Charles Leclerc's 2026 season, measured: a first Silverstone win, and three races that ended off the track
Charles Leclerc won the British Grand Prix for his ninth career victory and is fifth in the 2026 championship on 167 points. Three races ended off the track: no brakes at Monaco, a hydraulic failure in Barcelona, and a heavy crash at Monza. Every race, and what he said on the radio.
On the restart after a late safety car at Monaco, running third at his home race, Charles Leclerc went straight on at the final corner and into the barrier. His radio said why before anyone else did: "Please fing brake!"*
He said afterwards that three of his four brakes had not worked after the restart. It was the first of three races in 2026 that ended with his Ferrari off the track. Four weeks later he won at Silverstone for the first time, his ninth career win. Fourteen rounds in, he is fifth in the championship on 167 points.

Silverstone
Leclerc started second, beside Kimi Antonelli on pole, and made a flying start into the lead, with Lewis Hamilton following him through to make it a Ferrari one and two into the first corner. He led until his pit stop. Antonelli's race then came apart with a broken wheel shield, and when Max Verstappen went off at Stowe on lap 48, both Ferraris pitted under the safety car. The race finished behind it. George Russell, who stayed out, was second and Hamilton third.
Three races off the track
Monaco, the brakes. Running third at home, where he won in 2024 (every Monaco Grand Prix since 2000), he went straight on at the final corner after the safety car restart. His radio as it happened:

"Please f***ing brake!" Ferrari changed his brake configuration to match Hamilton's for the next race.
Barcelona, the hydraulics. He had crashed in Q3 and started tenth, gained three places on the opening lap, and then, with a handful of laps left, his Ferrari went into the gravel at turn 2. He reported no brakes, no power steering and no gearshifts, and crawled back to the pits to retire.
Monza, the barrier. On lap 2, fighting Oscar Piastri, he lost the rear of the car on throttle out of the Parabolica, put two wheels on the green-painted area on the outside, caught the slide, and was then fired across into the tyre wall. The race was red-flagged. He said the car had felt "a little bit weird" on throttle through the same corner a lap earlier.
On the radio
Leclerc has 38 broadcast messages this season from Canada onward, and they are some of the most direct on the grid. In Canada, early in a race of changing conditions, he wanted to know what Ferrari were doing:
"Can you at least tell me what the plan is? Like, what are we trying to do?" The answer: "We're trying to wait for rain, mate." He finished fourth from eighth on the grid.
In Madrid he asked the same kind of question, and got a straight answer:
