Lewis Hamilton's 2026 season, measured: the first Ferrari win, a first pole, and points in 18 of 19 races
Lewis Hamilton won for Ferrari in Barcelona, took his first pole of 2026 in Mexico City, and has scored in every race but one. Every race, and what he said on the radio.
On 14 June in Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton won a Grand Prix in a Ferrari. It was the 106th win of his career and his first in 686 days.
He did it with an aggressive undercut and a well-timed stop under the virtual safety car, and held on while Kimi Antonelli, running second, stopped with four laps to go. George Russell finished second and Lando Norris third: the first all-British podium in Formula 1 since the 1968 United States Grand Prix.
Nineteen rounds into 2026, Hamilton is third in the championship on 259 points, two behind Max Verstappen for second. He has scored in every race but one, the Madrid race his brakes failed in, and in Mexico City he took his first pole of the year. His sprints: third in China, seventh in Miami, sixth in Canada, second at Silverstone after starting the sprint from pole, and seventh at Zandvoort, and second in Singapore.
Barcelona
The win came from second on the grid, and from strategy as much as speed. Ferrari took the undercut, made a well-timed stop under the virtual safety car, and then asked him for seven all-out laps on his tyres. His engineer told him plainly what was at stake:
"This is our race. Give everything these seven laps. It's the critical moment."
The message after the flag is the one people will remember. He thanked the team in Italian and English, then the factory, then his family, and then the fans, "for continuing to remind me who I am".
A minute later, on the next message:
"Let's go! For the Ferrari! For the Ferrari! Guys, thank you for those great pit stops as well."
Hamilton finished second in Monaco, and his radio afterwards explains more about him than the result does. He apologised to the team for not winning, twice, and then thanked them anyway:

Madrid: the streak ends in five words
Thirteen races of points ended a few laps into the first Grand Prix at the Madring:
"I don't have brakes, guys." He retired with a brake failure. Kimi Antonelli won the race.
Sepang: slicks on a wet track
The Bahrain Grand Prix, held at Sepang this year, started on a wet track. Ferrari sent Hamilton out from second on soft slicks while the leaders around him ran intermediates, and by lap four he was seventeenth. When his engineer offered him a way back, he refused it.

Mexico City: pole, and a row with his team mate
In Austin he finished fourth, 1.030 seconds off the podium after chasing Verstappen on fresher tyres (US GP 2026 race report). A week later in Mexico City he took his first pole of 2026, 0.009 seconds quicker than Russell.

The race went wrong at turn 4 on the first lap. Charles Leclerc went around the outside, both Ferraris ran off the track, Leclerc came back with the lead and Verstappen passed Hamilton on the exit. Leclerc was given five seconds, and Hamilton did not think that was enough.

The most polite man on the grid
Up to the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, Hamilton was the second most heard driver on Formula 1's radio this season, with 77 broadcast messages from Canada onward, behind only Antonelli on 85. What makes his count different is what is in it.
When we counted every broadcast line of 2026, Hamilton appeared near the top of both the apologies and the thanks. He said sorry on air four times, second only to Oliver Bearman, and thanked his team six times, second only to Arvid Lindblad. The full count is in what F1 drivers actually say on the radio.
For a driver with seven world titles and 106 wins, that is not a small thing to notice.

Four rounds remain: Sao Paulo, where he won from tenth on the grid in 2021, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Kimi Antonelli won the title in Mexico City, so Hamilton's fight is for second: he is two points behind Verstappen and nine ahead of Russell.
