Every Italian Grand Prix winner since 2000, measured: Monza belongs to the front row, except when it does not
Twenty-seven Italian Grands Prix have been held at Monza since 2000, and pole won sixteen. The exceptions are some of the strangest wins of the era: Gasly from tenth in 2020, and Kimi Antonelli from nineteenth at his home race in 2026. Every winner, grid slot, safety car and red flag, measured.
In 2026, Kimi Antonelli started the Italian Grand Prix nineteenth, after Mercedes went past its power unit allowance, and won. No Monza winner since 2000 had started further back.
Monza is usually more orderly than that. Of the twenty-seven Italian Grands Prix since 2000, sixteen were won from pole, including six in a row from 2010 to 2015. Lewis Hamilton won it five times. But the Temple of Speed has also produced some of the least likely winners of the era: Sebastian Vettel for Toro Rosso in 2008, Pierre Gasly from tenth in 2020, and Antonelli in 2026.
Most wins since 2000: Hamilton 5 (2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018), then Michael Schumacher, Barrichello, Vettel and Verstappen with 3 each.
Lowest winning grid slots: 19th, Antonelli 2026, 10th, Gasly 2020, and 7th, Verstappen 2022. Antonelli and Verstappen started there after engine penalties.
Red flags: 2020 and 2026.

The unlikely winners
2008: Vettel. In the rain, Sebastian Vettel put a Toro Rosso on pole and won, at the time the youngest winner in Formula 1 history, for a team that had never won.
2020: Gasly from tenth. A red flag after Charles Leclerc's crash reshuffled the order, Lewis Hamilton had a penalty for entering a closed pit lane, and Pierre Gasly held off Carlos Sainz for AlphaTauri's first win. In 2026, back at Monza, Gasly took the first pole of his career; his season is measured in Pierre Gasly's 2026.
2021: McLaren one-two. Daniel Ricciardo led Lando Norris home after Verstappen and Hamilton collided and both retired.
2026: Antonelli from nineteenth. Starting nineteenth, Antonelli came through a red flag on lap 3, caught Russell at seven tenths a lap and passed him on lap 50. At the flag:

Why Monza usually goes to pole
Monza is the fastest circuit on the calendar: long straights broken by a few heavy braking zones and chicanes. Pole has won sixteen of the twenty-seven races since 2000, a higher rate than Silverstone's nine of twenty-seven.
