Every Belgian Grand Prix winner since 2000, measured: Spa's comebacks, disqualifications and a race with no racing
Twenty-five Belgian Grands Prix have been held at Spa-Francorchamps since 2000. Pole won twelve. Max Verstappen won from fourteenth in 2022, George Russell lost a win to the scales in 2024, and in 2021 the race ran entirely behind the safety car. Every winner, grid slot and safety car, measured.
In 2022, Max Verstappen started the Belgian Grand Prix fourteenth after an engine penalty. He won by almost eighteen seconds.
Spa-Francorchamps has seen its share of comebacks. Of the twenty-five Belgian Grands Prix since 2000, twelve were won from pole, and Kimi Raikkonen won from tenth in 2004. Lewis Hamilton won five times. The race has also produced some of the strangest results of the era: in 2021 it rained so hard that the cars never raced at all, and in 2024 the man who crossed the line first, George Russell, was disqualified hours later.

2021: the race that was not
The 2021 race started more than three hours late in heavy rain, ran three laps behind the safety car and was stopped. Half points were awarded, with Verstappen first, George Russell second for Williams and Hamilton third, and the rules on shortened races were rewritten afterwards. Before the first stoppage, drivers disagreed about the conditions. Verstappen:
"I mean, it's wet, but for me, it's fine to race." Russell, a few minutes later:
"Absolutely nothing into turn 5."
2022 and 2023: Verstappen from the back
In 2022 Verstappen took an engine penalty, started fourteenth and won by almost eighteen seconds. In 2023 he took a gearbox penalty, started sixth, and won again. Radio from 2022 is not in our archive, which has no recordings from that season.
2024: first on the road, disqualified
George Russell made a one-stop strategy work and crossed the line first in 2024, just ahead of Hamilton. On the radio:
"Amazing strategy! You guys are the best! Come on!" Hours later his car was found to be 1.5 kg under the minimum weight after the race, and he was disqualified. Hamilton inherited the win. Russell's 2026 is measured in George Russell's 2026.
2026: Antonelli from pole
Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 race from pole, with Charles Leclerc second and Verstappen third. His season is measured in Kimi Antonelli's 2026.
