Formula 1 has a language of its own, and it is one of the real barriers to getting into the sport. Commentators fire off "he's in the dirty air", "they've gone for the undercut", "that's a breach of parc fermé", and unless someone explains it, it can feel like the race is happening behind a wall of jargon. The good news is that almost none of it is complicated once it is spelled out plainly. Most F1 terms are just shorthand for a simple idea.
This page is the key. Below is every term you actually need, each explained in a sentence or two, and grouped into five areas so it is easy to find what you are after. Where a term is worth a deeper look, there is a link to a full guide. You do not need to read it top to bottom, treat it as a map, and come back to it whenever a word trips you up.
