Every British Grand Prix winner since 2000, measured: Hamilton's nine, and why pole wins only a third of the time
Lewis Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix nine times, more than any driver has won any single Grand Prix. Yet since 2000 pole has won only nine of the twenty-seven races at Silverstone. Every winner, grid slot, safety car and red flag, measured, and the radio from the last three.

And yet Silverstone is not a circuit where pole decides the race. Of the twenty-seven British Grands Prix since 2000, only nine were won from pole, a third, against sixteen of twenty-six at Monaco. The weather changes its mind, strategy swings races, and the safety car has come out in all but one race since 2018. In 2026 Charles Leclerc won it for Ferrari, with Hamilton third in a Ferrari too.

Hamilton's nine
Hamilton's first British win, in 2008, came from fourth in the wet, by more than a minute. His seventh, in 2020, came on three wheels: his front left tyre failed on the final lap and he limped home ahead of Verstappen. In 2021 he collided with Verstappen at Copse on the first lap, took a ten-second penalty, and still won. And in 2024, from second on the grid, he won for the ninth time, his first win in almost three years. His engineer:

2025: Norris at home, Hulkenberg at last
Lando Norris won his home race in 2025, from third on the grid, after Oscar Piastri took a ten-second penalty for braking behind the safety car. Norris on the radio:
"Oh it's f***ing amazing, thank you well done everyone, thanks McLaren, this is a dream, winning at home". Behind them, Nico Hulkenberg finished third from nineteenth, the first podium of his career at his 239th Grand Prix. His engineer:
"I don't think I can comprehend what we've just done". Hulkenberg's 2026, with Audi, is measured in Nico Hulkenberg's 2026.
2026: Leclerc's first at Silverstone
Leclerc won the 2026 race from second on the grid, Ferrari's first British win since Carlos Sainz in 2022, with George Russell second and Hamilton third. Leclerc's season is measured in Charles Leclerc's 2026.
