Every Monaco Grand Prix winner since 2000, measured: 26 races, and nobody has won from further back than third
Twenty-six Monaco Grands Prix have been held since 2000, and no winner started lower than third. Pole won sixteen. Charles Leclerc became the first Monegasque winner since 1931, and Kimi Antonelli won from pole in 2026. Every winner, grid slot, safety car and red flag, measured.
Since 2000, twenty-six Monaco Grands Prix have been won from the first two rows of the grid. Nobody has won from further back than third.
That is the plainest measure of what Monaco is. The streets are too narrow to pass on, so the race is usually settled on Saturday afternoon: pole has won sixteen of the twenty-six. What happens on Sunday is mostly strategy, safety cars and walls. In 2024 Charles Leclerc finally won his home race, the first Monegasque winner since 1931, and in 2026 Kimi Antonelli won from pole.

Why the grid decides it
Overtaking on track at Monaco is so rare that the only reliable way past is in the pit lane, which is why the races that were not won from pole turned on strategy: Hamilton losing the 2015 lead by pitting under a late safety car, Red Bull not having Daniel Ricciardo's tyres ready in 2016, Ferrari's calls costing Leclerc in 2022.
In 2025 the FIA tried to force the issue with a rule making every driver use at least three sets of tyres, so two pit stops. It did not change the winner, Lando Norris from pole, and the rule was dropped for 2026.
2021 and 2024: Leclerc's home race
Leclerc took pole in 2021, but a driveshaft failure on the way to the grid meant he never started. He took pole again in 2022 and finished fourth after a strategy mix-up. In 2024 it finally worked: pole, a first-lap red flag, and a win from the front, the first by a Monegasque driver since Louis Chiron in 1931. His engineer:
"We won it! Finally! Yes!"
2026: Antonelli from pole
Antonelli won the 2026 race from pole, one of his eight wins of the season so far, in a race with two late safety cars and a red flag on lap 68. Esteban Ocon was promoted to ninth when Nico Hulkenberg was penalised for a collision with Carlos Sainz. Antonelli's season is measured in Kimi Antonelli's 2026, and Hulkenberg's penalty in Nico Hulkenberg's 2026.
