Lando Norris is fourth in the 2026 championship on 186 points, with wins in Hungary and at Zandvoort. His car cost him four weekends: a non-start in China, failures in Canada and Monaco, and a grid penalty at Spa. Every race, and what he said on the radio.
Lando Norris did not start the second race of his title defence. His McLaren's power unit electronics would not communicate, the car could not be made ready, and the pit lane closed with him still in the garage.

Twenty-five Japanese Grands Prix have been held since 2000, all at Suzuka except two at Fuji. Pole won seventeen, Max Verstappen won four in a row from 2022, and Kimi Raikkonen won from seventeenth in 2005 with a last-lap pass. Every winner, grid slot and safety car, measured.

His sprints: fourth in China, first in Miami, second in Canada, third at Silverstone, third at Zandvoort.
China, a non-start. Both McLarens failed to start with separate electrical problems on their power units. On Norris's car the team could not communicate with a component and could not replace it in time.
Canada, a gearbox. He started third on intermediate tyres and led into turn 1, but the tyre choice soon went wrong. On lap 40 his gearbox failed, and he said himself it "put us out of our misery". His radio as it went:
DriverSomething's broken about gearbox or something
He told the team something was broken with the gearbox.
Monaco, a power unit. He had reported power unit concerns from the start of the race, and on lap 44 of 78 it failed. "We're just not getting rewarded," he said.
Spa, a penalty for parts. He qualified third, but his car was on its fourth power electronics unit of the season, one more than the three allowed. The first had failed terminally in China and the second needed repairs after practice in Japan. McLaren took the ten-place penalty at Spa because it is a circuit you can overtake at, and he recovered from thirteenth to seventh.
When the car held together, it was quick. He took pole in Hungary and won, and his radio afterwards sounded like relief:
"The car was unbelievable today... Nice to finally be able to do it all for you again. Feels like it's been a while."
Four weeks later he did it again from pole at Zandvoort, at the last Dutch Grand Prix, and this time the message was about the championship:

He was on pole for the first Grand Prix at the Madring. Kimi Antonelli, starting second, took the lead by pitting under a virtual safety car, and Norris finished third behind Max Verstappen. Antonelli said on the radio afterwards that he felt "a bit bad for Lando". That race is covered in Kimi Antonelli's 2026 season.
In Barcelona, his engineer told him McLaren had complained about Antonelli's track limits:
Engineerand it's quite clear that Anceli has been off track more than three times we've reported it to the FIA we expect he should get at least a five second penalty
"It's quite clear that [Antonelli] has been off track more than three times. We've reported it to the FIA. We expect he should get at least a five second penalty." Complaints like that turn into stewards' documents: the decision, the reasoning, and whether a penalty was applied. Antonelli retired four laps from the end, so no penalty for it ever changed a result.
Nine rounds remain, starting with Baku on 26 September. Norris is five points behind Hamilton for third and 25 behind George Russell for second, with 233 points still available. His car used a fourth power electronics unit, one more than the three allowed for the season, so he took a ten-place grid penalty and started thirteenth after qualifying third.
Fourth, on 186 points after the Spanish Grand Prix, five behind Lewis Hamilton and 25 behind George Russell.
"We've reported it to the FIA" is where a race result can change after the flag, and almost nobody sees what happens next.
