcelona, Alpine told its drivers to swap positions, and the engineer made it clear it was not a request:
EngineerOkay, Frank, this is an instruction. We need to switch cars into turn one. Please switch into turn one. Switch cars? Paper. Two into turn four, please. Turn four, switch the cars.

"This is an instruction. We need to switch cars." Colapinto finished tenth that day and Gasly seventh.
