Haas' 2026 season, measured: seventeen points in two races, then almost nothing

Oliver Bearman finished seventh in Melbourne and fifth in China, and added a sprint point in Shanghai. Since then the team has scored four points in twelve rounds, and none at all in the eight races since Monaco. Haas are seventh in the constructors' championship, ahead of Audi, Williams, Aston Martin and Cadillac. The fade Haas were the surprise of the opening weekends. Bearman started twelfth in Melbourne and finished seventh, then started tenth in Shanghai and finished fifth. Nothing since has come close. From Barcelona onward, neither car has finished higher than eleventh. The grid positions show where it went. Bearman started 11.0 on average in the first two rounds and 15.8 in the twelve since; Ocon 13.0 and 15.2. Bearman's fall is the steeper one, from the edge of the top ten to the back third of the grid, and it is his points that disappeared. The pattern is not unique to Haas: Williams have not scored since Monaco either. Haas use Ferrari power units, and on that engine the works team has failed to finish four times and Haas five, so reliability is not the main story here. On the radio Esteban Ocon's ninth at Monaco, the team's last points, came partly from someone else's penalty, and his engineer told him as soon as the race ended: "We're P9, actually, because Niko got a 10-second penalty."
