Pierre Gasly's 2026 season, measured: a first pole at Monza, and a point lost in Mexico
Pierre Gasly took the first pole of his career at Monza in 2026, the first of the year not taken by Mercedes or McLaren. He has 42 points, tenth in the championship, and lost another in Mexico City to a yellow flag penalty. Every race, measured.
On 5 September 2026, Pierre Gasly put an Alpine on pole for the Italian Grand Prix, 0.060 seconds ahead of George Russell. It was the first pole of his Formula 1 career, at the circuit where he won his only Grand Prix in 2020.
It was also the first pole of 2026 not taken by a Mercedes or a McLaren; Max Verstappen has since taken two for Red Bull. The rest of Gasly's season has been quieter and more consistent than that Saturday suggests: 42 points, tenth in the championship, and two retirements in nineteen races, in Miami and Baku. He scored 32 of those points in the first seven rounds and 10 in the twelve since: tenth in Austin, after four races without a point, and a tenth place in Mexico City that the stewards took away.

The season in numbers
42 points, tenth in the championship, and 15 more than his team mate Franco Colapinto, who took him out of a points finish in Baku.

Mexico City, tenth on the road, 17th after a penalty: a stop and go, converted to time after the flag, and two penalty points for not slowing enough under double yellow flags.
Monza
Gasly has history at Monza. In 2020, driving for AlphaTauri, he won the Italian Grand Prix, still the only win of his career. Six years later he came back with an Alpine that had switched to Mercedes power units for the new regulations, and took pole. His reaction when the lap was confirmed:
"Been waiting for that one. Been waiting for that one."
A minute later, on his way back to the pits, he thanked the team: "Amazing. Thank you very much. Very well managed."

A reliable car, until Baku
After fourteen races Alpine had one non-finish across both cars, the best record on the grid, and that was Gasly's in Miami. Three followed in three races: both cars in Baku and Colapinto in Singapore. Over the season that is four cars unclassified in 34 entries. On the same Mercedes engine, Mercedes have had two unclassified, McLaren seven and Williams eight. For a driver in a midfield car, finishing is how points arrive: six of his nine points finishes came from starting outside the top eight. Every team's record is in every 2026 F1 retirement.
In Austria, where he finished thirteenth, the radio was about the heat rather than the car:
"And the water is like 45 degrees, yeah." His engineer's reply: "like 50."
Against Colapinto
In the fourteen races both Alpines finished, Gasly was ahead nine times and Colapinto five: in Canada, at Silverstone, at Spa, in Madrid and at Sepang. Colapinto finished the first fourteen races and matched Gasly's best result with sixth in Canada. The team's season, side by side, is in Alpine's 2026.
What is left
Gasly signed a contract in 2025 that keeps him at Alpine until the end of 2028. Four rounds remain this season: Sao Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Alpine are sixth in the constructors' championship on 69 points, 39 behind Racing Bulls and 38 ahead of Haas.
